In 1959 he began his studies at the acting faculty of the Vilnius Conservatory, but studied only three courses and moved to the directing faculty of the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography. The first experiments in theatrical directing began in his student years with the production of the play “Night conversation with the man you despise.”
The debut work of the talented director on the big stage was the play "Traditional Collection", staged in the Riga Theatre of Russian Drama. Later he became the artistic director of the Krasnoyarsk Youth Theatre, becoming famous for such bright works as Fahrenheit 451, Theft and Hamlet.
