18+ Destroying hope. Nature once again showed man his strength, so that he did not think much about himself. But I think that today, 20 years later, we forget about it again ... then soon there will be a reminder again.
I remember that event. I remember that the scale of what was happening did not immediately become clear, the number of victims grew until it became phenomenal simple (it is strange even that everyone remembers the terrorist attacks of September 11, and few people know and remember about this tsunami, but after all, a hundred times more people suffered and died from its consequences - and the thing is that the terrorist attacks were watched live and covered properly by the American media). The thing is that the places were deaf, the connection was bad, and the Internet was still not so developed. Today we almost receive real-time information from almost any corner of the world, including super-fresh photos and videos. It was different then. Accordingly, the aid also did not go quickly, precisely because the places were deaf, even coastal, the communication is poor, the scale of the tsunami consequences became clear not immediately. Maybe it just didn’t immediately become clear who at all and where they need help.
The disadvantage of our cinema is the minimal display of the tsunami itself (although this logically comes from the name of the original - Tsunami: Consequences). But even the consequences are somehow sluggishly shown. Plus, the stories of the main characters are a little blurred, the spiritual connection between them and the viewer has not been created to the proper extent, did not have time to mature. The effect of empathy is minimal, although anchorly mainly used the father-daughter bundle (the father is looking for a daughter) to enhance the tragedy, soulfulness.
But cinema says a lot about victims. It shows them. Why so much? As they write on the Internet, the main reason is the lack of both a warning system and reliable tsunami detection (the waves themselves in the ocean are almost invisible, and their height is growing very quickly already near the shore). Of course, after the tragedy, everything will be created in some form... after the fact, as we like. Plus, a large number of victims is due to the fact that people historically like to settle by the water: fish to trade, come on vacation, live simply. A large number of foreigners (and not only locals) had to specifically our tragedy also because the pre-Christmas season fell, when people from the Golden Billion like to fly to rest in the south. Accordingly, as I read, the strength of the wave due to a mega-strong earthquake was such that the water could pass from 2 to 4 km of coast. This is very much, this is just the whole territory that tourists and hotels like to occupy, and they are usually located in the lowest parts of the coast, which the waves are easiest to wash away.
It's also a Western movie. The West is mainly interested in Westerners. We look at the tragedy of foreigners and foreign eyes (the tragedy of all others is more like a background), although the locals died 20 times more. Plus, there are also foreign journalists in the plot who fall into sensationalism and conspiracy theories. Why are they here?
