R.E.M., an American alternative rock band, was formed in Atens, Georgia in 1980. The founders are vocalist Michael Stipe, bassist Mike Mills, guitarist Peter Buck and drummer Bill Berry (left the band in 1997). The band had a major impact on the development of alternative rock.
Stipe’s unusual vocals and technical play by guitarist Buck attract the attention of music connoisseurs. Therefore, in 1981 on the indie label “Hib-Tone” musicians released the single “Radio Free Europe”, which becomes their debut music release. Two years later, the full-length studio work Murmur is released. The album receives flattering reviews of musical publications. After that, R.E.M. began to tour actively, continuing to work on studio albums.
The 1987 single "The One I Love" allows the band to move from the underground to the mainstream. The following year, the famous label “Warner Bros.” published the album “Green”. The range of themes of the band’s songs is expanding, as well as the geography of concert performances. During this period, a unique style of R.E.M. was formed, which is a combination of indie rock, post-punk and folk.
The early 1990s brought the group commercial success. The albums are "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People". In the latter, the musical style of R.E.M. changes, but everything returns to normal in the next album called Monster. In 1996, the team signed a second contract with Warner Bros., which at the time was rated as the most expensive in history. In 1999, the album "Up" was released.
In the early 2000s, they recorded the albums Reveal and Around the Sun. In 2007, the band released the live concert album. Two songs included in it, "Everybody Hurts", as well as the composition "Losing My Religion", attract the attention of listeners (later becoming the hallmark of the band), although they do not achieve serious success in the British chart, occupying places outside the top hundred. /
