Hollywood is full of pictures of piercing love stories, clarifying relationships, human stupidity and rash actions. That's not what "proximity" is about.
This story is simpler. We have four characters. It is not possible to say that one of them really loved the other. After all, between a man and a woman there can be not only love, but another feeling - intimacy.
Such stories do occur. Our whole life is spent in choice and doubt, so a person often does not know what he wants. In a relationship, you don’t know which partner is closest to you. Maybe it’s good with one person, but when the other person comes along, you start to wonder if this is the best option for you. Old feelings weaken, a new spark of sensation runs through, you reach for the unknown. When you learn something new, you miss the old. That's the movie.
I liked the movie with its unconventional nature. It's rarely done. It is interesting to see how people move from one place to another. It’s about how one situation or feeling makes you change your partner. Despite the fact that there is no special love between these people, it cannot be said that they do not care - they suffer too. Who says intimacy is less valuable than love? I will not tell the storyline, but it is simple, it is better to see.
The picture has the most excellent cast. Julia Roberts is my favorite actress. She is good at any age and in any movie. Natalie Portman once again proves that she is a diverse actress. Jude Law in his element, he is no stranger to playing a hero-lover. And Clive Owen has a charisma that I've always loved.
The film did not do without the delicious scenes that I remember. One of them is when Ellis dances for Larry at a strip club:
" You have the face of an angel.
- Thank you.
- What's your tongue like?
- Paradise
In general, I can’t praise “proximity”. I wouldn't watch it again. This is not an ordinary picture, but someone will seem boring, tedious. Someone will say that this is some kind of nonsense, this does not happen and all heroes are idiots. In general, the film is not made for a mass audience, but simply for an amateur. Therefore, the assessment is neutral and purely personal.
For some reason, I immediately decided that I would like the film. And I wasn't wrong. A very serious film in the style of a high-quality play that ridicules the vices of a person, his senseless actions, the dirty soul! All four characters are designed for 5+. You hate one, you don't understand the other, you wish the third happiness, and the fourth is an absolute mystery because of your behavior. Throughout the film, I hate Dan: he already loves Alice, lives with her, promises her a lot, he makes her fall in love with herself, she breathes him, does not want to leave him for a minute. What else does he need?! He meets Anna and at the first meeting he idolizes her, kisses her and says that she ruined his life after she rejected him. But he does not give up: he peeks at her, looks for meetings, goes to her house - why? But he won't let Alice go, he won't tell the truth, making himself nothing, because "without the truth we are just animals"! He doesn’t know what he wants, making everyone else miserable. As for Larry and Anna, it’s very hard for me to talk about them, because these characters often misled me by changing their character several times throughout the film. Larry is a mysterious villain, and Anna is a strange person who changes her views every 5 minutes.
Where is this love? I can't see her, I can't touch her, I can't feel her. I hear it, I hear the words, but I have nothing to do with your easy words.
The cast, as I wrote above, was very pleased. Not just because I’ve known them for a long time. Nope. In this film, all four showed themselves on top. Nice fit in yours. Perfectly portrayed completely different people who are united by one thing - love. I loved Natalie Portman a long time ago. I especially admired her in Black Swan. Here she played an ordinary person with ordinary tastes and views on life. The character of her character changed for the better throughout the movie - she became stronger, smarter and more beautiful soul. Naturally, she showed herself well, made me love her character. Jude Law is a good actor who has not yet won an Oscar. Played great - made to hate his hero, do not understand his actions, laugh at him. Clive Owen Natural actions, indifference to almost everything, calmness on the face in most cases. Julia Roberts is the actress of my childhood. I thought I stopped loving her, her game, but that wasn't it! Played well, a typical woman, but with an unusual character.
In conclusion, I want to say that “Closer” is a film that destroyed many stereotypes of the genre of “melodrama”, highlighted the drama, sometimes turning it into tragicomedy. The director deserved credit for his skillful work, the writers managed to write a brilliant script, for which thank you very much. A good plot, ideal images of heroes, beautiful and deep dialogues, morality – you will get by watching “Proximity”! Oh yes, I want to mention the masterful soundtrack that played at the beginning and at the end. I've been listening for weeks, but I'm still not tired! My opinion
Perhaps, “Proximity” is one of the smartest melodramas in modern cinema. Rather, even this film can be called a romantic tragedy, since all the characters clearly experience a personal tragedy.
This film is based on one of the contemporary plays, which often address issues such as family values, human relations and moral issues. This film is no exception. It examines from a very serious point of view the problems of family, love, loneliness, betrayal and betrayal.
In fact, I never fully understood any of the characters. Of course, this was originally intended, because if the hero is simple and understandable, he is not interesting. In "Proximity" the characters are multifaceted, complex, face very incomprehensible problems, go through serious trials. However, the way they pass them did not cause me any positive emotions. This is probably the first film in which I did not feel sympathy for any hero.
Overall, the film was made very professionally. At the height of everything - directing, acting, soundtrack.
I would like to say a little more about acting. The film has four main characters. These four people feature the entire film. In fact, there is no one else in the picture. They managed to do everything a hundred or even a thousand percent. Each of the actors is very suitable for his character, so they very clearly portray him.
I would especially like to highlight Natalie Portman and Jude Law. As for Gatali Portman, I consider her one of the most beautiful and talented actresses of our time, but in “Proximity” she almost surpasses herself. But what struck me most was Jude Law. I’ve always liked him, too, but to be honest, I never took him for a serious actor. But after that film, I realized that he was incredibly charismatic and talented, because that’s what Dan is.
I loved the soundtrack, especially the song at the beginning. And in the theme plays, and in the way of the film helps to tune in.
And here's what I'd like to say about proximity. This film is purely intellectual. It’s quite long and has a lot of dialogue to listen to. Because they touch on very serious topics.
I hope if you watch this movie, it will make you think a lot. This is a sign of a good movie.
What good is the truth? It's better to lie, now it's in motion.
Is love always simple and understandable? Are we always so confident in our choices that we no longer look around when we make them? Is it possible to love one person at all? Or do we need diversity over time? It is a very peculiar drama of Mike Nichols. There are so many questions in the head, and the heart is empty. You wonder if I'm just like this. Suddenly my lover cheats me by meeting someone behind my back, but, you know, without trust, we humans go crazy. Is it worth asking questions you know the answers to? Are you asking questions you don’t want to know? Really. It's actually a funny thing. We strive for it, long to know it, scandalize when it is hidden, but are not ready to hear it. It seems to us something necessary in a beautiful shiny package, tied with a festive ribbon, and necessarily sweet to the taste. But the irony is that this sweetness is sometimes unbearably bitter, and we do not care about the shiny packaging, want to run away, and run away from this long-awaited “holiday” truth. Once caught cheating, he automatically loses his trustworthiness forever. No matter how much you try to trust him, there will always be a worm of doubt everywhere. You'll remember he lied. Then why cheat, you ask? To hide the ugly truth. To protect myself. To protect others. There can be many good reasons that cannot be condemned. So, if you're a spy, you won't tell the enemy who you really are. But if we're talking about a relationship between a man and a woman, do we need a lie? Through trial and error, we understand what is not necessary. Sooner or later it is woven into a web from which it is impossible to get out.
I slept with a prostitute in New York.
- Why did you tell me?
- I don't want to lie to you.
-Why not?
Because I love Larry and Anna.
It hurts, but it’s fair, because we love the not created ideal image of a person with all his shortcomings, including betrayal. It sounds crazy, I don’t argue, but with every action a person changes. With each breath, it becomes different, not something you once loved. So the question is, can you accept that other person? Will you be able to love him?
A multi-layered film, ambiguous. I think he'll give everyone a reason. But the truth is that all human relationships are extremely intricate and nebulous, and the most difficult and important thing is not to lose yourself in this whirlpool, not to change yourself and turn into something that you once despised or hated.
The characters are quite controversial, as is the whole film. Anna is a very reserved, prestigious photographer who clearly distinguishes work and art, clients and strangers. But over the course of the film, she becomes more impetuous, inconsistent, contradictory. But what commands respect is that she fights for her happiness, in her own way, but struggles. Although at times she seems tired, a lonely woman, too often frustrated and depressed. Dan is a romantic, gentle, but failed writer. We used to call these men mattresses and losers, weeping in the pillow until we see it. But at the same time he has a certain charm, even sublimity, boyish stubbornness and perseverance. Women love with their ears. Larry, on the contrary, is a tough, determined, audacious man. Behind a wall like a stone wall, you're afraid of that wall. You never know what to expect in the next moment. He is a true male, but the male is greedy, cruel, merciless. In a sense, the best option is if you know how to pacify it. Or if you really do. And Alice is a young American who escaped from her previous lover to England. Fragile, delicate flower, exuding the aroma of mystery, but at the same time cunning, daring, even brazen girl. She does not set high goals, content with small peaks, but desperately craves love and understanding. Of the actors, I would not single out anyone, too different roles, although the men seemed to me overly emotional and even hysterical, but the performance was flawless. All I can say is that all other things being equal, Anna (Julia Roberts) and Dan (Jude Law) are closer to me. They have a more calm, measured love, but it loses its brilliance. However, frankly, I don’t think any of the four heroes liked it, but rather played love by rearranging their own pieces on the chessboard. But at the same time, who knows what the quirks of this life are. Maybe someday we will find ourselves in a similar situation.
In fact, this is only one of the many millions that are encountered in real life.
I wanted to see the movie “Proximity” a long time ago. Mostly because of Natalie Portman, plus I read a lot of positive reviews for this movie. So I downloaded it and looked at it. I liked the movie. And I will soon count my review as positive. The film has a cute plot and a great acting. But it seems to me that he is unnecessarily confused in some places. And even at the beginning of watching the film, I could not understand much what was happening, but then I understood and watched the film with pleasure and sincerely empathizing with the characters. But of course, Natalie Portman played a huge role in my sympathy for the film. I recently admired her very much as an actress and in this film she pleasantly surprised me.
So the focus is on the underperforming writer Dan. His talent is only enough for obituaries in the newspaper. One day he meets a charming and attractive stripper Alice. They instantly fall in love with each other. But later he meets fashion photographer Anna. His passion for Alice fades and he falls in love with Anna. He's suffering and wants to be with her. And one day, unwittingly, he introduces her to a doctor named Larry. And since then, between these four people begins a love quadrangle from which it is not so easy to get out. Interesting.
How can you not be satisfied with such actors acting? But we'll mark everyone in turn. Natalie Portman. With every movie I see, I admire this actress more and more. Of course, in this role it was not customary to see her. But I think she did a great job with her. Jude Law. I appreciated his talent for a long time. In this role, he gave everything. I am very happy with him, or rather with his game. Julia Roberts. She has been a great actress for a long time. Of course, this film was no exception. And the scene of the argument between her character and the hero Clive Owen, I generally admired. And speaking of Clive Owen. I think he played the role the best. I wasn’t very interested in him, but in this role he really impressed me. And I think if he had been given an Oscar, he would have been fully deserved.
Bottom line: Closeness is a great drama that reflects feelings and how they can change quickly. This movie is about love, about life. I still recommend watching the movie. Enjoy your visit.
