The series is woven from stories having derivatives from other works of the creepy genre. We can say that the plot is a kaleidoscope of events that occur with the main characters when they are distracted from their main (canonical) storyline. Thanks to the acting power of the colossos of cinema: Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Harry Treadaway, the series has a very interesting aesthetic value.
I fell in love with the series from the first minutes, he did not let me go and looked forward to watching even before the final series.
The style of Victorian England in movies and books is particularly close to me. This is the time of the first great discoveries and explorations. Public interest in sciences and new technologies is growing, which cast doubt on the tenets of religion. A vast, unexplored world is overgrown with new hoaxes and fantasies. The creators of the series twisted a serious storyline and collected all possible fairy tales. Now, it immediately becomes clear that not all fairy tales are equally cute and kind. Medieval fairy tales are still dark, it just managed to show in the series.
In these Boulevard horrors collected all the classics of Gothic England of the late 19th century: Victor Frankenstein and his creations, the wolf-werewolf, the bride of the devil, vampires, witches, Jekyll and Hyde, Dorian Gray ... And most importantly, how beautiful they are, what makeup, costumes. I admired each time, from series to series.
They are all familiar to us, these heroes of fantastic works. Let different authors, but united by one era. The creators of the series mixed all this in an incredible cocktail, complemented and developed familiar stories. You could tell them your way. What I liked was that there were no positive or negative characters. Each of them is bright, charismatic. Somewhere charming, some ugly, each with a broken and with his own pain. Some are disgusted from the beginning, but then you penetrate and begin to empathize.
Beauty and pain are the main theme of the series. Everyone goes through their pain, like all of us. Getting in all parameters, design, beauty of the frame, acting, plot, music and an impressive ending. Amazing series, I recommend to everyone who is in love with fairy tales and likes to tickle their nerves.
The genre of tabloid horrors recently was at the peak of its popularity, and even now attention to it does not fade. Take at least the undying saga of American Horror Story, coming out season after season and steadily finding its viewer. Simply because there are so many things a person can theoretically fear.
With "Scary Tales," or "Pinny Horrors," or "Darkly Horrors," the story is different. The series, for all its merits, lasted only three seasons, but this is the case when more was not necessary - everything ended quite logically and even beautifully.
The focus of the story is the dark secrets of Victorian London, the atmosphere of which is perfectly recreated by the efforts of decorators and costume artists. In terms of the oppressive atmosphere, the series can be compared to “Alienist”. The only difference is that there were monsters there were people, and here - otherworldly creatures.
Without exaggeration, the beauty Eva Green shines in the main female role. In principle, she is very much in the role of gloomy maidens with a tormented soul and skeletons hidden in the closet, but the role of Vanessa Ives in this series is in my opinion one of the best.
A strong psychic, Vanessa helps Lord Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) investigate the disappearance of his daughter Mina. This eccentric duo is joined by brutal cowboy Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett).
With all due respect to the main characters, I loved and remembered Dr. Frankenstein’s arch and his creations much more. It develops in parallel, only occasionally intersecting with the main. The good doctor creates his monster and then rejects him because he comes out ugly and, as it seems at first, evil. The second attempt was much more successful (though it did not last long). Caliban (Rory Kinner) first wants revenge on his creator, and then finds his own way. And the name itself takes a symbolic, John Clare, "Bright."
A different story with Dorian Gray. For all the angelic appearance of actor Reeve Carney, this is a rotten character. And even if you have the illusion that it will improve, do not even dream. It's all right in the canon.
In fact, the stories of many characters end sadly. And not because the writers are filthy, but simply otherwise it is impossible. Well, people with such a fate can not “live happily ever after”, life is not so arranged. If you are ready for this, I recommend it.
Cool horror stories, united by a single plot about a beautiful witch and absorbed all known legends and fairy tales. Eva Green here shines in all its dark beauty, old man Timothy Dalton is still charming, as if years do not rule over him, and in general the entire cast is at a high level. Excellent special effects, makeup, costumes, dark, mystical, sinister atmosphere - what else does a horror lover need?
If you have read Portrait of Dorian Gray and generally love English literature and the aesthetics of old London, then the series is more likely to enjoy.
Adds aesthetics and the image of Eva Green, although her appearance is specific: thin graceful, with a demonic look and high cheekbones.
The plot of the series maneuvers in different planes: sleep and reality, good and evil, beauty and ugliness, psychotherapy and mysticism, strength and weakness. There is a lot to think about, but I was most fascinated by the visual part: ancient English life, Victorian clothes, industrial landscapes of London.
I was amazed by the decoration of the palace of Dorian Gray. Not a house, but a museum of painting.
I remember the moment with the dance of Dorian and Lilly, when the bloody plume of her dress drew patterns on the parquet.
All these scenes are seasoned with poetry, various shades of feelings and operatic music.
There is a lot of blood in the series. But it's not disgusting. For some reason, Dracula was added to other famous characters, but it seems superfluous to me. Vampire themes are sucked out of the finger, in my opinion.
I enjoyed watching all the series. Now I think how else I can immerse myself in the mood that creates the series.
Such exquisite mysticism is not found anywhere.
The series begins with vampire hunters... not those gallant and human vampires from Twilight movies, but the real wild, bloodthirsty, bloodsucking, hungry animals - ghouls. Then the storyline spills over to the Devil himself and the main character obsessed with him, over whom an exorcism is performed (in nomine patri patri Spiritus Sancti... or what?) While the characters solve the problem of how to rescue the main character’s sister from the other world of Shadows, no one else, and Dr. Frankenstein himself revives his first corpse with a lightning discharge ... which, by the way, is not at all friendly and threatens the doctor. I remember reading the story of Frankenstein in the original language as a child in school, and the plot is remotely similar (unlike films like Victor Frankenstein or I'm Frankenstein). The whole series permeates the gloomy biblical themes, because none other than Lucifer himself moves into the main character, choosing her as his “bride”. I know that many people do not like biblical motives, exorcism of demons, demons, demons, many demons (where in modern horror films without them), so not everyone will like the series. By the way, demons are very human, I would even say “fairytale”, painted on the body with pentograms and stars (seriously? well... a fairy tale).
Despite the well-revealed atmosphere of eerie and gloomy London of the 19th century, the city still seems... unnatural and “licked”. Dorian Gray always receives guests in the same room with portraits, not so spacious for a waltz (he has a huge mansion, and we show one room). Vampires are not scary, especially demons. Although, perhaps, the children watching this series will be scared (again, not the fact ... I, as a child raised on such films as “Omen” and “Pet Cemetery”, certainly would not be afraid). Although, this series is not recommended for imho children, since it is replete with frank scenes of sex, and not only traditional, but also men with a man and even a transvestite (this was not even in Game of Thrones and Spartacus).
The second season was even more interesting than the first. Vampires reach a new level, and instead of scattered ghouls, we see an organized vampire group led by Lady Vampire. Dr. Frankenstein also takes a new step in his experiments, and creates a “living corpse” of a sexy woman who does not look like a “walking dead person.” And his first experiment - a revived man with a bright inferiority complex, does not look so ugly ... no matter how much this character says about it, trying to inspire this idea to the viewer.. well, sorry, a couple of scars on the side of the powdered face is such a ugliness? seriously? recalled the freaks from "Turn the wrong way" or at least the mutant girl from "Hemlock Grove". Not really. Although, given the title of the series, you can blame it on the fact that it is like a fairy tale, which means that everything is not real.
In the second season, a werewolf is discovered, and not just a werewolf, but a moralist werewolf, all so correct, who hangs out with the main character of an obsessed Satan and tries to explain to her how bad it is to kill people, even scum. Well, it wasn't with the vampire that our wolf hung out, at least some departure from the clichés. By the way, the werewolf is not a good dog like in Hemlock Grove, but a brutal hairy, sharp-toothed man like in the movie The Wolf (with Jack Nicholson in the lead role).
The series did not cause me enthusiasm, as well as disgust. A medium-sized sleek series, under beer and chips will do.
Mystical thriller, Victorian England, dark tales... That sounds intriguing, yes. But it was not very interesting to watch, attention dissipated, and a lot of strange and unnecessary scenes seemed to exist only to fill the airtime.
The thriller was not, as well as dark tales. The plot was built around Mina, the girlfriend of the main character, whom she betrayed and received punishment in the form of possession. It was assumed that this storyline will be key, and the relationship of friends will somehow be revealed, explained, but this line was completely merged, obsession became the main focus.
Greene is the same actress in every movie, but in this series was her role, her type. Dalton's an old-school guy, and that's it. The rest looked, if not very convincing, then miserable. Dracula is never Dracula and looks like a mole, Dorian Gray played a faceless and angular type, the character is as far from the original as Dracula, the Beast of Frankenstein resembled a musician from ' Rammstein' retired, decided suddenly to go to the Goths. Why take literary heroes and make them what you want? Apparently, to hide behind big names, since the canonicity there is zero.
Although the plot of the first season was leaked, there was at least some line, I’m talking about obsession. And after episode 8, it was necessary to put an end, but greed and greed, as you know, know no boundaries, and the series with a completely inappropriate title ' Scary Tales' was stretched for another two seasons, in which there was nothing but boredom. It is enough to watch the last episode to find out how primitive and predictable this movie ended. Spend your time watching all this 'masterpiece' don't.
When I looked, I realized that I am under such an impression that if I do not share my impression, I will not be able to discuss this masterpiece with someone, I will simply tear up.
So 'Penny Dreadful', in our box office the name is translated as 'Scary tales' but the original title gives the key to perception, and the translation eats all the meaning. ' Boulevard horrors' (or rather) - ' the name of the TV show refers to the popular in Britain in the 19th century variety of cheap thin. literature, exploiting criminal and mystical themes', i.e., it seems to prepare for easy viewing another mishmash of ghouls and ghouls. The genre that they love to rivet so much now, without any logic and semantic load (so forgive the poor Americans, because due to the youth of their nation, they have no mythology at all, hence such confusion), a kind of mutated hybrid of literary and mythological monsters in the comic book universe. Famous directors shoot such films as ' Lincoln, the Vampire Hunter', ' Hansel and Grettel - Witch Hunters', ' League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'... etc... no sur, no parody, everything is very serious and for a lot of money.
So I began to look with great skepticism and... could not come off.
Possessed, witches, living dead and their creators, werewolves and just murderers, kind of the same mishmash, not. Here everything coexists very harmoniously, the boundaries of black and white, good and evil are erased and gradually you realize that all this evil, only an allegory of our inner demons, is not even so, it is a personification of the human dark side. We all face a kind of dualism within ourselves. Someone is trying to fight his dark essence, someone is trying to come to terms. Life goes by in this struggle. And that's the point of the painting. We empathize with the heroes, in search of this balance, but there are no bad and good here, accordingly, we cannot sympathize with them either. They are strong, intelligent, but there is darkness within everyone. A monster and a man are one. The cursed mother of Darkness, a witch who was converted to serve Satan in infancy, a hunter who despised all the rules of life in order to satisfy his aspirations and desires, a doctor guided by his nature and talent, who corrected the laws of the Universe and played God, a lover who sold his soul for eternal life and youth, but lost his taste for what he sold for. It raises philosophical questions that we always ask ourselves. What is the meaning of life, is it necessary to fight your dark side, if then you cease to be yourself, where is the line that should not be crossed? . .
The visual series attracts concentrated Decadan aesthetics, patterns brought to genius. If the Thames, then lead clouds pressing on metal structures, if an ascetic cross on a bare wall, spiders crawl along it, a cup of English porcelain filled to the brim with thick burgundy blood, if the flap of a translucent wing of bats, then towards dawn. In general, I have not seen such high-quality camera work for a long time, and especially in the series.
The pleiad of actors is impressive. I have always thought of Eva Greene as an actress of one role, the role of a witch, here is no exception. But what is the scope of the game, the demonic mad look, the thin camp with a break in the moment of satanic exaltation. No wonder she became the new favorite of Tim Burton. Who is a woman, if not the Goddess of Chaos?
Timothy Dalton once again did not disappoint with his classical school, the ability to play, but not to overplay, which is appropriate everywhere, as well as natural masculinity and become.
Energetic Josh Hartnett, with his characteristic enthusiasm in the eyes and masculinity of behavior.
Good play by Rory Kinner, the creation of Frankenstein. I must say that at first this animated, tedious slob with an eternally suffering expression of the face was somewhat annoying. But then, since the storyline of this character was clearly spelled out, I was able to understand how wrong I was. Another creation dr. Frankenstein, the failed bride who made her choice for freedom, is a biblical reference. The face of the actress is very memorable, remembered her in the film ' Secret diary of a call girl'. The game is also similar, sensual, deliberately vulgar, feminine-sentimental, but cruel.
Who is not impressed, for various reasons:
Ironically, heroes, in the primary sources, who were my favorites.
The actor who played Dorian Gray. Handsome, handsome, boy. Such a vision, due to the general depravity of the character, is quite the case, if not for one' but'. Due to its androgyny, completely primitive, not multifaceted ... in the plane of his picture. And the picturesque scene of sodomy in general made squeamishly put on rewind.
Dracula, indeed, since the beginning of the film, his presence is invisibly felt, but when he appears on the stage, either there was not enough time, or the director freaked out, but he was openly leaked. In the end, like the actor picked up charismatic, but time he was not given absolutely.
In general, in conclusion, I want to say that on the one hand, I realized that somewhere I was cheated with a sequel, on the other, no ending would satisfy me, because I became dependent on this series. And completion is quite logical and leads to acceptance, reconciliation and blessing.
I apologize for the stream of consciousness, but this series is really worth watching, thinking and discussing.
I’ve heard about this series for a long time, but I never got my hands on it. But now, quarantine helped, and I couldn't deny myself the pleasure of enjoying the image of Eva Greene in a mystery series.
[minor spoilers below]
I must say that the first couple of episodes I was still waiting and hoping, but all in vain. In the series, it is difficult to highlight the pros, but cutting flaws and hit the eyes.
The first thing you notice is the lack of motivation. It seems that the actions of the heroes were prescribed by rotating the roulette of basic templates - the characters instantly and forever fall in love with each other, the souls of half-acquainted people occupy a third of the timekeeping.
The second is dialogue. Oh, my God, they're so empty and pathetic. Heroes report a trip to the bathroom with the most vivid epithets and metaphors that can only be found in the pages of Shakespeare, Wald, Dante and all the brethren. And so it is always and every action.
The third is heroes. Not only were cult personalities such as Dr. Foankenstein, Dorian Gray, Abraham van Helsing turned into stupid dummies, but they were also introduced so many that in one series you can get lost in the storylines, half of which does not affect the plot (why it was so much time to devote to a sick prostitute, Frankenstein monster, Dorian Gray, what the brutal murders were to at the beginning of the film) - the entire caste of the first season could be enough for all three, if they were correctly revealed. It seems that the creators were afraid to appear boring, and therefore added such a meaningless palette of characters.
Finally, horror tricks - and then a complete failure. The trick that really frightened the Exorcist, namely the knowledge of the obsessed with all the secret aspects of the biography of the people around her, is applied here to every (!) hero. And, often, the information that the obsessive reports has already been shown earlier in the form of boring, long flashbacks. The rest of the monsters are almost nonexistent.
In general, the creators for some reason were so sure that their series would teach the sequel that the first season was made as a rather long and slow introduction. I don’t know if I’ll watch the rest of the seasons, but the first one left a very negative impression.
I am only discovering a world of horror, and it was this series that brought into the atmosphere I was looking for: not the clichéd freaks - victims of genetic or radiation modification, sinking to a nasty bottom, but the very essence of horror - the man himself.
I find more and more often that, unlike the creatures created by man’s irrepressible imagination, man himself is a great nightmare and a great grace. All these monsters that burst from the screen into our consciousness are already endowed with all the abomination of their creator. But even they, with their cruelty, are sometimes more humane and decent than people. The whole horror of human nature lies in the will, the freedom to choose between good and evil, while creatures are knowingly on the side of evil and are deprived of this right. And yet, it is man who surpasses even the most cruel monster in the sophisticated cruelty.
This idea can be clearly seen in the series: in Sir Malcom - who destroyed his family and Vanessa's family, in Victor - playing for his own ambitions in God, in Ethan, a professor, and other heroes not associated with the other world. The greatest cruelty is within us, not in the dark. We are the monsters, not the ones we created.
And the paradox of the entire trilogy, if you can call it so, is that the most human was the monster created by Dr. Frankenstein, John Clair. His desire for the beautiful, for the true for the bright makes him the striking opposite of all those heroes who fight darkness for this light. And he remains faithful to this light to the very end, accompanying one way or another, Miss Ives.
This is a great series, with an interesting plot, a rather deep meaning, a magnificent atmosphere and a beautiful cast. It is definitely worth watching.
A dark gothic cocktail with a Victorian aftertaste.
When Gothic blood exceeds all permissible limits, I turn to a proven old friend - the British TV series Penny Dreadful. There are different versions of the translation of the name, personally to my liking - "Scary tales".
It’s an amazingly atmospheric movie and even with some, I would say, portal properties.
Its creators gave us the world of Victorian England, in which they delightfully combined the long-become classic stories of Count Dracula and Dorian Gray, Dr. Frankenstein with his creation, Dr. Jekyll, as well as vampires, werewolves, witches, secret laboratories with brilliant scientists, dangerous mysteries of history and mystical revelations.
The extraordinary work of screenwriters, the magical hands of artists and decorators, the luxurious splendor of the work of costumers and, of course, the fascinatingly talented creation of musicians and composers.
Every thoughtful and skillfully shot shot, every note of the perfect musical accompaniment of this truly lovingly created action, can literally be savored, like exquisite wine.
All the actors were simply impeccable in their roles, and yet the series without exaggeration can be called a benefit of the magnificent and charming Eva Green. At the limit and even beyond human possibilities, she was able to reveal to us the world of the sensations of the MEDIUM, when reality is blurred in a shaky mirage, intersecting with the otherworldly, when the line between normality and madness is blurred, and when revelation dangerously approaches possession. And no one in the whole world can answer: the ability of a medium is a great gift or a cruel curse.
When the old clock strikes midnight, turn off the lights throughout the house, and be alone with the big screen, this magical window into the world of thrilling adventures and mysterious stories of Scary Tales.
Before you have time to look back, how you feel the irregularities of the paving stones under the soles of your shoes, here from the Thames brought the smell of dampness and distant cries of gulls and port handlers ... the fog swirls in the ghostly light of gas lamps in the alleys of old London and the harsh policeman tightened the baton, headed in your direction. This means that you have succeeded.
“Scary tales” or “How to catch all the villains of the Victorian era?”
So, Victorian, foggy London, red, brick factories, as well as a bunch of folklore monsters and a squad of thugs saving the city from the impending darkness.
Sounds promising. From the very beginning, an intrigue appears, which, by the way, no one will reveal to us clearly, and it is scary and interesting, so to speak, tabloid horrors in the best traditions.
But all this is counterbalanced by the monotony and predictability of the plot, the long disclosure of heroes whose actions sometimes defy logic.
Many of us will meet in this series with long-loved antagonists.
For example, Dorian Gray. The character of Reeve Carney (Dorian Gray) appears to us as a hero who has no intrigue.
We are offered to see how deep in himself he is looking for what he has long sold to the devil for his youth and immortality, resigned to this he is given to rampant orgies following his vices.
The intersection of the plot lines of heroes and villains in the neutral time of the series generally looks absurd and unnecessary, as well as a lot of meaningless dialogue. Instead of flashbacks, the memories of heroes are often delayed for a whole series.
The main character (Eva Green) is certainly a decoration of the series and perfectly shows her character and his inner struggle with himself.
But, unfortunately, this is not enough to create some basis for the current storyline. There is an intrigue of the plot as such, there is no truly terrible component of the film, all the same it is a folklore horror.
Expectation exceeds reality, so many will feel the series suspended in the air. In any case, the play of the actors and the cast itself is bohemian, which makes you not pass by the Boulevard horrors.

Scary Tales, aka Penny Horrors, Cheap Horrors or Penny Dreadful, is an American-British horror-thriller and fantasy television series created for Showtime. The founder and writer of the project was John Logan, who also acted as a producer with Sam Mendes. The name of the TV show refers to the popular in Britain in the 19th century variety of cheap fiction, exploiting criminal and mystical themes. The series features various characters of folk horrors: vampires, werewolves, witches, the living dead. This is just the beginning...
I love all these legends and fairy tales, these characters and how the writers managed to reduce all this into a logical, high-quality watchful feast, where each hero is allowed to reveal himself in one way or another. The plot of the first season of the series takes place in Victorian England. The celebrated traveler Lord Malcolm Murray secretly gathers people of special talents to help find his daughter Mina, kidnapped by the sinister Master. In this eccentric team "the most mysterious girl of London" Miss Vanessa Ives, who is a very strong psychic, American Ethan Chandler, who has proven himself as a skilled shooter, and a young genius of medicine, anatomist Victor Frankenstein. Each of the heroes has their own terrible secrets, but the most terrible is the evil that they meet in the slums and corners of London.
It's tough and business-as-usual. In an impressive and demanding cultural context, the plot of the series moves slowly, gradually revealing what demons each of the key characters is fighting. Everyone pursues their own goals, in which all this will result no one knows. Who else appears here from folklore dishonesty and will appear in future seasons, I will keep silent, let him be an intrigue. It is a special pleasure to watch everyone, because everything is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. Director and screenwriter: Logan tells a fascinating and sometimes chilling story. Bayona and the entire directorial staff do not deny themselves an insanely stylish demonstration of the horrors of Victorian London, inhabited by monsters of all varieties, among which, of course, a person stands out.
The most “delicious” decoration of this series, of course, is Eva Green. She is simply incredible in the image of the beautiful fortune teller Vanessa, with a difficult fate. The company she is brave actors, in the person of Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Harry Treadaway, Reeva Carney.
Season 2 promises to be very interesting.
Season 2 - 10 episodes.
My scorpion.
Season 2 reveals new heroes and the sinister dark secret of Vanessa Ives, her role is greatly increased. All the main characters will once again unite in the fight against evil, which seeks to finally consume Albion with its dark inhabitants.
This season is much cooler and more interesting than the first, first because of the main antagonists and their henchmen. Each series catches and surprises, I just couldn’t stop and watched the whole season in a volley.
The end of Episode 2, Episode 3 and beyond... all these flashbacks and plot plot logically lead to the final battle between good and evil. Helen McCrory (as Madame Cali) is just a fucking high witch who will stop at nothing to seize power and get Vanessa’s much-loved soul for the Master. Well, about the amount of blood, meat, mysticism and interesting characters - here everything is an order of magnitude higher, the scriptwriters tried their best.
And yet Victor Frankenstein, realizing the full responsibility of the creator for his creation, asks a rhetorical, but key question for the religious and mystical component of the series, a question that gnaws, perhaps, most of the heroes of this story: “How to escape from your nightmares?”
What will happen in Season 3?
Season 3 - 9 episodes.
Darkness is coming...
In the 3rd final season, we are finally waiting for the denouement and the long-awaited meeting with the next Master.
There is a full disclosure of the characters, the intrigue is trying to grow with each series, but still weakly, honestly. I was expecting an epic ending after a great season 2, but I guess I overstated my expectations a little bit. Everything in principle ended logically, many characters “humanized”, found their home and looked their fears in the face. Many had a comprehension, the epiphany of their nightmare deeds, which only reduced the bloody tone of the narrative of the series.
The finale is insanely melodramatic, you do not expect to see it here, but it still catches something. Eva Green – throughout all three seasons showed the maximum range of her acting skills, and you are surprised that there is no nomination (except for the Globe 2016) and certainly victory for this excellent serial role. But she really worthy of displaying all the throwing and torment of Miss Ives.
As a result, despite its fabulousness, the series came out very lifelike and ruthlessly realistic, filled with atmospheric musical accompaniment from the composer Abel Kozhenevski. I would recommend watching.
At the moment, I watched two seasons of the series "Scary tales", which can be said, the series is not a masterpiece, but it is quite good for connoisseurs of the genre.
Victorian era, the streets roam Jack the Ripper, hiding in the corners of the monster Frankenstein, vampires, witches, Dorian Gray, ghouls. Everything was mixed up in the house of Oblonsky. But that mess looks organic in the movie, except for Dorian Gray. He has his own separate story, not particularly intersecting with the main characters. Maybe something will happen in the third season – we’ll see.
Eva Green, the performer of one of the main roles in the series. Eva is very good images of the Victorian era - aristocratic pale face, sharp look, hairstyles of the XlX century.
Timothy Dalton as always at the top in any image. This is the old English acting school. Very convincing.
Of course, not very good to show for Russia scenes with homosexuals. But if you want to be patient, there are not very many of them.

When you start watching “Boulevard horrors” you do not need to wait for the actual “horrors”. The series is absolutely not frightening, and does not try. It is rather a dark fairy tale, uniting cult characters under the cover of Victorian London. Here you and Victor Frankenstein with his creatures, and Dorian Gray, and Dracula, and vampires, werewolves, witches ... In general, monsters for every taste.
But Vanessa Ives runs the ball. Her image brilliantly embodied on the screen Eva Green. She's the highlight of the show. The other characters are also very interesting, and the cast is impressive. Here you and Timothy Dalton as a rich aristocrat, traveler Sir Malcom, and George Hartnett as a daring American Ethan Chandler. Billy Piper personally fascinated me. I didn’t expect her character Bronnah Croft to elicit such conflicting emotions from disgust to understanding and empathy. However, in this series, all the characters are perfectly played and spelled out. Even iconic images such as Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and his creation are played in new ways. Ironically, there is more depth and tragedy. This is especially true of the Frankenstein monster played by Rory Kinnear. All the characters interact with each other, their storylines intertwine, and gradually the secrets of each are revealed to the viewer. There's plenty of secrets. Each hero is shrouded in mystery and has its own complicated history. Each hero is, in fact, a monster, rejected by society and bearing its own curse. Interesting and intriguing characters became one of the main advantages of the series for me.
Another advantage is the atmosphere. It captures from the first frames and transports you to the world of mysticism. This atmosphere is undoubtedly gloomy, viscous, but alluring. Dirty streets of London, soot-covered industrial quarters, majestic and frightening Gothic buildings, ballrooms, illuminated by dim light of candles and fog - the eternal companion of the city. Despite the fact that almost all the events of “Bulvar horrors” occur in the dark, the visual component is impressive. Add to that beautiful, sublime, sad music. And the charming atmosphere of the series is ready.
An important part of “Bulvar Horrors” is dialogue. Heroes talk a lot about life and death, about God and the Devil, about their place in this sinful world, refer to classical authors, quote philosophers, trying to answer the eternal questions of mankind. Filled with poetic allusions, the speeches of the characters perfectly fit into the Gothic atmosphere of the series. A slow, melancholy narrative allows you to enjoy every moment. But where do you ask the horrors? I already wrote above that the series is not particularly scary, but it can shock. Blood, dirt, corpses, in general, there are enough nasty scenes. And, of course, a lot of candid bed scenes. The authors skillfully struck a balance between disgusting and beautiful, slow and shocking. Therefore, the series is really interesting to watch: the characters are intriguing, the atmosphere is addictive, and the plot sagging in places is saved by eerie, frightening scenes.
And in the end, to be objective, a few words about the shortcomings. I watched all three seasons of Boulevard Horrors in one breath. But after watching, I realized that the main line of the story of the series is too linear and predictable. In each season, it is a struggle between conditional good and evil. And this is not that bad, just the authors paid more attention to revealing the characters, creating an atmosphere, a visual component, but they were not enough to create a twisted plot. In addition, against the background of well-written, multifaceted main characters, conditional evil looks flat. Vampires, witches, are unlikely to surprise the viewer. We’ve seen thousands of variations of these characters in the movies, and Boulevard Horrors has failed to bring anything new to these images. Although what we have is not bad, but it does not reach perfection.
In the end: a good series with interesting characters and a beautiful atmosphere. I recommend it to lovers of mysticism.
The series takes place in Victorian London, shown from its darkest side: noisy markets, dirty pavements, dark alleyways and rough, burdened by the hardships of everyday life people who live in the middle of it all. But there is something attractive about this city, something that makes people want to go there and stay there forever. Penny Dreadful is a story about how bizarrely the fates of people ... and those who once were can intertwine.
Dorian Gray, Dr. Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper and other famous characters from books and urban legends walk the same streets of London, go to the same performances and even make acquaintances with each other, not realizing how terrible secrets each of them keeps.
The series is perfectly shot, has a solid cast and pleasantly surprises the viewer with original interpretations of seemingly well-known plots.
It's too easy to be a monster!
Let's try to be human.
(Episode 8, Season 3)
Fearful stories
Let me tell you about all three seasons!
I started watching the show with my eyes wide open. Expectations were big (the topic is still interesting, zombie - the legendary classic monsters in one series). I liked the first season. Not much, but it was really great. At the very beginning we were introduced to the main characters, the atmosphere is chic, the ending was intrigued. Here's the next thing.
The second season was given to the witches (well, more than half). I have nothing against this theme, but with each new series, it only became boring, the characters stomped around. Heroes are sitting in a house talking about witches. Several episodes pass, the characters are again sitting in the house, talking about witches. I understand that this is Gothic with a bias towards drama, and not a blockbuster in the style of Van Helsing.
Still, longing began to gain terrible momentum, a huge number of stretched scenes and unnecessary chatter. The end of the second season seemed like a puff. Wrapped up and dramatized so much that then everything will go down in a few minutes, there are no words. A spoonful of honey! The series about the old witch is very powerful (the actress is cool, to tears), but this is one series out of ten, it will not be enough.
The third season is a complete disappointment. They leaked a lot of heroes. Most of all, it is a shame for Vanessa (it was impossible to do this, a claim to the writers, not to Eva Green). Why was Dr. Jekyll (Mr. Hyde) needed? No, seriously, explain. It’s stupid for a pile, there will be no other excuses for the creators.
A separate paragraph about Dracula. I didn’t watch the cast, so I try not to watch the movie or the TV series. When Dracula appeared (and you expect him more than the other heroes, I did not even expect Wolf Man with Dorian Gray), my eyebrows frowned. Why did this actor play Dracula? There's no Dracula here, just a nice guy. Dracula is Bela Lugosi! We missed the bloodsucker.
Who was sympathetic? If you have Frankenstein (the monster) in your movie, he will always be the saddest character. Thank you so much for Frank. That's where it all came together. The monster is pathetic. The actor played for five. Purely outwardly - controversial, but in the context of this series, it looked good. The wolf is average. Grey's fine. Frank's bride is a rude actress (subjectively).
Timothy - I'm glad you're still playing. Old age suits you, as does Donald Sutherland. The worst part is a lot of nudity. All right, channel allows. But why is it that when Greene has sex, you hide her breasts? Or Bride Frank's breasts? Guys, this is all nonsense, they show sex between two men, they show the male genitals on the whole screen and could not persuade Greene to undress. Either undress everyone or forget about the nudity. I guess they wanted to talk.
The picture here clearly prevails over the content. The series has a high rating, but be prepared for gradual disappointment. The actor pulls, although a couple of episodes can be safely cut. “Scary tales” is a hopeless longing!
P.S.
Something similar emotionally was with the series “Strain”. I jumped into it with delight, after one or two seasons I checked on the machine.
I don’t understand how you can diagnose a series of 3 seasons after watching a few episodes. Although I can understand people who did not examine it.
The first season I watched a lot, with pleasure; the second – a little choke, expecting that now it will be interesting; the third – to close this topic.
The storylines themselves are interesting, the idea of bringing well-known (and not so) horror characters to one city at the same time and see what happens is very promising. But the implementation has gone down.
Some slurred, inexplicable decisions of the characters, the events of which only one reaction ' Here's the twist!' (as in the known meme). Why do characters go to the den of the enemy? Do you have to be alone at night? It is advisable not to tell anyone.
A very subtle theme of faith is raised, but it is lowered on the brakes in season 2-3. So whatever it is, it doesn't shine.
Vanessa's character - on the one hand a strong woman, on the other hand a broken one - sometimes makes so many incomprehensible decisions, as if it was all some very bad dream. Sometimes it is more disgusting than compassion.
Interesting move with a psychologist - what if all events are just a way for a sick brain to explain events? What if demons are visions of a sick woman?
The character of Frankenstein - on the one hand interesting, but a lot of snot! I’ve been waiting for the water to leak! Why Dr. Jekyll was added is not clear at all - some pompous type, and Hyde is mentioned only once in the farewell scene.
In general, one of the advantages I can note is the general gloomy atmosphere, which was successfully maintained until the very end (in the last series I had to bring the brightness to the maximum), costumes and the general idea.
The rest left more questions than positive answers.

When I listened to this song in the dark, I gave it a thousand names, verses about it in ecstasy.
What if I told you that Mina Murray, Frankenstein, an obsessive werewolf and a powerful vampire were gathered in the same theater, which not so long ago worked Frankenstein monster associated with Van Helsing? You’ll probably think it’s the beginning of a joke, or you’ll be skeptical. This is the main strangeness and the main beauty of “Penny Dreadful”: this series is really better to see yourself, because it perfectly interferes and shows what to interfere and show will not occur to anyone else.
The show is perfect for incorrigible romantics. Gothic London, the atmosphere of Victorian Britain, quotes from masterpieces of world literature, stunning music, the findings of the operator, working well for the script and closely related to it, beautiful actors and sad characters who have experienced something terrible and still continue to strive to live. Everything here is imbued with romanticism, something sublime, ephemeral; what is happening can be interpreted in different ways, and to look at every detail, fantasizing how it characterizes the situation. And that's right, the series encourages that.
Repulsive scenes are available. If you wish, you can rewind them, but I do not recommend it. Cruelty, sin is the bitterness the show bets on. This is not an addition to the idea of the series, it is a full part of it.
In general, the show is an amateur; it is gloomy, in some ways pressing, in some ways frightening, but it tries to open up to the viewer, to show that behind the bloody scenery there is something bright and inspiring. The whole crew gave their all, the series is made at a high level. But to fully understand and appreciate "Penny Dreadful," you need to feel it with your heart. There are no reviews that can help.
The actors are great, all in their seats: Dalton is an unhappy, but not a give-up father, Eva Greene - she is good at playing characters immersed in mysticism, she knows how to make a terrible and at the same time attractive face, Treadway remembers the "Brothers of Rock and Roll", Josh Hartnett - well, just good, like everyone else. Not a single positive character, all people with such a normal wormhole. It must be a good show. But the genre is not mine at all. I just finished the first season.
Plot: Imagine the movie "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" sprawled into the series. Add to this the usual showtime lotions: sex, mountains of corpses, rather disgusting scenes like kisses with consumption and worms in the dilapidated dog remains - and here you have "Scary tales" (they are also "Boulevard horrors", "They are "Horrors on the cheap"). It leaves a sense of secondaryness.
Watched the second season last night but woke up this morning with this “penny horror story” still stuck in my head. I’m not a fan of dark movies at all – it took me two episodes of American Horror Stories to make sure once again that, well, this is not my thing, and not to return to this genre anymore. Exactly until last week, when I accidentally stumbled upon the soundtrack for this series on YouTube, and it just fascinated me. However, nothing surprising, as it turned out, because the music to it was written by the same composer with a difficult to pronounce Polish name, as well as the recent beautifully terrible “Night Animals”, and the mysterious “Lonely Man”.
The main characters in the series are not so much: this is a respectable Sir Malcolm, an unfaithful husband and inconsolable father who has known the grief of the loss of his children, passionately wanting to find and punish an enemy who took away the most dear from him, his faithful friend and assistant, who is ready to give his life for friends, a silent Simbin, a former slave trader, and now he himself is a servant in a rich house, although it is difficult to call him a slave, this is known to everyone Dorian Gray , who received the ambitious idea of life in front of a young man, but who is also obsessed with his own egoism, after his own life, but who is also in a young man, who is obsessed with his own life, but who is in love, who is also in a young man, but who has become a man, after his own life, but who has a man, who has become a man, who is more obsessed with God, after his own sinful one who has become a man, after his own life, but who has become a man, who has become a Each hero is well spelled out - each with its own dual character, with its own personal tragedy and life purpose.
But the central character of this story is, of course, the mysterious Miss Vanessa Ives.
At the beginning of the story, she appears as a kind of ideal “snow queen” – a beautiful, eternally pale lady without much emotion, cold and politely restrained with everyone. Only with the passage of time we will learn what the heroine really is, we will reveal her secret, learn the difficult story of her life, see her ambiguous character and make sure that she not only elegantly knows how to wear dark clothes, charms men one or two times, impeccably dances, skillfully reads the fates of the Tarot cards, but also suffers from remorse due to committed mistakes, periodically stubbornly struggles with inner demons and quite real evil spirits, and also deftly manages with the household when there is a need, but, most importantly, she sincerely cares about something for her lovers in the old life, and friends, who gradually cares for her lover’s help in her life. In these moments we see a completely different Vanessa - real, alive, with tears of compassion or a warm sincere smile, moments even happy.
Eva Green surprises me every time, well, really, how can she be equally convincing in the role of a fatal seductress with a languid look from under long eyelashes and a devil-obsessed unhappy with completely crazy eyes, with a grimace of horror on her face and a stack of spreading black hair?
Well, according to the law of the novel, where there is a beautiful woman, there should be a real man. Ethan Chandler. Almost two-meter handsome with a slight grin in brown eyes, a daring American, a lover of fights, shooting, and also drinking and beautiful women. Simple as three pennies. But this is only at first glance. Like every character in this story, he too has his own secret, his sins, his past, about which we learn, but not all.
Despite his flaws and dark past, he immediately has an incomprehensible sympathy. Most of all, his loyalty and infinite kindness bribe him - he can not watch the violence (the scenes with the pimp-piper, the punishment of the vampire Malcolm), although he is sometimes cruel; he admires his sense of compassion and care for the beloved woman dying of tuberculosis, and then for Miss Ives during her attacks of obsession, his determination and desire to fight to the end with people who gradually become his friends. And the love for this character from series to series only grows.
But, no matter how well our main characters fit each other, a happy ending in their case will not happen, at least at the end of the second season - Raskolnikov syndrome will not allow Ethan to stay with Vanessa, despite his insistent "I'm coming with you" before. But she kept her promise to accept him.
And finally, I'll go back to where I started, the main character, in my opinion, of this series. To music. In each episode it is so different, but equally absolutely stunning, unforgettable, so atmospheric and accurately captures everything that is happening at this moment on the screen. She, alarming and foreshadowing danger, the main theme of Demimonde, she is sad and soothing Modern Age, she is alive and fascinating Street.Horse.Smell.Candle, like the childish mind of Proteus, rediscovering the world on the dirty street of London, she is simply heartbreaking Joan Clayton during the terrible and painful death of the main mentor and defender of the "little Scorpion", she remained only in the air, as well as Ms.
Although, the series is incredibly good not only for its music and visual component, but also for its psychology. Under the mask of cheap horrors, the most important questions are hidden: the paramount importance of family and the vital need to be loved, the sacrificial friendly loyalty and betrayal of loved ones, the true beauty and ugliness of the soul, the search for the meaning of life, oneself in it and the inevitability of death, destiny and choice that everyone makes his own, the shaking of faith and the torment of conscience as the most terrible retribution for what he did, well, and, perhaps one of the main threads stretching through the entire plot of the series, is the immortal thought of Saint-Exupery - "we are responsible for those who are responsible."
This is one of the most underrated modern series, a real masterpiece that I accidentally discovered for myself, which is incredibly happy.
It's a must see.
Creepy and touching, disgusting and sensual, about love and hatred. These are not all the epithets that can be called the first season.
A father who in his old age realized that children are the only and most precious thing he has in life. But by that time he had already buried his son, and the eldest daughter was missing. In the first season, all seemingly incompatible characters from the fairy tales of childhood and youth are collected, but with each episode, it becomes logical that they are looking for a missing daughter side by side with their father. In the season, there are series from which blood begins to flow more slowly, and the hand constantly winds the series back so as not to leave the atmosphere that the series created. All this adds up to one story, or even one terrible tale, which not everyone will be able to accept and understand.
Evil and weak. That’s how I felt after the second season. Weak not because they didn’t make it through the game or something else, but because the willpower of the main characters was weaker than it seemed before.
Before the start of the last season, I accidentally read reviews that talk about a weak end, I managed to get upset, but in vain.
In the third season, it becomes clear that despite the years when human life was not worth a penny, you could always be killed on any occasion. But after watching the last episode, the thought runs through my head ' we are all human'. I don’t have the epithets I used to describe the previous two seasons, it’s just that.
It is up to you to watch the series or not to watch it. But if you want to really enjoy the story, the actors, the costumes and everything that makes this show what it is, I suggest you. But before you start, I recommend you not to roll your lip, and not wait for an easy plot, these three seasons are for people who know how to think and those who understand how the storyline of the hero ends if he just left. . .
Well, I finally looked, and I'm ready to tell you about:
The series "Scary Tales" 2014-2016. Very atmospheric series. As I watched, I plunged into that era, with all its achievements and failures. This is a story about cursed souls seeking God’s forgiveness. More about the actors and their characters:
Miss Vanessa Ives played by Eva Green is the main character, the most unhappy girl with a mysterious fate. She has the hardest time living with her demons. Eva Greene performed this role perfectly. In one episode, her soul is consumed by a demon, and she plays obsession so believably that I got goosebumps. I was very worried about her in every episode.
Sir Malcolm Murray played by Timothy Dalton is an aristocrat, a wealthy London gentleman, not without skeletons in his closet. You will not wish his fate or his enemy. Poor old man. I truly felt sorry for him. Timothy Dalton played his character beautifully, as if the actor was just living his life.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein, played by Harry Treadaway, is a young, ambitious scientist striving to defeat death. The dreams were beautiful, and the result was disastrous. Despite the results of the experiment, he tried to finish it. It is good that he finally realized everything and stopped his experiments. It was the first time I saw Harry Treadaway, and I think he has a great future because he played Victor.
Ethan Chandler (Talbot) played by Josh Harnett is a mysterious American who came to London by accident, hiding from a crime committed in America. He's the second most important hero, after Miss Ives. Fate was no less cruel to him than to Vanessa. The character is interesting, but in my opinion, a bit cardboard - a typical brutal hero. But the actor is trying, it shows.
Dorian Gray played by Reeva Carney is the owner of a large mansion in London. The very concept of “debauchery” and “passion” and “pleasure”. He is intriguing from the very first appearance in the frame. The character is memorable, but almost at the very end managed to amaze and surprise me. Reeve Carney is one hundred percent hit in the image.
There are several other actors, but I will not describe them in detail. Butler, "first man" doctor, psychologist, witches. I will say that each of them is well written, and the actors play them well. 10 out of 10 can't bet and here's why:
1. Some nasty scenes, mostly involving Dorian. Believe me, if there were none, it would be better.
2. Dr. Henry Jekyll-INDUS. What nonsense is going on in the minds of writers.
3. Dr. Abraham Van Helsing was monstrously unfairly “leaked,” and very quickly.
In the end, I really liked the series. I really enjoyed watching it. For those who love mystery and mystery, watch it.

Finally... This series is finally over, I didn’t have to wait for another 3 seasons. The authors finished on time as never before. Yes!
Season 3 was an absolute lack of plot: what is the series about? Everything is funny: different countries, vampires, cities, love, and book characters. Just one question: why? Why did the writers make this up? The series started so well and interestingly. I expected more from the plot, but it turns out everything is so banal. Not only that, the series is almost always dark and there is no normal joyful moment. And if it is, then it is ruined by dirt.
Even the cast did not save the series.
George Hartnett tried to believably play his hero, still nothing came of it. Newly made nerd, and in the common people botanist - Eva Green absolutely spoiled with her efforts. She suffered too diligently, too much was hung on her heroine.
Timothy Dalton is gorgeous and attractive at any age, his green eyes can not be confused with anyone, but his charm does not save.
The rest of the participants in this action similarly played disgustingly, which spoiled not only the plot, but also the overall impression of the series.
If you do not feel sorry for your time and effort, then be sure to watch this series and all seasons are better.

A wonderful Gothic atmospheric series for a genre amateur. We love the atmosphere, but we don’t need more.
I read somewhere that the creator wrote the script for Eva Green, which is right and good for us, because the actress coped with 5+. Sometimes the girl is attacked for unsuccessful images on the red carpet, but here in the 19th century, with beautiful, dark dresses in the floor and the languid look of a gloomy beauty, Eva fit perfectly.
I noticed a feature that now the directors do not bother with the semantic load and unravel all the murky storylines and facts, the emphasis is on certain details. For example, scenery (we have a gloomy, crowded London of the 19th century, an atmospheric, magnificent mansion, a beautiful witch's hut with all sorts of rims - dream catchers, etc.), costumes that chill the skin of the stage (nudes, corpses and all at once) and acting (a beautiful dark alliance of Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Harnett, etc.)
Despite the fact that the series, like shawarma, is stuffed with absolutely diverse scenes and characters, together they look surprisingly organic. The monsters are not very elaborate and terrible (I watch the first season and I think why the creation of Frankenstein has such a familiar face? And Dracula hurts as much, black eyes will sparkle, and hide, but at night impressionable people better not look. (When Eve began to tumble her eyes, wriggle on the bed and lament, she had to hide under the blanket.)
Season 1. Boring and sticky like berry jelly. Some may be disappointed in the series, but season 2 will not leave anyone indifferent. Season 3 ends with a logical end - a little pity, I would like to look at everyone at least once more.
I believed the actors. Scared. I'm upset. It is recommended to watch it.
The third season organically completes all the storylines started in the first two, but, it is even funny, breaks the only one of its own. In principle, the untapped potential of Dr. Jekyll I consider the only drawback of the plot, because here he exclusively pacifies the sick, but not his own animal nature. And there is a clear reference to it in the course of the plot, but it hints at a sequel that we will never see again. And then, if you do not find fault, then the series is completed perfectly, and Jekyll is useful for the plot by the fact that it shades the depressed Frankenstein.
Ethan’s story arc is the best of all seasons, and just beautiful in itself. It not only adds to the plot of atmospheric geography (USA during the Wild West, Zanzibar) and reveals the image of my favorite witch Hecate, but also managed to adequately show the family history of the werewolf, which was escalated both first seasons. I admit, I didn’t expect such depth and gloom, so I was pleasantly surprised by the work of the writers. However, the gloom, naturalism, drama and atmosphere are the four main features of the series, for which it is worth watching.
Frankenstein's monster remained just as unbearably despondent, but this is not a fault. Rather, this character should be disclosed in this way, because with the plot everything is logical and logical. And yes, I finally waited for the perfect unveiling of one of my favorite literary images, Dorian Gray. Here he stopped having sex with boys and showed his true essence in all its glory, his monologue about loneliness is one of the best moments of the series, and the image itself is perhaps the best of all film adaptations.
We can say that the plot begins too slowly, but the stronger the contrast between a measured introduction and a fast, dynamic, hard denouement. We will show Dracula, who is probably inferior to the same Jonathan Reese Myers, but looks perfect against the background of other vampires. Yes, the plot will again be these pathetic and ridiculous creatures, but here it is only the background, which is shaded by other plots, and therefore does not bother much. Overall, I was happy with the series, and especially that it got better every season. Separately, I would like to mention the translation of Greb and Creative Group Company for AMEDIATEKA, which for some time I consider the best of all (yes, even signed up for a month, and if I do, I will write about another erotic of them a little later).

I originally liked the series... Somehow I got caught up... But then... It's hard to even find words. The actors play believably and honestly, but the writers, in my opinion, ruined the whole picture. The very idea of assembling all the sinister characters in one movie is not bad on the one hand, but on the other hand it reeks of speculation. But this is a controversial moment and everyone must decide for themselves. But the fact that you could come up with a scenario that is much more dynamic and at the same time fascinating and frightening is undeniable! Otherwise, the potential of the characters is simply not revealed, which can be seen in this picture. In addition, the plot is crumpled, and in some cases simply primitive. The third season was especially special. There were a couple of moments after which it became simply uninteresting to watch. The identity of the detective from London is gradually revealed, his tenacity, insight, methodicalness are shown. And the viewer sits and thinks, "When he gets to the villain, it's just going to be an epic battle!" But that wasn't it, ladies and gentlemen! Everything ends as it is now customary to say “fake”, no more, I will not describe which one, so as not to reveal the storyline, but what they decided to do with this character in my opinion, at least strange. Here I really remember the variant of the literary translation of the title of the series: tabloid or even cheap horrors, despite the large budget and good production. Second point: one of the main characters had to meet a werewolf! Otherwise, why did they have a relationship in season 1? The list of questions can be continued... The main disappointment from the series was caused by this: the series keeps the attention due to the acting and characters, and you sit and think about how the events will develop, but you see that of all the variants of events, the writers offered the most ridiculous and crumpled.
Separately, it should be noted the presence of homosexual scenes, which is propaganda of this and in my opinion does not adorn the picture. Therefore, for lovers of mysticism and horror, I recommend finding something more worthy than a series with a beautiful screensaver and music, but without not only morality, but also any philosophy.
At first, I was a little disappointed that the plot of the series consists mainly on well-known stories, which, by the way, were repeatedly exploited by Hollywood, and nothing new will be shown. My opinion changed by the end of the first season, the series dragged on with its charisma, or the actors their game. It is very difficult to combine several plots in one work, and especially to do it so that it would turn out logical and interesting, and “Darrors on the Cheap” is just that case of a successful combination of different stories.
All literary characters from different works have a common component here, the main character of Miss Ives, who, played by Eva Green, makes you watch the series from beginning to end, sympathize and empathize with her. Eva Green in this series combines gloom and romanticism, the attractiveness of the eye and fatal passion, madness and obsession, this can not but catch. The storyline of Vanessa Ives should keep the whole structure of the series, and Eva Green played great, she combined scary tales into one whole. The spiritual struggle, even against the background of fictional mythical stories, looks convincing and tragic, while watching something mystical was felt.
It was unexpected to see Josh Hartnett, there were no high-profile premieres with him for a long time, and then he played a convincing friend of the main character, and throughout the series his character changed. And without Timothy Dalton and Helen McCrory is generally difficult to imagine the series, they added experience and purely English charm.
Dialogue, scenery, costumes and music, all created a favorable impression of the series in tandem, the atmosphere of industrial London, the Victorian atmosphere added fabulousness.
The series is definitely worth the attention. It can be attributed to the romantic genre, to those who like to dream and live in a fairy tale, to an unusual combination and gothic. There is nothing terrible in “Scary Tales”, but there is much more, you can of course find fault with the exploitation of the topic of sex and religion, immoral scenes, but in this case they are justified by the plot.
“Scary Tales” is one of the few series that were completed on time, there is a beginning and a logical ending, and not just the end but a catchy tragic ending.
9 out of 10
In the gloomy tones of the Victorian era, a number of odious heroes of classic horrors came together. We are already ready that we will be frightened, but we hardly expect that what we see will affect something hidden, the horror will not come from the outside, but will painfully seep out trickles from ourselves.
The series is imbued with psychology and philosophy of life, going far beyond the brink of despair, throws away all the canons of fairy tales, confronting the viewer with the horrors of human nature and existence. Bloodsuckers, witches and demons pale in comparison to what awaits us in the psychological labyrinths of the main characters. Rage, hatred, vanity, revenge, obsession, fear, guilt, loneliness, satiety and boredom – reaching a climax in the souls of their creators do not give them hope for salvation. Paralyzed by inner demons, the heroes steadily plunge into hell, built in the halls of their own mind.
The narrative itself is deliberately uneven in places, the plot seems to move away from what is happening on the screen, obscured by the experiences of the characters and magnificently gloomy sketches in the frame. The actions of the heroes lack a certain logic. As if bifurcated in their personalities, they rush in decisions, choosing increasingly winding paths, if leading to the goal, then to the mirror reflected in the curve.
Although the series is completed, the viewer will be haunted for a long time by the images created on the canvases of this film. How stored animations will be played over and over again:
How a soft smile, through a timid hope, replaces the grimace of suffering on Vanessa's face. She pays for each of her sins as if her payment would atone for the crimes of all mankind, and the God to whom her frantic prayers are addressed becomes more and more ghostly in the darkness that pervades existence.
How Dorian, standing in his full of luxury hall, sees off another boring fun with an irrevocably faded look. His passions dissolved in eternal youth, and each new toy becomes an increasingly distant echo of past feelings.
As tears roll over the scarred face of the resurrection of the romantic sad Caliban. Being an animated corpse, he is one of the few who managed to preserve humanity, and it burns with bright fire in his heart, though dead, but not dead.
Despite its title and the kaleidoscope of monsters that appeared on the screen, the series is ruthlessly realistic. Before us is a slightly torn picture, painted with thick colors of blood, sex, fear and despair.
