Within Temptation, a Dutch rock band, was formed in 1996 in Utrecht. The founders are guitarist Robert Westerholt and vocalist Sharon den Adel. Later, they are joined by bassist Jeurn van Wen, guitarist Michiel Papenhove, keyboardist Martyne Westerholt and drummer Dennis Leflang, who is replaced by Ivar de Graf in the future. In 1997, the band released their debut album Enter, and then went on a concert tour, visiting with concerts in Austria and Germany. At the same time, Shiro Palma takes the place behind the percussion system. The compositions of the debut album are close to the genres of gothic metal and doom metal and are characterized by slow rhythm and heavy riffs. The following year, the band headlined the Dynamo festival and released a mini-album, The Dance.
In early December 2000, the second studio album Mother Earth was released. The single "Ice Queen" reaches number two on the national chart, and the disc itself reaches number three. After the next change of composition, the musicians conduct a concert tour of the cities of Mexico and France. By 2002, Within Temptation achieved platinum status in Germany.
The third studio album, The Silent Force, was released in November 2004. The disc debuts on the first place of the Netherlands chart. The single "Stand My Ground" became a real hit of the group. A similar success is received by the composition “Memories”. The Heart of Everything was released in the summer of 2007 in both the Netherlands and the United States. In 2008, the concert DVD Black Symphony was released. It included a performance in Rotterdam with a symphony orchestra. Next year, the acoustic album “An Acoustic Night at the Theatre” will be released.
