Love your neighbor. The war is almost over, only Japan refuses to surrender. And the war continues... Scottish soldiers, losing the battle, are captured. You can't get out of here because they're in the jungles of Thailand. There is nowhere to go.
This is one of those movies where the title is fully realized in the last minutes of the film. So clear and clear, like an epiphany. The last war. At the end of the picture is such a beautiful, sad and majestic moment that a tear breaks through the especially impressionable. I will definitely watch the ending again today.
But that doesn’t matter, because even my description above gives the film the wrong impression. It's special because it's not about soldiers who sacrifice themselves for the state, hate and kill their enemies. Yes, of course, that’s what honor and justice are all about. But it's different. The war will not end when the papers are announced and signed. It ends in people’s hearts and minds. When people lay down their arms and stop fighting.
It is usually shown how important it is to give oneself to destroy the enemy. Those who refuse to fight for religious or other reasons are traitors. The Bible says, “Love your neighbor.” The question is, who is your neighbor? He was asked, and Jesus gave an example of a parable in which a man from an enemy people was in trouble. A little later Jesus said that one should love one’s enemy, and this is true love, because there is nothing special about loving those who are good to us. Our neighbor is anyone. All people. Including enemies.
Pretty weird, huh? But this is exactly the theme in the war film. It was the people who decided to end the war. And it's over. For them, it ended before Japan surrendered.
Ian, Carlisle's hero, I understand him. He's a classic, loyal soldier. That's what soldiers do in war. They hate the enemy. That's how they're raised. There's us, and there's the enemy. It must be destroyed even by its own precious life. He always plays the bully. Very good in his role.
The main character, Ernie, has a mentally handicapped face. I know a lot of people love this actor. In any case, I have positive emotions both from his game and from his image.
As well as from the only American in their society - his story is one of the brightest.
In the film, cruel things are shown, and it is scary that these are all real events. This railway is built on the corpses of white people. That was the atmosphere in those camps. I really liked the ideology of the film. This is my opinion, no loyalty to the state will make me kill. And here it's voiced. That enemies are people too. Who called them the enemy? They're neighbors. The truth is, there is no truth in war. The truth of war is blurred with blood.
The movie has a fat '+'. Definitely.
