The legend of the world ballet scene, Yuri Grigorovich, was born in Leningrad in 1927. Grigorovich followed in the footsteps of his mother’s family (formerly a ballerina) and her brother, the famous dancer of the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre Georgy Rozai.

From the age of 8, young Grigorovich studied at the Leningrad Choreographic School (today it is the State Academy of Choreographic Art named after A.Ya.Vaganova), where he studied under the guidance of talented teachers Alexei Pisarev and Boris Shavrov. After graduating from the school, Grigorovich was accepted into the troupe of the Kirov State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater (today the Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater) and became a leading soloist. Yuri Nikolaevich worked in the theater for about eighteen years.
