the Weekend - die for me “Weekend” (or, as translated by Russian localizers “Mysterious Murder”) is an Italian thriller / detective in the format of a confined space, from which there is no way out until some riddle or puzzle is solved. In our case, four friends come to their senses after a stormy party in a country house where a murder happened many years ago. In order to escape, one of them must confess that he committed the murder. But what if no one is in a hurry to indulge?
I'll go through the pluses first. I liked the fact that the story was told through two parallel lines – the past, where the last minutes of Alessandro’s life are shown, and the present. Thanks to this move, the viewer manages not to get bored in the snowy trap where our suspects are, because the atmosphere of a dark, gloomy and isolated house is depressing, and there are not so many events and dialogues between the characters. In flashbacks, we reveal the heroes, as well as possible motives for the crime.
The film looks easy, it does not stifle unnecessary details and does not drag out, and the atmosphere of cold winter and hopelessness makes you take a blanket or blanket and wrap yourself in it more comfortably.
Of the minuses, I note an obvious miscast. First, two of the four actors resemble each other like two drops of water, especially in episodes of the past. Distinguish them from each other can begin a minute on the ninetieth film. I mean, at the end. Without the function of “determine the actor by the stop frame”, which is the online cinema Kinopoisk would be very difficult to know which of them is who. One of the characters looks and behaves like a psycho, which immediately automatically strikes him off the list of suspects (well, if you watch detectives and realize that an obvious maniac can not be a maniac).
The weakest part of the film is the detective. In the course of the film, we are revealed the motives of each of the characters to kill his friend, but all these motives are so negligible that you absolutely do not believe it. Kill your friend for judging you to be a drug addict? Kill your friend for not going to university with you? And the reasons for each of the four are the same. So inconsequential that the whole movie is like, 'What idiot would kill for this?' And in general, while watching, I caught myself thinking that I somehow did not care who the killer was. The film failed in its mission to intrigue the viewer. Yes, a nice picture, a good atmosphere, but who is the killer – it doesn’t matter.
Despite the downsides of the movie, I like it. To enjoy this movie, you need to follow a simple rule – nothing from it. Do not wait for a detective in the spirit of Agatha Christie, intricate puzzles and Tarantinian dialogues, but just sit down and enjoy a light thriller that you will most likely quickly forget.
