A light, gentle, kind, beautiful film about true love and friendship that will always be with us, no matter what. Beautiful young Tom Cruise and charming Elizabeth Shue. The perfect summer romantic movie ♥️
These professors did not say anything that was relevant to real life.
- If you understand this, education is over.
I love this movie, so I really enjoyed watching it again. I like pretty much everything here and not just because of Tom Cruise, although he's very good. There is an interesting plot, a lot of food for thought, motivation to work on yourself, great directing, many instructive moments, a lot of fun, great music and much more.
Brian Flanagan is a hero who you want to look up to, returning from the army, he has a lot of energy and strength and he wants to show himself, he is really hungry for big victories.
I really love the episode when he was looking for a job, as it is familiar, somehow it is customary and unfair. You fight like a fish against ice, and you are denied absolutely everything, as if you are some kind of rejected and unnecessary person. The director perfectly showed how difficult it is for a young man to find his place.
This guy was the best bartender on 14th Street. That's what killed him.
But everything changes when Bryan meets Doug Coglin, from that moment his life becomes different, and the whole film looks on a completely different level. It becomes more sense, energy, a great mood. It was a great tandem to watch them work as bartenders and dream of a better life. It causes a lot of emotions that cannot be described in words. You have to get in and feel it. I felt how strong it was.
It was absolutely everything. Active life, fun, sea of events, love, betrayal and much more.
The hero of Cruise is very fond of money and dreams of rising as high as possible, he wants to earn a million so much that he does not see what he has around him, and after all, a million is before his eyes. A million is Jordan Mooney. Jordan is better than a million. This is a real, loyal, loving girl. You look at it not only with pleasure, but also with respect. Their relationship takes the film to an even higher level. Their love is so complicated, but so beautiful.
Tom Cruise, perfectly showed an ambitious guy who does not dream of a bright future, but really does everything to prove himself. The passion he used to work as a bartender, the way he grabbed everything on the fly, is respectable. Again, the tandem with Brian Brown was great. For a while it seemed that this is the best friendship that can be, then of course everything changes, but the finale does not leave indifferent. And watching young Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue is probably the most beautiful thing in this film.
Brian Brown, I really liked the role of Doug Coglin. He has his own unique style, his own quotes and his own vision of the world. There is something to learn and not to do.
Elizabeth Shu, in the role of Jordan Mooney very much liked. A very simple, loyal, loving girl who appreciates quite simple things in men. It was a pleasure to watch her, conquers from the first minutes, even when her stubbornness came to the fore - it was very much liked in her.
Gina Gershon, her role is small, but memorable. She portrayed her character in all her negative qualities.
Cocktail is a great movie that you want to watch for mood, motivation and nostalgia. There’s a lot to pay attention to.
I remember this movie with Uncle Tom Cruise’s phrase about money. He does not pour beer for his nephew, who returned from the army, for free, but presents him with his judgments, which Tom Cruise allegedly took from him, on what money is in general and how to earn it. I am sure that the actor knew all this without his uncle. Or rather, not an actor, but a hero. And not a hero, Tom Cruise. Everything is intertwined here.
I’ve always seen this movie as a farewell to Tom Cruise as he says goodbye to his real bartender image (the name “Cocktail” defines) and hits out at successful businessmen, patriotic soldiers and doctors. All these commercially successful projects please the audience, especially viewers, help reveal the actor’s partners on the set, but do not fit with the face of Tom Cruise, not burdened by mental activity. Why don't he play something simpler, bartender again, you see, and the Oscars finally come. It is already uncomfortable at all, even DiCaprio gave it.
In general, Cruz’s reasoning in Cocktail on the topic that the restaurant table consists of items whose creators have long been millionaires, any little thing – toothpicks, stands, etc., just reflect the fact that he himself did not succeed in this field, but became a millionaire a long time ago. This movie, for example, brought him a very decent amount.
The tender-sweet love story in Cocktail, Baylis is essentially duly diluted with burning pathos club sambuca and male realism, the bartender's sober mind, absinthe swelled on top. It turned out a kind of Hiroshima, contradictory and explosive. Brian Brown, the alternative bartender, is also organic and predictable. Even Gina Gershon quickly flashed to call again in a couple of years.
In general, the film is somewhere frivolous, somewhere philosophical, somewhere very fashionable for 1988, especially if you compare it with the “Little Faith” that we released that year. Somewhere it's just for teenagers. And the film is very American, maybe one of the most characteristic. Tom Cruise, of which I am absolutely certain, is the place where the American spirit and his own identity are fully reflected. And an unequal marriage is an eternal plot for cinema. They believe in him even more than in a miracle, in the victory of the national football team, in the decline in gasoline prices, in the revival of small business. Most importantly, getting married is much easier than all of the above.
Drink me a cocktail, I want to drink until morning
What a life and true film, filled with tragedy and irony of fate, love and infidelity, friendship and betrayal.
Tom Cruise is the embodiment of the image of a young man, before whom the horizons of life are just opening, who has to make a choice: study or work, or combine both; the image of a person before whom a normal life question arises: how to get rich, how to find that very “gold mine”, catch the blue bird of luck by the tail, given that you have not a penny behind you. The eternal questions of billions of people. Tom Cruise is a great master of his craft. At the time, he was just honing his skills.
I really liked the image of Barman Cooglin, played by actor Brian Brown, mentor of a young student-bartender Brian, with his peculiar everyday philosophy, thoughts, views, Cooglin’s laws.
And, despite all the twists and turns of fate, the periodic quarrels of these two people, they still became bosom friends, because they successfully complemented each other, constantly taught each other. Despite everything, Mr. Cooglin taught Brian a lot about the basics of his profession, and life in general. As Mr. Cooglin said: “You will not get the necessary knowledge about life in universities, but here at the bar.”
Both wanted to get rich, only Brian - by obtaining the necessary specialty, and Cooglin by easy profit. In the end, fate will tell who is right.
The last scene of Cooglin’s letter addressed to his friend Brian is really sad and blows a tear when you realize there’s nothing left to return. And the constant scenes with mischief and ease in working at the bar counter to cheerful music in the duo of partners are incendiary.
An interesting story filled with love themes, this story is real, everything is true in it. There is no falsehood, there is a lot of real life. I advise everyone to watch who is interested in realistic themes of the 80-90s of cinema.

“It is a bad soldier who does not want to be a general.” There is probably no person who would not hear this proverb and I think just perfectly reveals the whole spirit of human nature. After all, those who do not want to find monetary success, realize all their dreams and, as it is customary to say in the people, “live in chocolate”. ? The same person is an ordinary guy Brian Flanagan, who returned from the army set himself a goal - to become a millionaire and is ready to go for this dream almost anything. It's like walking on heads, or walking from one rich person's bed to another.
This film directed by Roger Donaldson is an interesting plot mix and twist of several genres at once. What at that time was a bold approach to filmmaking and in this case, is one of the strongest sides of the picture. On the one hand, we have a typical love melodrama about the love feelings of two young people and the obstacles that arise in their way. On the other hand, we have another dramatic comedy about trying to succeed and find your place in the sun in the best traditions of the American dream and the tale of Cinderella. It is also gratifying that each of the genres of Donaldson brings almost to perfect condition, and the cocktail of two genres created by him creates a very rich and interesting feature film on the screen for viewing.
Being already established and one of the most notable directors of his time, Donaldson appeared on the screen as always at the highest point of his directorial talent. The film looks very easy, naturally, stylish and very vital. In many ways, due to the very correct granulation of fabulousness and harsh realism encountered on the way of the main character to find himself. Since despite a certain kind of pathetic finale of the film, the film gives the most valuable advice that can only be given to a young man who blindly believes that he is able to bend the whole world under himself. Never give up, work hard, and only then even your craziest desires can turn into reality, but even in such moments, do not forget who you are, where you started and who is next to you in these happiest and hardest moments of life. After all, what is all this if there is not the very person with whom you can share the fruits of your labor and effort?
One of the main advantages of the picture is certainly a magnificent duet of Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue. Both actors are so young that it is incredibly pleasant and interesting to watch them. Cruz has already managed to catch luck by the tail against the background of the success of the films “Top Gan” and “Risk Business”, but has not yet managed to be noted in the legendary “Rain Man”. Shu also gained special sympathy and popularity of the audience, but has not yet managed to leave its mark in the legendary franchise “Back to the Future”. On the eve of the rapid rise of their careers, both actors played on the screen very natural, strong and certainly very conscientious roles. Moreover, the indescribable chemistry between the actors allows you to sincerely believe in the feelings of their characters on the screen. Damn good and Brian Brown, who embodied on the screen an extremely charismatic and bright image of the mentor of the life of the main character and it is impossible not to mention Gina Gershon. Even though the role she got extremely episodic.

The cocktail is a cinematic cocktail of love melodrama and a dramatic comedy about trying to succeed, which causes the same interest and pleasure every time you see a picture. Very stylish, lifelike, easy and interesting feature film, which I think is worth watching for everyone.
Brian Flanagan, after completing his military service, is full of ambition and determination to pursue a career in the big city. However, difficulties with getting a job did not take long - everyone tells the guy that he needs a diploma from a higher education institution. And then, the guy has no choice but to calm down and, after unsuccessful wanderings down Wall Street, wrap up in the nearest bar for a job announcement. There he meets an experienced bartender Doug Coglin, who teaches him the skill to interfere with cocktails and the ability to correctly “roll” to the weaker sex. Things go uphill, and, after a while, fate sets the main character a test of strength, confronting him face to face with deception, temptations, as well as a charming modest artist named Jordan.
Apparently, this youth melodrama became a “red rag” for critics and “Golden Raspberry” (anti-prize for the worst film and script) only because of the fact that no, no, but there was a parallel with Martin Scorsese’s film “The Color of Money” (1986), in which the same Tom Cruise played a very similar role as Brian Brown in his image of a burnt bartender, clearly a player by nature, could not but remind of Paul Newman in the role of a billiard shark. Viewers reacted to the film Roger Donaldson much more loyal, given that he was very successful at the box office, and still remember him and remember in a rather positive way. From myself, I can say that the film did not seem terrible to me at all, in general, the action looked pleasant and not boring, albeit in an American fabulously naive way. Therefore, the obscenity of some scenes was inevitable. As for analogies - only the similar level of performance "Bar Ugly Coyote", released 12 years later, came to mind. Tom Cruise perfectly fits into the role of a young handsome bartender, he does not even need to try hard to play, as it does a luscious appearance inherent in most representatives of this profession. Man-charisma, however, among the acting ensemble is the Australian actor Brian Brown in the role of a cunning mentor and rival of the young man. There are often cases when the raspberry raids on films that are positioned in advance as something grandiose, and, as a result, inflated requirements and expectations, after which, at the sight of a quite ordinary film, an attack with “plastic berries” follows. Cocktail is an example of such a film, although it is just a simplified version of academic Wall Street, only diluted with liters of sweet Orgasm (it's a cocktail!) in the form of Tom Cruise and more like the bartender's career dreams of his own drinking establishment and a fully arranged personal life.

Cocktail is a very kind and positive film. It's a mood-boosting movie! The film stars Young Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue. It was wonderful to see them when they were young.
We see how the main character changes throughout the film, and how fate experiences him all the time. He works as a bartender, then opens his own business, meets a young and beautiful girl, then loses her, becomes an alphonse and lives on the maintenance of a rich woman, but then he overestimates everything, throws his ambitions aside and realizes that the most important thing in life is love.
In the film there are beautiful places by the sea. The actors Cruz and Shu made up a very nice duet. They are very sympathetic to me in this film. You look at what they are and how they were back in 1988, and you realize how beautiful youth is.
I liked this movie apart from the excellent performance of the main characters because it has a good atmosphere and an interesting script. I'm sure all Tom Cruise fans will appreciate this movie. What I liked most about Cocktail was the young Elizabeth Shue. She's just wonderful in this movie. I think that watching "Cocktail" for any moviegoer is a must!

The whole philosophy of the film, which is very strongly said, fits into a phrase said somewhere in the middle: there are whores and hardworking people in life, the first never work, and the second never walk. If the movie is right, then the morality is obvious. True, as always, the wrong hero is very charming, and therefore much more cute than the right one, even if his universal charm Tom Cruise plays. There is also a girl (Elizabeth Shue).
Brian Flanagan, returning from the army, is preoccupied with the American dream of earning a million, but for now has somewhere to interrupt at least a penny, which leads him to a typical American bar to the atypical American bartender Doug Coglen.
And then there was the development of the moral dilemma mentioned above: work ethic and family values versus easy quick money and lots of women. You already know what will happen.
