caprica A very strange thing is public opinion. One project may seem ingenious to some, and for others it may seem outright fake. In this regard, it is extremely rare to find projects that are supported by the overwhelming majority and this project was a rather successful series “Star Cruiser Galaxy”, which I preferred to bypass, because I am not quite favorable to long-running series. Much more attractive to me was this series, which was created by Remi Obushon and Ronald D. Moore on the principle of Prometheus by Ridley Scott. When this series seems to become a prequel to the aforementioned series, but as it developed as a separate product. Which really impressed me. But not many viewers who willingly criticized this series. I haven’t seen the Star Cruiser Galaxy, so there’s nothing to compare it to. But I really liked this series.
Almost all series are shot according to their strict formula and pattern, move away from which, the project may turn out weak. The attraction of this series for me is that even being shot by an exemplary series, it gives off very much cinematic content. In some places, the dynamics, the level of editing that takes place on the screen and the production itself creates the feeling that you are watching an ordinary feature film. Especially in the last few minutes of the season. When we see such high-quality cutting frames, it’s like watching a multi-budget Hollywood blockbuster.
The disadvantage of the series can be attributed perhaps a small number of action scenes. Although in my opinion, the creators of the series adequately beat this flaw and adequately filled the empty space of the series. Thus, although it rests to a greater extent on numerous blah blah blah blah, but it looks quite tight. Largely due to its very dense content side. Where the series literally squeezes out the tension, dynamics and a kind of action-packed mood, which is just perfect for science fiction thrillers. In total, I watched the season with great pleasure and at its end, I also wanted it to be an indicator of quality for me. Although all the visuals combined with the design of the Cylons after Hollywood projects begins to seem a little rough.
Each story has its beginning, and often, it can turn the concepts of events already known to us on its head. The merit of such a move has already seen many filmmakers and willingly use in the construction of certain projects. Where the ideal subject for comparison can be considered “Prometheus” by Ridley Scott. Both projects are both prequels of existing projects and independent creations as well. Unless, if Scott’s film focused on the origin of the Xenomorphs, then the plot revolves around the origin of the Cylons. The only good thing is that the story doesn’t revolve entirely around the Cylons. Quite the opposite. The plot develops as a drama of two families, each of whom lost members of their family in a terrible terrorist attack. Thus, the plot itself pays more attention to the inner experiences of the main characters, how they try to adapt to the prevailing circumstances and continue to live on.
Nevertheless, one of the main advantages of the plot can be considered the multi-layered development of the story on the screen. After all, in parallel with the family drama of each of the families, the plot develops on behalf of the avatar of the deceased main character and in parallel with all this, the story of the creation of the Cylons develops. The beauty of the project is that even the viewer who has not watched the series “Star Cruiser Galaxy” can easily understand what is happening on the screen, and those who have watched, rather fill in the gaps and get an abundance of answers to his questions. Especially as to why the Cylons began to destroy their creators. It is due to this, despite the strict framework of the series around one season, a feeling of a certain understatement is created. There is a point in the series, but it seems that the series had more to grow. Especially at the expense of morality.
The series raises a very important topic. What is the soul and what makes man human? His flesh, organic innards and much more, or a soul that contains all the likes, dislikes, memories, and much more? All this is well developed by the example of one phrase from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. When asked why the gods created us, one of the heroines replies, “Because they could.” It is worth recognizing that technology is developing very quickly and progress is intensifying. So how soon will the time come when people will think of themselves as Gods and create their own lives? Is it right to equate yourself with the gods?
Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Alessandra Thorezon, Paula Malcomson, Sasha Royce, Polly Walker and many others played just great. Some actors, of course, sometimes did not finish, and Paula seemed too unattractive. However, I do believe in the realism of their characters. Especially Polly Walker, which so strongly merged into the image of an obsessed fanatic that they wanted to nail her with their own hands more than once.
The music of the composer of the series Beara McCreary I liked damn much. Especially due to the fact that the maximum slope here is more on overtures than on spectacular tracks. And then, the combination of classical orchestral overtures with elements of rock music and a synthesizer cannot but impress. Especially its periodic similarity with another work Beara for the series "Terminator: The Chronicles of Sarah Connor". And just words do not describe all the charms of this work. You just have to listen to it yourself.
8 out of 10
Quite sharp, dynamic, intriguing and very cinematic sci-fi series. Of course, it was not without a couple of shortcomings and places the series sags. I really liked it and would recommend it to you.
