Left hand by director Edward Dmitrick In the mid-50s, after the “Rebellion on Cain” and “Broken spear”, it became obvious that the ordinary artisan Edward Dmitrick has a real talent and can make great films. This allowed him to get good contracts.
Among such successful proposals was a movie in which Dmitrik again had to work with Humphrey Bogart - "The Left Hand of God."
In cinema, there are often films in which people who pretend to be priests do miracles. Such films include Neil Jordan’s We Are Not Angels, Henri Vernay’s The Battle of San Sebastian, and God Knows, Mr. Allison. The theme of the miracle is also raised in “Hawaii” by George Roy Hill.
In this list with complete confidence can be made and film work Dmitrik. I will not retell the story to avoid spoilers. I'll just add some of my impressions of watching.
About the script: Despite the great narrative style, the picture is obviously missing something. There is a lack of scripted culinary spices, which, I think, lost during production control.
At the same time, in the picture with excess enough refined and subtle directing. Watching this movie, I was just surprised by Dmitrik. The same Dmitrik, who many years later will shoot straight “Battle of Anzio” and “Shalako”. But that’s another story altogether.
about Bogart: Ham is doing a great job. Bogart was able to achieve a phenomenal effect - to combine the highest acting technique (worked out in many years of studio work) and outstanding acting talent. In Left Hand. Dmitrik did not particularly bother Bogart - everyone did his own thing and did it professionally.
In the end: I would not call this picture passable. Bogart in this film is very good, as is the refined direction of Dmitrik. In addition, Bogart is very good cassock.
