19th century. After the death of her mother, an orphan Mary visits Aunt Paishans in Cornwell. Auntie turned out to be a strangely downtrodden person, her husband is a rude despotic type, and the inn “Jamaica” is a gloomy wreck in which there are never visitors. There is also a brutal gang of smugglers and murderers operating around, and guess what her uncle is up to?
Tract “Jamaica” by Daphne Du Maurier was filmed many times, the first version is generally the work of Hitchcock, even before “Rebecca” and “Birds” according to her books.
I remember when people praised the 1983 miniseries, but the latest version is always the most interesting, right? Especially here Lady Sybill from the famous Abbey in the title role, well, how to miss?
As always when shooting in Cornwall, he overshadows everything. Huge cold moorlands under the lead sky create an unbearable atmosphere of a hostile world. And if even in the middle of such a wasteland to put a collapsing inn with dirt to the knee in the yard, that's all, you can immediately hang yourself in such a depressing place. And even music is finished, so that at all. And now, in the midst of this despondency, an unbending girl in a red dress walks around and doesn’t let anyone get bored. Of course, she'll go where she shouldn't go and fall in love with someone she shouldn't, and trust someone she shouldn't. And what do you want, principled village girls without adventure on the fifth point do not.
The only thing that “Lady Sibbil” and “village” somehow combine little, especially on the floor she does not spit, behaves more less decently, and in general, beautiful. Played well, too, sometimes so principled fool that only naked rock. And her voice is interesting - low, hoarse, like nails on the fence. Another of the curious faces lit up a couple of men from the series “Ladies’ happiness”. I watched them almost in a row and amused myself with this change of image.
The story is, of course, quite simple, such a romantic detective where you quickly understand who is who. And it seems to me mainly due to the lack of crowding, in ten pine trees it would be more interesting to wander, but the creators can see quite poorly with a budget. But it takes the atmosphere, thickened so much that it is already invigorating, and harsh characters - it was quite interesting to watch who will outplay whom.
