An American hard rock band formed in 1969 and became famous in 1970 when it was referred to as "the loudest in the world." Between 1969 and 1972, five of GFR's albums went platinum (the other three went gold); the band's total album circulation in the 70s was more than 25 million. Grand Funk Railroad performed a very simplistic, but deafeningly loud version of blues rock; later music critics began to mention them among the heralds of stoner rock.
In the 90s, the ensemble (in a changing lineup) performed under the name The American Band (in honor of the hit "We're an American Band"). In 2000, its founders Don Brewer and Mel Shacher assembled a new lineup (with members 38 Special and Kiss) and have since toured regularly as Grand Funk Railroad. Frontman Mick Farner also performs and records with his own band, NRG.
