Born on October 2, 1951 in Petrozavodsk. In 1973 he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Technology of Kharkiv University, worked as a nuclear physicist at the Institute of High Energy Physics in Protvino, Moscow Region, where he created the amateur theater Green Goose (1973-1979). In parallel, he studied at the director's faculty of the B.V. Shchukin Theater School. He entered (but did not study) LGITMIK on the course of G.A. Tovstonogov. In 1982 he graduated from the directorial department of the acting faculty of the Moscow Art Theatre School-Studio (O.N. Efremov course). He became known after the production of Emigrants S. Mrozek, according to the author, the best stage interpretation of his play.
In 1983-1986 the actor MHAT. Among the roles: Khlestakov (Inspector N. Gogol), Hetman (Days of Turbin M. Bulgakov), Bread (Blue Bird M. Meterlinka). In 1983-1989, the director of the Moscow Art Theatre (Bench of A. Gelman, together with Efremov, 1984).
One of the organizers of the Creative Workshops STD. In 1988-1992 he directed the “Workshop of M. Mokeyev”, which in 1992 was reorganized into the “Theater of Mikhail Mokeyev Ulysses” (On the Crime based on the novel by F. Dostoevsky Crime and Punishment, 1990; Les A. Ostrovsky, 1990; Nemoy waiter H. Pinter, 1992; The Axe Festival, Mokeyev’s stage composition based on stories and Diaries of the writer Dostoevsky, 1994, etc.).

In 1983-1988 he taught at the Moscow Art Theatre School, in 1988-1990 at GITIS, in 1990-1991 at the Higher Directorial Courses, in 1995-1997 at the Shchukin Theatre School. Since 1991 he has been leading a master class in Austria, Great Britain (including the Royal Shakespeare Company), France, USA, Germany. He runs a summer acting school in Ireland.
