'We'll try first, we'll trust later.' On October 31, 2020, the whole world was stunned by the news that on the 91st year of life died an outstanding Scottish actor Sean Connery, the first and according to many the best performer of the role of the unforgettable James Bond. But not only is Connery known in this way, the viewer remembers him for the beautiful incarnations of heroes in the films ', 'The Untouchables', 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' 'The Rock' and many others, even in 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen', a film that Connery himself could not stand and, in fact, served as a catalyst to the fact that the actor decided in 2006 to finish his film career. And everywhere his characters were distinguished by nobility, leadership qualities, unflappable charisma and the power of intellect. In general, the real knights, besides that Sean Connery himself was elevated to this status by the British Queen in 2000 and became known as Sir Thomas Sean Connery.
But there were not so many socially responsible people in his career. This was his character from the film Robbery ' Trap' 1999 Robert McDougal, better known as Mack. He is a legend of the underworld, a virtuoso robber, cunning and experienced, more than once getting on the radar of the police, but each time managing to escape from their tenacious hands. But it is he who is suspected of a new dashing theft, especially this is stubbornly proved by an ambitious lady named Virginia Baker, often called Jean. She works in an insurance office as an interrogator under the patronage of Hector Cruz and persuades him to give her the case so she can get to Mac. And she does it quickly. But, however, Jean pursues his own goals and this suspects on the intuitive level of Mack, so begins a cunning game in 'cat-mouse' where the winner can get a fabulous jackpot and after forever abandon criminal activity, drinking cocktails somewhere on the shore of the Ocean.
Like all films-heists ' Trap ' built on several canons. First, the robbery itself should cause the viewer delight and awe with its scale. Secondly, the main character must have unthinkable charisma, keep the mystery and be literally shrouded in vision. Thirdly, the ending should not be trivial and then comes the factor 'X' and it can serve either another character, or the robbery itself was not done for the purpose of enrichment. In our case, this factor is a stunning Jean. In addition, that carries ' Trap' - this is several black boxes with a double bottom, where the main characters stand each other in attempts of deception and exposure. Well, it was impossible to do without a romantic line here, although, to be honest, ' Trap' it would be better without it and apparently because of this, the jury of the anti-awards ' Golden Raspberry' awarded the characters of the film the nomination ' Worst Screen Duo'. And indeed - love 'chemistry' between them was not observed, some alienated they were and connected them only by the nature of adventurers.
And the rest of the acting remains at a high level. Sean Connery is an actor from that category, who by his appearance immediately attracts attention to his person, sire, character. And his Mac turned out to be very, very convincing: intelligent, dexterous, careful with detail, as well as mysterious and able to hide their true motives. To expose his nature is almost unimaginable. This is a romantic image, but let's not forget that his Mac is a criminal. The role of Jean went to Catherine Zeta-Jones. I can’t say that she convinced me as much as Sean Connery, but the fact that she approached the role with all her professionalism and diligence is not taken away. One scene with the passage through the beams of guard rays, what are they worth? Will Patton and Wing Rames confidently added colors to the picture, or without them would have been ' Trap' turned into too schematic film and would hardly have been awarded audience recognition. And again - without the fact that ' Golden Raspberry' did not bypass this picture of attention.
A good, strong and competent picture in the spirit of ' film-robbery' where some things became canonical and even got into other films (the same scene with rays and plastic Catherine Zeta-Jones). The actors try to do everything right and even in the image of an international criminal with the status of a legend of his case, Sean Connery leaves only positive emotions about his cause. You can watch ' Trap' not only for fans of the genre, but at least because you have not seen it yet and thus can respect the memory of the brilliant Sir Thomas Sean Connery.
