Fantastic thriller. You can look, you keep your eye on it, you wait for a clue. But in the end, you realize that a lot of things have been pulled by the ears. .
As they have already done with the promotion of interracial relations. I watched on the positive almost to the very end, but the final spoiled the impression.
Jim Mickle, who previously shot several good genre films (for example, the vampire neo-western “Land of the Vampires” or the action movie “Cold in July”) in the fall of 2019, released “In the Shadow of the Moon” on Netflix.
Do not go to the fortune teller - a year later he voted for Biden.
Therefore, the film is worth watching if only for the sake of imbuing yourself with how skillfully and ahead of time the artistic justifications of BLM, the “new ethics” and other joys of a tolerant global world were prepared in the cinema.
There are merits. Quite skillfully invented fantastic premise (to the real sci-fi, the film, of course, it is not twisted - but recalls, for example, "12 monkeys", which is also not bad). The work of makeup / costumers / artists (the plot develops for 40 years). An intriguing setup and the first twenty minutes.
It's gonna get worse. There is no clear antagonist (in fact, you can do without it - but you need to be, for example, Terry Gilliam), the dynamics float, stamps replace the remnants of realism.
But that's not the point. The film unambiguously justifies punishment for “wrong” thoughts, punishment without trial for imperfect crimes, cruel totalitarianism of a smiling kind of good in relation to an unpleasant kind of evil. And this is not a dystopia (as, for example, Spielberg/Phillip Dick’s “Minority Opinion”) – this is quite a program of action (fantastic elements for the finale are becoming increasingly absurd), then a way of thinking that leaves no room not only for doubts, but also for the elementary presumption of innocence that justifies any lawlessness in the name of a bright future.
Something my intuition tells me that the vast majority of films from Netflix are rare, banal and absolute primitivism, ranging from animated series to films. Well, I have not seen a single so far exciting film from this studio that would take my breath away and somehow managed to surprise me with its extraordinary plot.
The film In the Shadow of the Moon directed by the know-name is completely boring and not interesting. At first, I thought that this is a psychological thriller with elements of horror, but then the plot was sharply twisted, where allegedly the main character, mulatto Cleopatra Coleman, kills some future rebels who are members of a certain militaristic far-right organization, from whose members she wants to save the world.
But this story about saving the world looks so poor and flawed against the background of these ridiculous chases on a motorcycle and a pickup truck. The acting is also very sluggish and very trivial.
All in all, 115 minutes of wasted time. If you really want to watch high-quality fiction, see whether it is better to watch Blade Runner 2049 with Ryan Gosling in the lead roles, or 2012 with my beloved John Cusack. Moral pleasure and high from watching I guarantee.
This is a movie, just a twist of the brain, if you look carefully, then there is no misunderstanding, the plot is interesting, plus a cool game of actors ... I'm the highest prom. . 10 out of 10. 28.10.2019. 10.
Suddenly, the action movie with chases and shooting turned into also relatively interesting fiction. No fantastic special effects, but anyway. You can see it!
The story of how fools decided to make the world better.
The beginning of the film is very cheerful. The first twenty minutes of the viewer is waiting for a dynamically developing plot, a good work of actors, a gloomy atmosphere of the night city and a tied intrigue. There is a desire to look further. But by the middle, the movie is running out. It's getting fresh and predictable. It turned out to be another passing action, for one evening.
But the very formulation of the question causes rejection. It is extremely naive and foolish to believe that killing a few urban lunatics who have sucked another radical, far-right ideology out of their fingers will prevent a global conflict.
If someone had gone back in time and killed Hitler, do you think that would have changed a lot? No way. The same Nazism in Germany became possible not because the failed artist began to shout slogans, but because after the First World War there was a complex of political, economic and social contradictions. Remove Hitler and the German oligarchs will find another talker ready to defend their interests. And German patriots-militarists, dissatisfied with the outcome of the First World War, will find a new leader. And so on. Only the details would change, but not the essence and scale of what is happening.
Civil wars and other social conflicts don’t start because of ideas or slogans. They are based on serious, deep social and economic contradictions.
If there are critical beggars, disadvantaged people, there is always an inspiration for them. It could be anything from religion to scientific concept. And the elimination of an individual ideologist who wrote another pathos pamphlet “For everything good, against everything bad” on a global scale will not change anything.

This 'picture' is the real Overton Window into the minds of ordinary Americans. Under the guise of a good and correct idea of the eternal: ' for everything good and against everything bad' the idea of justifying control over the direction of development of the future, and as a result, direct control over the rights and freedoms of citizens, both unborn and those who lived before, is thrown into the minds of the audience. How empty this idea is and at the same time destructive to the country is hard to imagine. After all, without mistakes and conclusions, society is infinitely doomed to step on the same rake in history. This means that it eventually ceases to evolve.
In the 1930s, people were frightened by communists and thought criminals, but now they are afraid of the future, which is not predetermined, although according to the creators of the film is very grim, a priori.
The film ' In the Shadow of the Moon' is not just an example of bad fiction. This is an example of lack of ideas, multiplied by lazy directing and seasoned with a small budget from Netflix.
The plot of the picture is brazenly taken from the old “The verdict of time” with Eric Roberts, by the way, a good film.
A string of strange murders occurs in the city, the perpetrator remains undetected and undetectable until a certain point. An ambitious police officer Lockhart intervenes. Driven by the desire to become a detective, he manages to capture a mysterious criminal. But after 9 years, everything repeats itself and it seems that even the killer is the same. So what's the matter?
In fact, slightly changed the ending and removed the best that was in the sentence of time. Namely, the moral component, even the teaching part. Instead, we tried to present supposedly science fiction. In this part, the film is not at all successful, and there is no science fiction there. For the tick, of course, there are a couple of moments, but nothing is really explained to the viewer, only given as given, trying to play on emotions and cause the mystery of empty interest. The film is also very small.
The choice of actors is not unambiguous, Officer Lockhard, his partner Maddox, Holt and the little girl certainly coped well. Cleopatra Coleman, the girl is beautiful, but the image in the picture is not feminine, and there was nothing to play, little screen time, little emotion, and few lines.
There is no musical accompaniment, the usual background music is not memorable.
At the end of the film, an unnecessary speech of many words, trying to give the picture meaning. I watched the movie wrongly because the trailer was about vampires.
The authors who made this allegedly fantastic film should stand trial, not before film critics and audiences at screenings.
Philippe Dick has already answered the questions asked in this film, in his work “Minority Opinion”, on which the film was also made. The question was: can the “guilty” of crimes be punished if the crimes have not yet been committed? What about the presumption of innocence? And in general, is there a fate that cannot be changed?
This film does not just ask the same questions, but answers in a completely certain way: it is not only possible to punish, but also necessary, and not just to punish, but to kill.
The whole difference in the chain of events of this film with “Minority opinion” – in the latter, decisions are made on the basis of looking into the future, and in this – on the basis of looking into the past.
Why are the answers to this film completely totalitarian? Because “the carriers of an alien ideology must be exterminated before it spreads” is an almost literal quote from the film. This is the totalitarian ideology underlying both Nazism and communism. In the film, it is served first in a detective wrapper (i.e., search for answers to questions), and then in a pink wrapper of melodrama, to evoke a tear of tenderness from sympathy with the main character. Which at first seems to be “neutral”, and then becomes a clear adept of “killing unwanted in the past”.
Therefore, it is necessary to judge customers, directors and screenwriters for such propaganda, and not to give it to the audience and film critics.

So, imagine a movie with the following plot: a blue-eyed tall blonde from the future goes to the past, where consistently and methodically, with special cruelty, kills men and women. As the film progresses, it is revealed that he is doing this because these men and women are fighting for the rights of blacks, lesbians, transgender people. The victims are left-wing activists, feminists and anti-whites. Moreover, the film is built in such a way that the viewer will empathize with the killer, and especially sensitive even cry to sad music, where it turns out that the killer is the grandson of a policeman who chased the killer all his life. If the killer does not complete his lofty mission of killing people with the wrong ideas, the future will be monstrous. Migrants with dark skin and Islam in their heads will stage a series of terrorist attacks, after which a civil race war will begin in the United States.
Did you imagine a movie like that? I can't do that. I do not imagine that such a film, fully truthfully describing the present and the near future, was released on screens. If such a film was made, then from the screenwriter and director, to the last make-up artist and driver, they would be fired with a terrible scandal, and someone might be imprisoned.
However, when a perfectly comparable film is made, only the killer is a black woman, and she kills white people for being white and belonging to the party of white nationalists, then this film is quietly released. The film is about empathizing with a black murderer of white people. The killer is the daughter of a black and white man. Of course, how could it be otherwise - a child of interbreeding. It’s an absolutely fascist film that promotes the extermination of whites. Propaganda murder of white people who dare to defend themselves. Moreover, judging by the rating, most viewers have already been so brainwashed that they do not think about what ideas are shoved into their heads. And for what purpose.
The story begins in 1988. On a regular working day, several people mysteriously die in different parts of the city. From the footage of the film it seems that this is an epidemic ' from space ' but this is not at all true. The day ends and life continues in its own way. Surprisingly, exactly 9 years later on the same day, the events are repeated again and at this moment the main character is triggered 'Switch' and it is completely jammed on this story! Now his life is divided into intervals of 9 years and he waits every time & #39; day X' and searches for clues to this strange story.
Neither detective, nor even more fiction - none of this stood under the genre. It's just a thriller, so I thought it would be a normal maniac movie. But it turned out differently, fiction is closely intertwined with the detective. Who doesn’t like mystery and mystery? This movie also hooked me and 'my switch' worked. Even though the movie is 2 hours long, I didn’t notice it. Like the main character, I was looking for answers. There are a lot of mysteries. The plot develops in a spiral and each new round gives one answer. The action is quite dynamic, I did not want to sleep, but wanted to know the truth. In this film there is no space at all, but the role of the moon is still very important.
Somewhere around 1.5 hours of viewing, my doubts began to creep in and I almost guessed the finale. But the impression of the film did not spoil. After watching, I pondered the action of the plot and found a couple ' misses'. I think it is possible to continue. Of the disadvantages, if you look at the whole, the film is quite simple and primitive idea. But how it's done! That's great.
It would seem that you can come up with a new in such fiction, where there is time travel, but as it turns out - you can and how! The plot for me was non-trivial, unpredictable and very exciting. I paused the film periodically to think and bring all the logical threads together. And at the very beginning of the film - I failed, for which I was very grateful to the creators of such a plot, because it is an intrigue!
What attracts a beginning? Three unusual deaths that occur simultaneously. At the same time, the victims are at a decent distance from each other, they do not know each other and, most importantly, they are ordinary people who do not cause antipathy in the viewer. Immediately in my head the questions arise: why exactly they? How did one man manage to kill everyone in such an unusual way at the same time? And what kind of strange dialogue came out between the main character and the criminal? Questions, questions are questions and no guesses, because I repeat: I didn’t know it was fantastic. I thought it was just a thriller. Probably, because of this ignorance, I found the film even more interesting in contrast to those who knew that this movie is a fantastic picture. The film is divided into several parts, where the action time changes every time for nine years ahead - on the same date. At first, I didn't understand why. But then everything emerges and folds like a puzzle. Very interesting and interesting puzzle.
The hero of the film came out real. He feels all the experiences, all the anger that has accumulated, all the instability, mania, obsession with one thing. I felt very sorry for the main character at the end - it's a strong plot twist when he learns the truth. How we, the audience, also dive into the truth and the whole picture that has been building for so long throughout the film is crumbling. Moreover, the picture is beautiful and unusual, but instead there is an even more magnificent spectacle that you do not expect to see. And this truth is so sharp and unexpected that you can not even believe, because still believe in that old picture, folded from the puzzle.
In general, the film was of high quality. And due to the unpredictable fantastic plot, and thanks to the excellent acting. The only ' but' why I can’t say about the film that it’s a masterpiece is that very paradox of time travel. I will not pat it and reveal it - after all, then there will be no intrigue, but I will only say that this very paradox is at the same time a highlight of the film. After all, in this paradox, logic breaks down and the viewer’s brain tries to find logical threads to connect them. And it doesn't work. However, as I said, there is also beauty in it.
I definitely recommend the tape to anyone who loves temporal fiction. I'm one of them. That’s why I enjoyed and enjoyed watching. After watching it, I kept relishing the story. After all, the head continued to search for answers to those questions that arose and intrigued. As I began to understand what was going on in the film, I realized that it reminded me of a time patrol with Ethan Hawke. So I’ll tell you right away: if you love time travel movies and love puzzles-paradoxes caused by this temporal fiction, I think you will appreciate the picture.

The movie's bad. The beginning is intriguing, but only for a short time. The detective component itself is very weak, that is, the policeman goes in the car and sees the suspect, that is the whole investigation. And then the vinaigret begins - 'Ala Terminator' mixed with Hindu concepts about the cycle of the phases of the moon and the time transport corridors associated with it. With murder in general 'Akhtung'! It turns out that someone from the future launches them, because simple physical elimination does not fall within the framework of this phantasmagoric movie.
The main character is trying to play in the style of Matthew Maconahue and these attempts we observe forty minutes of total time, which translates the picture into the category of melodramas. There is an attempt to twist the plot with a time loop, but after half an hour of viewing it fails. The plot in general in the picture sags as much as time travel is explainable in it. The heroine constantly arrives in the past in a hoodie and thorns and knowing everything for forty years ahead, rushes back and forth to prevent some large-scale terrorist attack from fertilizers because of which the civil war is about to begin.
So we have a very low-budget film (the heroine arrives from the future in the aquarium all the time to one point of the sewer!) with a bad plot, talentless actors and a huge aplomb for science fiction. After 30 minutes, it becomes clear that this is a stupid hoax and you do not need to waste time on it, even the head begins to make noise.
I was thinking for a long time whether to write a review of this film. . .
The most primitive plot of three bricks. Minimum, if not complete absence, at least some explanation from the point of view of science (every 9 years the moon decreases...). In general, from the point of view of science fiction, it is a dummy. For example, why was it necessary to pump in a radioactive element and kill, starting the process remotely from the future? This is exactly what we were trying to do with pigs. Can't you start it right away? For what from the future? Is it like inventing a tank that will fire shells, and they will explode when their descendants decide? Oh, that's ridiculous!
From the point of view of the work of art, there is no character (the main character, his daughter, ' the killer' friend) all empty, no motivation, no explanation, one can only guess that the main character hopes to save his wife in the past, but HOW??? The script has not been worked out at all, or it practically does not exist. Play actors frankly no that the main character that ' killers'.
From the point of view of 'contemporary cinema' and this is now a new measure: no normal special effects, no entertainment. Pro ' Time machine' silent, just funny: aquarium, hoses... How could you not show a black woman? Then the film would not have been released at all. . .
My opinion is that this is another parody not only of fiction, but of the movie as a whole.
Fantastic detective "In the shadow of the moon", released by Netflix, tells the story of the investigation of one crime committed in 1988. More like three crimes. Tom Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook) left his pregnant wife at home and went on night duty. As it turned out, this shift will change his whole life - in the course of the work he will have to face the killer of three people who operated in three different places, but killed people at the same time. As a result of the chase and accident, the suspect dies, and after a long 9 years everything repeats itself. The same signs of death, the same marks on the body and, worst of all, the same suspect who died in the subway.
Starting from the 80s, the narrative plunges the viewer into the atmosphere of the first “Terminator” in terms of pictures and color saturation. The director competently recreates the penultimate decade of the last century, transfers some of the events to rather gloomy and overgrown with garbage alleys, where a tape recorder looks spectacularly on the fence from a rabies net, which is a reference to a long-gone era of cassettes. Further scenes (other than the latter) are not tied to the details of the time they reflect, although a fair number of years pass. In this regard, Jim Mickle somewhat misses his own tone. But in defense, everything that happens after a bad night at a subway station is centered on one hero: Tom Lockhart and his investigation.
9 years after the events in the subway, he is already a detective and again finds himself involved with his partner Maddox (Bokim Woodbine) in the investigation of similar murders, believing that he is dealing with a follower. But the thread he found does not lead to the results he hoped for, because the case of the “three murders” becomes his idea of a fix that pursues and does not give a calm life. In this regard, Holbrooke's character is similar to Jack Nicholson's character, Jerry Black, from Sean Penn's The Promise. There, Jerry Black promises the mother of a murdered girl to find a murderer. That’s just the investigation takes the whole life of the hero, and the finale of “Promise” becomes an incredible combination of circumstances, from which it becomes clear that Black will be very difficult to keep his word. The same goes for Tom Lockhart, who puts everything he has on the line just to find the killer and stop her. After all, the words she said in the subway, then in 1988, do not give him peace.
The basis of the film “In the shadow of the moon” is the theme of temporal jumps, while the creators tie to their idea such a phenomenon as the Supermoon (an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the full moon or new moon coincides with perigee – the moment of the greatest convergence of the moon and the Earth). The satellite of our planet, which already affects the Earth, also makes it possible to make certain temporary jumps.
Everything would be fine, but this is only the beginning of the plot twisting, because from the point of view of Tom Lockhart, his partner and others, everything goes in accordance with the passage of time: past – present – future. And not the other way around. But in the case of a mysterious girl in a blue hoodie suspected of murder, it turns out exactly the opposite. In this regard, what was shown at the very beginning (for example, her hand) is explained after time (years in this case), because once she was in 1988, she already experienced what was with her 9 years later in 1997, and also 9 years later in 2006. To give a simple example, it can be described as follows:
In 1988, we had a giant oak tree, already split in two by lightning. I see this oak already so, almost dead, I see it 9 years later in 1997 - it is still intact. I see him being struck by lightning and he's splitting, and I realize that in '97 something happened to him that led to his death in '88. And in 2006, I understand that the lightning strike in the oak tree, which was intact in 2006 and 1997 before the impact, was caused by the fact that it had a metal swing, which was hung there in 2006 by the head of a family. That is, in other words, with the oak, as well as the girlfriend-suspect, everything happens in reverse - as with Benjamin Button.
Difficult to understand, but interesting and exciting, the film “In the shadow of the moon” allows you to enjoy its concept, offering the viewer on the one hand a simple, but very capacious film material about time travel and changing the past.
The use of the Idea concept in the film, as presented by Christopher Nolan in Inception, is also very interesting. Jim Mickle talks about how the Idea that lives in the minds of thousands of people can be eradicated. What must be done so that this Idea never settles in the minds of rebels? Of course, as in the case of the disease - to strike at the center of the disease!
What also drew attention was the apparent reference of the creators to the terrorist attack in the United States in Oklahoma City in 1995, when a parked car exploded near a federal building. More than 150 people were killed and about 700 others were wounded. The organizers of that explosion were members of a far-right American organization who were guided by their beliefs, but according to one conspiracy theory, the explosion was staged by the government to promote a tough anti-terrorism law.
Having such references and reasons for reflection, the film “In the shadow of the moon” seems to me fascinating for all its simplicity and low budget. One of the final scenes reveals the drama of the hero who spent his best years on the case, and another episode gives an insight into the eradication of the Idea in the minds of people.
But look at you. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
Sometimes, when watching a movie, déjà vu can occur. This happens, of course, if the film is a remake and you saw the original, or when the film has a lot in common with some film, but the copyright is not infringed ("Well, wait" and "Tom and Jerry, for example). This déjà vu happened to me in part with "In the Shadow of the Moon."
The story. 1988. People are dying in the city from strange injections. Investigating the case, the policeman is faced with a number of incomprehensible moments that after 9 years lead him to the idea that the killer is a time traveler.
The first association I had was Angel of Darkness (1989), which was also known at the box office as I Came in Peace - the same shots, the same aliens, the same police, and the same time. I can’t say anything, but the parallels of some plot decisions are obvious to me.
In addition, if the first half of “In the shadows” is in the style of “action” and especially no time to think about logic, the second turns into a collection of illogical solutions to confirm the integrity of the storyline. The viewer has time to think about why they remembered the keys exactly after 9 years, why the killer to give an injection to the victim, if he is already near the victim, etc. The result is predictable.
A big plus for me is the idea of traveling back in time by leaps of 9 years as a one-way ticket and what a time traveler had, everyone will still have. .
A month before the release of 'Terminator: Dark Fate & #39; I want to say a few words. There is nothing eternal, especially peace. War is not caused by the idea - and hatred of one to others, here the authors of the new film & #39; In the shadow of the moon & #39; rather not thought out. Anyone who harms the Earth can be corrected and killed too much. Also with killer robots from the future of the popular 'Terminator' Cameron. I hope that Miller will at least make the right version, but we’re talking about a completely different movie and the same theme.
Thomas Lockhart is a private police officer. Diligently waiting for the birth of the baby. Doing his duty, he rushes to catch a killer who leaves strange cuts on his neck overnight. And the film is delayed as much as during the life of this character, who will not rest at anything to find out the truth.
Many African-Americans are lucky, because today is a time when their opinion on discrimination of views is valued, respected, because this topic affects not only them. It turns out that this applies to ourselves. It's not even about the policemen bent their powers, but rather about us, wholly about the people. We do everything to our own detriment. We go to the end, forgetting about everything: about loved ones, about the glorious past, chasing ghosts, abandoning dreams halfway and not caring about what happens next. We leave ideas behind, naturally. It is important that they are correct.
The only thing I'm going to pick on in this movie is when Thomas (in his own way) borrows a cop badge (especially if he's his brother). After all, Boyd's hero first asked him to make one request, using his connections. How so? Perhaps he didn’t want to waste time and decided to act quickly.
I agree, the annotation of the picture, came out very confused. But believe me, from the very beginning I was sure that this story about a vampire (or vampires), especially the creator of the film Jim Mickle. And after you look at the hero in the person of Boyd Holbrook (the villain from ' Logan'); and the professional performance of the other actors, stunts, a good detective story, protracted but revealed, you will not care who she was?
We did not lazy and read an interview with director Jim Mickle, in which he stressed that the inspiration for his project was no less grandiose South Korean & #39;The Persecutor' and 'Memories of the murder'. Boyd Holbrook echoed the fact that somewhere you can see echoes 'Seven'. Well, the guys, of course, as landmarks took for themselves the mighty blocks of cinema. And there's nothing wrong with that. How else to develop, if not equal to the best. The truth of life. 'In the shadow of the moon' it turned out not bad. For a great result still lacked certain components.
First, the protagonist is not deeply written enough to throw everything and worry for him until the victorious end. He has two straight lines: one is responsible for painful memories of the past, the second - for a police case that does not give rest to the soul of the detective, as a result of which the first problem can not be solved. He's just a good cop who's had a hard time. In general, there is no necessary apricot in it, which would more intensely show the inner struggle. Or it was Boyd Holbrook who played the character so monotonously that he does not cause a subtle craving for the inconsolable suffering man.
Secondly, the beginning of the film is really invigorating, when before the presentation of the protagonist in all colors show three poor fellows, whose brains literally flowed out of all the holes. There is no time for too much chatter, you need to get down to business right away. And until the very end of the 1988 segment, everything is racing at excellent speed, causing an appetite for questions. However, then Na Hong-jin is replaced by Bong Jun-ho, and the bogging begins in the not very dense swamp. A bald criminal does not give rest to a tired and fat-swimming widower, giving out information in pieces naked, which will place the elements of the mosaic in places.
Thirdly, there is a certain inconsistency between the inner experiences of the protagonist and the general concept of time jumps. It starts with a thriller, then continues with an action movie with chases, then stick a family drama, then distract attention with science fiction. The daughter of the grief-stricken police officer is actually there, but she was added only to increase the paternal irresponsibility that was already implied. As a result, the interest that appeared in the pants gradually melts and floats away somewhere under the plinth. The whole fuss has arisen because of the test of one interesting theory, which is simple.
We decided to prove it in practice. Not to write that there was a failure, but again in the format of the series, perhaps, the project would still shoot. After all, the main actions occurred every 9 years, and the period is not at all small. The main character had to do something else besides follow the lunar cycle. In addition, it is possible to include only the theory itself from the series ' and what if.' and in the future to show a worthy heir to those Korean hits specified in the first paragraph. 5 or 6 hour episodes, we think, would be enough to fully reveal the next story about games over time.
Netflix does not abandon attempts to stake its place in the full-length sci-fi niche. But if in genre series streaming still succeeded ("Altered Carbon", "Very Strange Things", "OA", "Life of Matryoshka", especially adored by me ' Darkness'), then with a full meter the company has some continuous creative failures: clumsy "Brightness", unfantastic "Mut" and here is a fresh release on the theme-through secondary "In the shadow of the moon".
Correctly following the marketing canons, the trailer promised a flashy-intriguing action, with a whole scattering of entertaining twists. We must give it to the creators: everything promised in the commercial is present, but from the main intrigue it carries such a mothballed sweetness that throughout the story you do not let go of the déjàvuyu feeling, while action and unexpected plot twists are smeared on a two-hour timekeeping with a very thin layer. “In the shadow of the moon” turns out to be absolutely old-school unpretentious in both form and content. At the same time, the first is very intriguing and skillfully lulls cinematic vigilance, but this applies only to the first half-hour, when the action unfolds in 1988: the creators managed to brilliantly convey the oppressive nature of the night city guts, its atmosphere reminiscent of the best genre samples of the time. However, moving the plot forward in time, the film instantly loses all its flimsy charm, turning into a well-trained and unremarkable movie, its impersonality refers to second-rate sai-fi with a claim. And here we smoothly move to the heart of the story, which literally screams about its Terminator nature, interspersed with the plot of the legendary novel by Philip K. Dick. Alas, the authors could not successfully develop and supplement the main ideas and beginnings of the cult creation of James Cameron and the novel “Minority Opinion”. Already in the course of viewing, all these space-time movements, as well as the paradoxes of time travel that follow from them, are spelled out and presented so confused and not convincingly (see the theory of lunar cycles), that there is a feeling of some idiotic naivety and semantic giddyness, which guided the scriptwriters when writing the story.
Even taking into account the secondary event collisions, the creators - with a little more stimulation of imagination and due diligence - would be able to concoct a more coherent and worked out story, with their homage zeal reminding the best examples of the genre (see, for example, the beautiful "Time Patrol" with Ethan Hawk).
In general, an interesting, but passing sci-fi, lazy and duty processing the achievements of predecessors, which partially brightens up the acting efforts of Boyd Holbrook. And my favorite Michael S. Hall, the creators, alas, used idle.
This time the blue filter. What I do is figure out which filters are used in modern movies. This lowered the color and added blue. Not much to get on your nerves, but enough to understand the cheapness of the project. Instead of building a frame, post-processing. In principle, I have to say thank you, because in Russian cinema do not do this.
Since the first meeting of the hero-policeman with the suspect, I have been saying ' This is his...'. I'm not finishing the sentence. You can check to see if you will be able to determine the ‘unexpected’ & #39 from the first frame. The actors play well, because I don’t understand why the writers played the game ' make violent sexual acts with logic. In a twisted form!'
Not only is the film essentially a rehash of two of the most famous films of the early 90s about prevention (trees, it is worth waiting for a week and then they will quickly be in the recommended ones, in order to ruin all the simple intrigue with their presence), so by the end we get the paradox of inconsistency. This is beyond the native idiocy, like, what the hell is killing people in such a stupid way - necessarily an unknown poison? Why did one person react to the attack and the injection, and others did not notice at all? Why is the criminal waiting for something near the long-dead body?
At first, the film recalled 'Source code'. This is one of the few modern films that I love, which managed to observe both the sentimentality of the ending and an interesting plot. In this film, the sentimental ending hangs with a sword of Damocles: 'Go, march to it!'.
In principle, of course, I'm sorry. If you steal the plot, it would be possible to wind up more interesting concepts, to make what is happening less unambiguous (oh yes, the film begins with the fact that innocent passengers of the bus die at all), and to show, Christmas trees and sticks, a little more interaction between the main character and his wife. He devotes his life to the race after the past, and all their scenes together are one.
The writers left Hollywood... Oh, the great and terrible script crisis!
"In the Shadow of the Moon" tries to embrace the immense - a film that shows almost every genre in one bottle. The crazy combination of science fiction, detective, horror and action came out ambitious, but at times ridiculous. Of course, such motley elements of the project are fraught with great risks - some of them pay off, and some do not, especially in the framework of a police thriller moving on the wave of science fiction.
In 1988, Philadelphia cop Tom Lockhart dreamed of being a detective, a shirt-guy. One night, this simple laborer of the streets faced a mystery: several people in different parts of the city inexplicably die a terrible death – their brains literally flow from various precious bodily holes. No one can understand how these murders were carried out. Despite the unexplained nature of the crimes, the suspect is quickly found and Lockhart is sent to search for a mysterious black woman. The alleged culprit dies, Lockhart’s son-in-law (and his mentor) closes the case, but nine years later the crimes resume. Lockhart is reopening the investigation.
In the Shadow of the Moon is the creation of Jim Mickle, the director of thrillers We Are What We Are, Land of the Vampires and Mulberry Street. Mickle feels the genre and although his previous films have not gained success, In the Shadow of the Moon stands out against their background due to a good budget. In terms of film production, “In the Shadows” successfully stands out from the other creations of the director. Moreover, at the conceptual level, the film also works. The script contains several inventive ideas, each of which can be considered almost in a philosophical context. The plot itself defies anticipation, and the aforementioned “dance” with genres keeps cinema events in tone.
Combining a police procedure about an obsession (see Zodiac) with elements of science fiction may not be a bad idea, but In the Shadows lacks the material to properly qualify it. Mickle took his idea too seriously and the last hour slips into an abundance of clumsy exposure. This is a colorful example of a film that becomes less interesting with each new answer to the question of the plot. It seems that if not for the meticulous desire of the director to chew everything up, the script would only win. Because of the unambiguity, "In the shadow of the moon" depletes tension. Characters do not help either: despite the fact that the action takes place over several years, the characters do not change much ideologically (for example, the character of Michael C. Hall in each iteration tells Lockhart that he is crazy).
Sometimes the film literally can not decide on genre affiliation: there is a place and action, and science fiction, and noir, and detective and even social commentary. In skilful hands, this would be a storehouse of cinema, but, alas, a rational grain is poorly seen in the Netflix mediocre craft – there is a lack of individuality in the combination of incompatible tones lost in the darkness of the streaming service.
I didn’t hear anything about the movie, I didn’t watch trailers until I started watching the movie, so it was a pleasant surprise. In the shadow of the moon is inspired by great fiction of the 80s, where a brave detective challenges an unprecedented threat.
I didn’t expect anything, but I was immediately captured by the action of this film.
Set in 1988, the film immediately resembles police detectives and Terminator. There is a night town, a series of mysterious deaths and a daring killer who returns time after time. . .
With each time period, the story unfolds and at the end we get a very interesting and even unexpected ending.
What is the movie in the shadow of the moon?
As a good detective, you understand the ending only a few minutes before the finale.
Very interesting fiction. It seems that the idea was raised earlier, many times, but this time the angle of view was changed, forcing to solve the tangle of the plot together with the main characters.
And probably a very frightening prospect for the future. In my memory, a similar background of the plot has never been raised in similar films.
The film was watched in one breath, in the shelf of your favorite films arrived.
If you’re ready to embark on a 27-year journey, follow the incredible investigation of a series of mysterious murders. If you are a fan of 80s fiction, then the film will definitely suit you.
More than that.
“The future in the present...” is a familiar picture.
Taking into account the combined quality of everything that comes out on TV and cinemas, "In the shadow of the moon" is a sound and understandable project. I did not think that I would say this about the film rating KP = 6 (on 29.09.19), and here you do not need to be a fan of C Hall (Dexter Morgan in the show of the same name) or Holdbrook (we know him from "Narco" and roles in "Logan" and the last "Predator"), there are these tapes that are drawn simply due to intrigue.
I figured that, if you look at it, the plot echoes ' new' ' Time Patrol' and another picture 1992 of the year, it is now released in 3D. After the finale, there are no questions left, a complete, complete work, albeit without 'stars from the sky'.
Yes, the budget is small, yes, the hero of Holdbrook in 2006 had a beard glued, and probably shot the picture in some locations and one city, and it didn’t take much time, but this is Netflix, they had no projects on television since the beginning of work that would stand out, all the same.
Taking into account all ' for' - rather, I recommend that the idea is not so fresh, but in recent years there has been nothing worthwhile in this direction, and the topic of time travel has already been forgotten.
Carefully listen to what HE says, in the final mosaic will develop, and it will be interesting even to the sophisticated average viewer. This film pleasantly brought me back, similar tapes were more often released in the 90s, perhaps it became a kind of catalyst for writing all the above, ponostalgic a little.
As for the ' political' component - if you pick on it, it may be drawn, but it is war, the means to an end - the choice is always not easy.
Well, the rating ... it's certainly not 6, let's take a good look at things.
In advance + 1 to what he deserves.
The film directed by Jim Michael has not yet been released in the Russian hire, but ... appeared in free access on the Internet, and in good quality with normal voice acting. I was somehow alarmed by this, because a really cool movie, and even a fantastic thriller ala Terminator, we were supposed to be presented here as not earlier than at the end of winter. And the fears were fully justified. At first, the film captures attention, the first spectacular murders committed by a mysterious maniac, you agree, will make you stick to the monitor.
But the more you watch, the more disappointed you are, even though you want to know how such a story can end? And there she is, the end! One of the most aspirational that I have ever seen in a small-budget movie, but with a big claim to originality. And originality is not, just as there are no interesting characters, dynamic scenes with special effects, a clear, logically thought out plot, humor, worth the attention of dialogues. There's nothing in the movie, even though that's what you've been waiting for almost two hours, what if? And you get what you get. The political coloring of everything that is happening, another saving of the world in the framework of an underdeveloped scenario and a small budget, etc., finally turned me away from the film. Expecting a catch, I'm not very disappointed. That's the bottom line.
The film is not worth the attention of fans of good fiction with time jumps, it is weak, jerky, emojid, does not create a whole impression of something big, and is completely devoid of any special effects, all arrivals and departures are either not shown at all or occur uninteresting. And a bubble filled with water generally looks ridiculous. There is not a single picture that I would like to review and which caught my eye. About the actors I will say so, they did not have much to play, so I can not fully appreciate their abilities. Only Boyd Holbrook (Thomas Lockhart) stands out from all, he has the biggest role in the film. But it is not fully worked out, the relationship with the daughter somehow missed, and what he did every 9 years of waiting, is also not entirely clear, his activity manifested itself only when the mysterious murders began to occur again.
4 out of 10 for trying to implement an interesting idea.
