Founded in June 1972 by a young, but already known in narrow circles guitarist Boris Grebenshchikov, the group "Aquarium" is one of the legends of Russian rock. Since its foundation and to this day, Grebenshchikov with various compositions has released more than 70 albums. In their work, the group uses a huge variety of musical styles and directions, its own specific sound cannot be confused with any other.
The name of the group comes from the name of the cafe on Budapest Street, and was coined by Anatoly Gunitsky (George), with whom Boris Grebenshchikov released his first album The Temptation of the Holy Aquarium (1973). The following year, keyboardist Andrei Romanov (Dyusha) and bassist Mikhail Vasiliev (Fan) joined them. In the mid-70s, the group was feverish, the composition was constantly changing, two more albums were released - From the Other Side of Mirror Glass (1974), All Brothers - Sisters (1976).
At the same time, the Aquarium takes part in the Tallinn Rock Festival. Here BG meets Andrei Makarevich, which eventually resulted in a long friendship and several joint concerts. Released in 1978, "Blue Album" became the first in the Soviet space, recorded at a new, higher quality level.
After participating in the scandalous All-Union festival of vocal and instrumental ensembles and rock groups "Spring Rhythms", which took place in Tbilisi in 1980, Boris Grebenshchikov was excluded from the ranks of the Komsomol and the band's performances were banned. However, the band never stops performing, and in 1983 released perhaps their best album, Radio Africa. In the late 80s in the United States with a circulation of 10,000 copies, a double album "Red Wave" was released, which included the songs of Soviet rock groups: "Aquarium", "Cinema", "Alice", "Strange Games". Soon in the Soviet Union, the record company Melodiya released a giant disc called White Album, which included compositions from the albums Children of December and Days of Silver.
In the 90s, a new history of the Aquarium began. The band released albums "Favorite songs of Ramses IV" (1993), "Sands of St. Petersburg" (1994), "Hyperborea" (1997), "Sister Chaos" (2002), etc.
