Born in Moscow in the family of famous artists of the Bolshoi Theatre - singer Tamara Sorokina and dancer Shamil Yagudin. In 1985 he graduated with honors from the piano department (class of Lev Naumov), in the 89th, also with honors, the department of opera and symphonic conducting (class of Yuri Simonov) of the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory.
In 1983 he was admitted to the Bolshoi Theatre as a concertmaster of ballet. From 1987 to 89 he trained, improving his conducting skills, at the Paris Conservatory in the class of Professor J. S. Berrot. In the summer of 1989 he participated in the Tanglewood Festival, held by the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). He trained at BSO under Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein. Upon completion of the internship (he received an excellent certification and the opportunity to give a concert in a prestigious American concert hall), he entered the Bolshoi Theater in competition.
During his work in the theater he staged the opera “Iolanta” by P. Tchaikovsky (1997), ballets “Petrushka” by I. Stravinsky (1991), “Korsar” by A. Adana (1992, 1994), “The Prodigal Son” by S. Prokofiev (1992), “Sylphide” by H. Levenschel (1994), “Swan Lake” by P. Tchaikovsky (restored version of the first production by Y. Grigorovich, 2001), “Selfiev” by A. (03), “Selfikov” by A. Bolda (A.) ” by A.
In 1996, he was an assistant to Mstislav Rostropovich, when he staged M. Mussorgsky’s opera Khovanshchina in the Bolshoi Theatre, edited by D. Shostakovich. Maestro Rostropovich gave this performance to Pavel Sorokin after he stopped conducting them himself.

In 2000-02 Pavel Sorokin was the chief conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of Radio and Television. Since 2003 he has been Principal Conductor of the Russian Symphony Orchestra.
