William Dixon was born on August 3, 1860 in France, in a family of immigrants from England. Mother: Elizabeth Kennedy Lowry (1823-1879). Father: James White Dixon is an artist, astronomer and linguist.
After the death of his father, the Dixon family decided to move to the UK.
Dixon was fond of science and mechanics and hoped to work in the laboratory of the famous American inventor Thomas Edison. When the family moved to the United States, William Dixon got the desired job in the company of Edison.
He developed a phonograph, but was also interested in “moving pictures”. Some of his ideas were implemented, for example, the 35 mm standard for film, the composition of the emulsion for film, etc.
He died on 28 September 1935 in the UK at the age of 75.
