Melo Alain Renee After a very heavy and philosophically overloaded "Life is a novel" and "Love to death" Alain René decided to abandon his traditional ornate philosophical constructions.
It is necessary to assess the scale of self-confidence Mater, who was not afraid to take up a completely simple and banal story. And what can be difficult in the history of a short-term romance between an elderly famous man and the wife of his friend? Perhaps, on this adultery and built the whole intrigue of the film.
Actually, even the title of the film Alain Rene chose simple and unpretentious - Melo or Melodrama. However, in my opinion, it is in this simplicity that Rene succeeded.
Perhaps for the first time in all his work, he abandoned his ornate clichés. This allowed him to concentrate on the film.
And the movie worked. The first half an hour we see a simple but brilliantly filmed scene of dialogue between three people.
It is a pity that critics did not fully appreciate the merits of this painting - perhaps the most worthwhile work of René since Providence. Most likely, the halo of the great Mater did his job, and the film was treated not in accordance with its merits, but through the prism of René’s past works.
It seems to me that in this film René entered the conditional territory of François Truffaut, and showed a real class.
Rene demonstrated that he is a Master with a capital letter, who is able to abandon all previous clichés and shoot high-quality cinema in a relatively new territory for himself. Also on a small budget.
