One day in the life of a family. Paul, due to depression, suddenly moves to his father’s apartment, where his worried father himself and his brother, who is completely untroubled, but still fervently loving him, are groping over him in different ways.
Very French cinema. Paris, the Eiffel Tower, flashing in any convenient case, narrow streets, boys with stylish scarves and disheveled curly hair, household nudity as if in between, refined carelessness, songs in French and much more, so inherent in this category of cinema.
I can’t say that I’m a fan of French cinema, but I enjoy watching some films that are more suitable for the general public. Art house isn't my thing. Although, to be honest, I don’t know much about it, and I’m not sure if this picture can be called an art house. But I didn't like it anyway. I didn’t like the style of the story. More precisely, styles, because there were a lot of them in the film. Then from the first person, then from the third, then some theatrical inserts against the background of some completely incomprehensible speeches, then leaps in time ... By the way, because of them, it was difficult for me at the very beginning to understand what exactly happened in the film.
In general, the film is like a mosaic, as a collection of separate (and very different in style) clips connected by one common idea. I don’t understand that and I don’t like it.
The story itself looks weak and simple because of all this. It seemed to me that the story lacked depth, lacked tear, emotions.
But the acting was very happy. The actors are well-chosen and well-assembled, they played great too. Somewhere in the reviews I saw the phrase “the best slap in the history of cinema”, and I probably agree. If not the best, it's definitely one of them. I have even revisited this point several times. Great game.
Fans of French cinema might like it. Not really.
