Shin Ha Gyun first trained as a theater actor at the Seoul Institute of Arts before starting acting under Jang Jin. When Jang Jin directed his first film, The Happenings, in 1998, Shin was cast in almost all of Jang’s feature films. Impressed by his abilities, Kim Ji Un also cast him in supporting roles in The Foul King and the 30-minute online film Coming Out.
Ha Gyun became a superstar in late 2000, after playing a young North Korean soldier in Park Chang Wook's film Joint Security Zone. He has a huge number of fans. After that, he co-starred with Won Bin in the film “The Talking Killers”, which also became a commercial hit.
Over the next two years, Shin played two strong roles that defined his career. In 2002, in the film "Sympathy for Mr. Revenge" (the first film in the trilogy of revenge), he played a deaf man with bright green hair, who out of despair kidnaps a young girl. And in 2003, he played in the movie “Save the Green Planet!” a crazy man who believes that he uncovered an alien conspiracy aimed at destroying life on Earth. These two wonderful roles reveal the diversity of Shin Ha Gyun’s talent.
Also noteworthy are his roles in two films of a completely different plan. "Welcome to Dongmakgol" - set in a small mountain village and "Front Line" - a story about soldiers fighting for a small hill. The film shows the absurdity and cruelty of war.
Shin Ha Gyun is a universal actor. He played the following roles: an autistic in My Brother, a rural postman in Letter from Mars, a suspect in Crime Scene, an eccentric hitman in Without Compassion for the Brute, an artist who makes an unwise bet in Devil's Game, a morbidly horned husband in Thirst, a courageous policeman in Festival, and a music teacher in Café Noir.
Primarily a film actor, Sin still starred in 2003 in the drama Good Person on MBC. But in 2010 he returned to TV in the comedy series Golden Villa, which aired on the cable channel tvN. In 2011, Ha Gyun starred in the medical drama Brain, playing a cold, ambitious neurosurgeon. This drama took him to new heights of popularity, and the Grand Prize ("Daesang") from KBS.
In 2013, he starred in the romantic comedy series All About My Romance and in the same year, in the title role, in the movie The Fugitive - about an ordinary man forced to become a fugitive after he was accused of murder.
Shin Ha-kyun dated actress Kim Go-un. The couple announced their relationship in the summer of 2016. The actors had a passion for diving. They attracted attention because of the big age difference, but after eight months of the relationship broke up. On March 22, 2017, the Actors Agency confirmed the news: Kim Guo-un and Shin Ha-kyun broke up at the end of February. The couple became separated from each other due to busy work schedules. They will remain good colleagues.”
