The film is based on another 1975 film of the same name, which is said on the Internet: 'The film "Grey Gardens" tells about the life of Edith Bouvier Biel - Jackie Kennedy's cousin - in her youth belonged to the New York secular society, an actress and model, in old age - a reclusive woman living together with her mother in the dilapidated Grey Gardens mansion'
Sad movie. Our heroines were related to the famous first lady of the deceased after the shot in Dallas of the President of the United States. They were once part of another world, secular, rich, but then everything dried up and disappeared. They began to live almost like beggars, but in a big house. Our film seems to jump from the future to the past, telling the whole story of two ladies in snatches.
That happens to us a lot. At some point, life changes imperceptibly, but we still live in the past and do not want to adapt to new circumstances, new time, new life... and so even more painful. At some point, we even kind of go crazy, lose our minds. It's scary, especially if you don't have friends around.
Imagine a person who used to live under socialism, and then suddenly capitalism grew around... and you can’t rebuild, change. You continue to live with the same concepts and values, but people around you are different, they treat everything differently, even political communists are different. Something in you, of course, changes, some part of your life is forced to change – otherwise you will not survive, but another part of it remains unchanged, only overgrown with dust, mold, breaks down, decays, does not renew.
Funny story. Something instructive. Something scary. It's kind of fun. It's ironic that in the end, the two women got their way -- they became popular, because we see a story about them. They waited patiently, very patiently. . .
I may be nagging, but how is it possible for a person to eat, bathe, etc. in such ruins? I have not yet watched all the series, and I am not sure that I will watch, but the implausibility of the appearance of the heroines against the background of the house strains. This is the episode where Jackie came in. Mom and daughter ate something, where did the food come from? They sit in clean clothes, painted. But that's impossible. Or I didn't notice something. . But how to be in a clean ironed whole silk robe in a landfill. Namely, the dump is this house. And Edie's wearing a mink coat. Which has survived all these years. It's a little stressful. And how they have not been nailed and robbed in all these years. .
Amazed by the ease of Edie in his youth in the 30s, she is either stronger than all others, or there are not enough screws. I haven't decided.
Meaning of the movie. . Hell knows. This is a reason to clean the apartment, I guess. Everything else. . You will have to release your daughter in time, yes.
Loneliness? So get out of the Grey Gardens and help someone. And here the breeding of cats - this is also not kindness, so it is impossible with living creatures, uncontrollably reproduce and keep in such conditions.
I haven’t seen a tragedy yet. You can't all be stars, someone needs to bake bread and heal. They gave you the part, they didn't let you sing on stage or not, the toilet needs to be washed.
The film tells a sad story about how you can lose everything and not always through your own fault.
First of all, I would like to recommend it to those who believe in fairy tales about the beautiful and sweet American life of past eras.
The synopsis of the film does not reflect a tenth of the meaning, but it is understandable, its purpose is to be short and ' dirty ' to cause interest. I also disagree with the debates that view the fate of mother and daughter purely from a personal and psychological point of view. I haven't seen the 1975 documentary, but it's clear to me that the reasons are sociopolitical. I especially don't like all the dogs hanging on Edith Sr. Yes, it is true that Edith Sr. ' strangled ' daughter, but this is only because in due time ' strangled ' her. For clarity: Edith Sr. is about the same generation as Rose of 'Titanic' so you can roughly imagine the level of pressure that American girls of that era (particularly from the affluent) were subjected to and how little choice they had in life. Even Jackie, who helped them, was only able to do so because she had successfully married. So it is not surprising that the Edith mother clinged to any thread that would connect her with the outside world.
When we see such a way of life (or rather, its absence) in life, we immediately have a thought about marginals, who are kind of “themselves guilty” & #39; But this is post-Soviet thinking, beyond which you need to go to understand this film.
The most important tragedy is that both Edith do not deserve this fate. Just before, they had the protection of a husband/father, which kept them from poverty and hopelessness, but when it was gone, they could not protect themselves, because no one taught them. On the contrary, the one who was supposed to take care of them clipped their wings and did everything to make them depend on him (don’t talk about the episode with the vacancy of the secretary, this is the same). Yes, in theory they could sell the estate, but the question is not why they did not, but why they have no way out.
Acting level. Edith the elder in the form of an old woman turned out perfect. You won't forget that! Make-up artists did a good job, and Lang & #39; picked up & #39; a game (when viewed in the original, you can hear her voice changing in different episodes). She perfectly portrayed a creative woman, slowly stunting in the dungeons 'family nest'. By the way, speaking about makeup: a separate respect to makeup artists for the fact that in the episode about the 1970s, not only Lang’s face, but also his body were made up. A common blunder in films where the old heroine is played by a younger actress: an old woman was painted on her face, and then we show her half-naked and all the suppression of distrust went to waste.
About Drew Barrymore... Young Edie looks convincing, but the one in the 1970s is not. Even in makeup, she's like a young woman. But I can't say I don't like her here: she's a cool actress anyway.
By the way, if you think about it, the very name 'Grey Gardens' became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course, this is your own name, but then you look – and indeed, gray. . .
I recommend it to those who like to look for a social background and who are interested in American history.
I recommend watching a 1975 documentary with real people, real scenery. The feature film is perfectly shot, very close to the documentary, even from the lines and dialogues of the characters. The actress outwardly made very similar to real prototypes and they coped with their roles wonderfully.
The movie isn't easy to watch. Watched it on the recommendation of several psychologists as an illustration of the behavior of a narcissistic mother and her victim. The film is very emotional, to be honest. In my view, this is a prime example of why, given the opportunity, people often choose to remain in addictive, toxic relationships. It would seem easier to go to New York and live your life there, but little Edie lived in captivity for about 30 years. In captivity of his own psyche and mind, reinforced by the destructive behavior of his mother.

I don’t like it when the plot of movies jumps from one event/time to another. But in the movie "Grey Gardens" this manner was not annoying. At first it seemed to me that this would be an ordinary drama about people’s emotional experiences, but the further it became clear that the main characters are not mentally healthy: their actions are often rash, too impulsive, contradictory and have devastating consequences. Honestly, this realization became unpleasant. Especially when I realized in the process of watching, a hundred movie biographical. I have often seen programs about mentally ill people cluttering their homes, raising a huge number of animals for which no care is taken. All this nightmare – people and animals – “marinate” in a confined space, turning the dwelling into a real biological bomb. This is extremely unpleasant, morally difficult to observe. The film made me feel the same way. Yes, the emotions are not pleasant, but strong!
Of the minuses, I can name the superficiality of what is happening in the picture: relations between people are shown as if casually: people break up, but it is not clear why. This writers did not pay attention to. But I still like to dive into the essence of things, to learn the characters of the characters. Grey Gardens seems more narrative than melodramatic. Perhaps it happened because such a long life story, which is discussed in the film, it would be difficult to squeeze into the framework of a two-hour picture, if you also reveal the characters and feelings of each secondary (but important) hero.
Overall, the film was strong and impressed me. Especially no intelligent thought from him did not take, because the main characters are mentally ill, but she experienced emotions of empathy and penetrated to the heroines. I highly recommend it!
Is a mother's life worth her daughter's? No one should sacrifice anything for the sake of another, but it is the duty of parents to release their child in time, bless and release, maintaining his faith in himself.
After watching this movie, you will want to either change something in your life or forget all this ugliness like a terrible dream. Both are good, and therefore, either you have nothing to change, or not yet the time, and it, as you know, all its own. And if you want to crawl into your hole, where it is safe, comfortable and cozy, then no one has the right to judge you if you go there, even for life. No one has the right to judge that you will not see all the beauty of the world, not feel all the beauty and splendor of the success of your talents, not experience all the happiness that you could experience, no one has the right to claim that you live not as you could, or even not as you deserve, if only it is your choice. Yours, not your fears, not your parents’ fears, or yours or their weakness. For the only purpose of fears and weaknesses is to overcome them.
To have the courage to admit to oneself one's weaknesses, to follow one's dreams and talents, to fulfill one's desires and correct one's mistakes, to rise from one's downfalls, to maintain one's faith in one another, and to overcome one's difficulties -- all these things both Edith was unwilling to do. In the end, they got what they wanted: the eldest – his house forever, the youngest – a role in the movie. Eventually, their dreams and desires came true. And yours will come true! The only question is the smallness of desires, what you are ready to be satisfied with, when and in what quantity. This is the proof of the contrary.
If you are closed anywhere, it is only in yourself!
Grey Gardens is a 2009 American television drama directed and written by Michael Saxey. This film attracts attention because of the two actresses playing the main roles - Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lang. The story of the film is quite decent, because the budget was 12 million dollars, so the quality of filming, dresses and scenery was felt.
We see a biographical history of mother and daughter stretching over forty years. We see their history against the background of the famous gray gardens.
Both American actresses played their roles decently and cleanly, revealing their characters well. Drew Barrymore was so different in this drama. She played a woman who was unlucky in love and in life, and her character lost all her hair on her head due to nerves. Drew played really talented and brave, and her performance needs to be appreciated. As for Jessica Lange, she is an amazing actress. In this television drama, Lange played a woman at different times in her life, and she did it convincingly and believably. The duet of actresses was interesting and new. As for the film itself, it will be an amateur. The drama turned out to be hazy and atmospheric, which kept a certain mystery and feminine power.
P.S. "True glamour never fades..."
To leave life is not difficult, but to sit back in it and be true to yourself no matter what.
The film may appeal to those who really have the courage in their hearts to look at their lives with eyes wide open, without concealment. It is worth watching everyone, although in some moments, when the truth really becomes prickly to pain, you begin to fidget in the chair.
I accidentally ran into this movie and did not regret it. You can enjoy watching, because the play of actresses is fascinating, the music tunes, the raised problem makes you think and start changing your life from the last minute of the movie. If you don’t change it, at least rethink it.
The main character is a charming and naive girl, like everyone at her age, she dreams of Broadway, fame and fame. However, reality bursts into her life: the seducer turns out to be a liar, the mother is unable to do without her daughter and begs to come home to the Grey Gardens. The daughter made her choice by changing her dream, which can be explained by her pity for her mother, who was left alone, or by the aggravation of the disease, which will not give or at least make it very difficult for the girl to go to the cinemas. So they have been living for fifty years on the funds, which are barely enough for the most necessary, left by their deceased husband, father in a special fund. But everything comes to an end, the fund is empty, and those who need funds cannot turn for help because of their pride. It is striking how much contrast was shown by the personal grooming of the main characters of the tape and the disgusting chaos of the house, where dirt, food remnants, old magazines, cans, in general the waste of all the inhabitants of the house (rodents, cats, raccoons) accumulated during 50 years since the departure of housekeepers. They are also interested in documentaries. With the permission of the inhabitants of the Old Gardens, the filming of a documentary begins, where the actors become those who really craved it throughout their lives. During the filming, we open all sides of the characters, the motives of their actions and the meaning of life, although all this is frivolous. And now the film was made the main actresses received a well-deserved applause from the audience, because despite the offenses and inconsistencies, they were left alone because they needed each other, because we are destined to live what is destined above and for this we need fortitude, patience, humility and courage.
