A good Russian cinema I rarely write reviews, but here is a special case. I watched this movie yesterday in a closed screening. Watched more than one... We watched together with two Chinese who are studying for the fourth year in exchange at St Petersburg University. In the course of viewing several times I heard reviews in the spirit of saying, look, and you scold your movie! Why can’t this be done in China? In principle, during this time I experienced an unusual sense of national pride. Why am I writing all this? I write this so that it would be clearer what my surprise was when this film began to be scolded in the discussion. No, they scold everything, but usually the claims still relate to the picture just viewed.
Let me explain. This movie looked very easy. A certain absurdity of all that is happening, the opposition of the world of the absurd and the world of “plastic”, which is too rational – all this was wonderful. But that's not the point. The main thing is that it bribed the style itself. I don't know, I'm not a film expert, but we agreed that it's some kind of pop art from cinema. That is, the film is not for the mass audience, but it is styled like a movie. Roughly speaking, with the help of techniques, clichés that already bear the label of template, something is not template and therefore interesting. I have never seen such analogues in our country (of course I have not seen it in the movies).
The question, which for some reason so confused all critics and which did not arise for us – “What is this film about?” I may not be digging very deeply, but to me it is a film about choosing between two paths in life, provided that both paths are not that bad, but simply ridiculous in nature. All. But it doesn't matter. This movie could have been about anything. What is important is not “what” removed, but “how” removed. After all, cinema is a visual art form, not a book on philosophy or a story. And I think that the film “Boy from Mars” will be interesting to the viewer, who is ready to watch the picture, and not set up just to have a good time for something fun.
