Life as Death in the Dark Cocoon A philosophical parable permeated with the Buddhist spirit. Almost all the action of the film takes place against the background of the diverse landscapes of China with their natural, discreet beauty. The unhurried rhythm of the narrative, the little-event can scare off viewers brought up on Western dynamic cinema. The old man and his young student embody a different attitude to life. An elderly musician leads a hermit lifestyle, and a young man wants to experience the charms of earthly love. The director does not seek to dot all the “i”, the film poses questions, but does not give them unambiguous answers, for a better understanding of the picture is worth watching several times.
The blindness of heroes is a metaphor for the spiritual blindness of people. The director likens the earthly life of man to the existence of a butterfly, which, as is known, first, before birth, lives in a dark cocoon. The butterfly, in Eastern culture, is a symbol of the soul, a new reincarnation, sometimes immortality.
A multifaceted film, woven from halftones, aphoristic hints, esoteric images.
