Late or ahead? Not a bad retro-fiction, extracted from temporal layers. Of course, this film did not “thunder” in its time: it also played a role in the fact that it was not shot in a large studio, and it is unknown where the “brutal” R rating came from, and some “unmodernity”, which, I think, took place during the release of the film. Yes, according to the picture, the manner of presentation of the material, the pace is still pure 80s, with their light humor and bias more in melodramatic than in “real” drama. In the 90s, it was destined to thunder through the paintings with a different, tougher and darker pitch, but now it looks very cute and nostalgic. But in essence, the film was ahead of its time, anticipating the rise of cyberpunk cinema.
Yeah, it's cyberpunk, that's what the picture has everything for. This is also the horrific future of humanity described, where people hide like rats underground, and where life is not controlled by the government, bandits rule. This is technical modification of the human body using gadgets and interfaces to connect external devices. These are humanoid robots with human emotions. These are questions of the boundary between man and machine and the facets of humanity in the mechanism. This, finally, the combination of criminal and romantic storylines (romantic, as usual, without the android did not do). There are even hints of noir, mercilessly devoured, however, the plot quest.
The quest here is not very cunning, but the characters created by the author's imagination save the case - it is really fun to meet them on the screen. Visually, the film is also not bad, while the trips to the head of the “scheme” in something anticipate Singh’s “Cage”, and the cast pulls its extraordinary charisma Vernon Wells. As a result, a strong cyberpunk with a retrovkuss was obtained, ahead of many more “famous” ones on this path.
