The main character of the film Sam is a musician and composer. A young man with a great sense of humor, and he is clearly not in danger of loneliness. Whether it is his apartment or a hotel room, where he is in the agony of creativity, then in painful torments and memories ... in any of his homes, someone is constantly breaking into ... It can be a girl – more or less strange, but with its own history, or a young African-American who came “to visit” through a window that never locks and because it is warm and there is a good musical selection.
The story with the first girl does not raise any special questions... the story is beautiful, the story is dramatic, and she has very little airtime... but you believe in the feelings of this couple. The second story is more intricate, it intrigues both the main character and the Spectator. Sam by that time pretty podzak and such a quest, which the girl decided to play, he only benefits - to ventilate his head, zero feelings, stir up imagination and finally add color to the black and white image.
The romantic story is interesting. The acting is decent. Moreover, the actors in non-title roles delight and impress with their play no less than the main characters. It is impossible not to notice, not to highlight Forest Whitaker as the owner of the hotel and best friend of Sam. There is also an episode in which African-American teenagers perform hip-hop.
And yet... looked at the heroine, looked and so and so sak... and could not escape the thought that the choice of actress made extremely unsuccessful. All attempts to put her next to Sam and see a harmonious pair, crumbled to dust. He and she are utter dissonance. And it was obvious to me that she was not the heroine of his novel... she was like a child stuck in a coma... a child who had missed a small but so important piece of life. And I don’t see a future for this couple... oh, evil me.
Such incidents, visual inconsistencies of the main characters are always distracting, dulling interest and causing some irritation. As a result, the overall perception and impression of the film suffers.
Enjoy your viewing, everyone.
I'm in love with a bathroom, or a novel through a closed door.
The movie is amazing. After the first half-hour, I knew I was going to love him. Melodrama is not my favorite genre, but here is a very unusual story that has nothing to do with classical melodrama. This film stands in line with the good old "Barefoot on the pavement" and "Benny and June." He evoked in me exactly such associations, because he is equally piercing, moderately sad, touching, kind, soulful, beautiful and funny at the same time. A live film that causes a violent reaction to what is happening and finds a strong emotional response from the viewer. When watching it, you can alternately admire the frame, fall into emotion, laugh and empathize, but you will not be bored. Let's add some great music.
The love of the characters begins with conversations through a locked bathroom door. It's strange, but it's beautiful and porous. When finally manages to break this barrier, the novel develops beautifully, touchingly, and almost smoothly. Is it not a symbol that we build ourselves barriers to happiness? They were lucky to have a friend who wanted to help them be happy.
I really want to celebrate the actors and characters.
I especially liked Sam. Such an almost impeccable character: very beautiful, and kind, and charming, and caring, and possessing an endless number of positive qualities, but not template, not flat, not standard and boring image of a positive guy. He is lively, persuasive and endlessly likable, but with a bright, memorable personality. In order not to fall in love, the viewer may need to make an effort. With the actor Rupert Friend to meet previously had in the little-known, but brilliant and cult for most watching the film “the Libertine” Lawrence Dunmore. The film is undeniably stunning, and Rupert's supporting character there is also compelling. But some... not bright, a victim of circumstances. That’s why I was really surprised by Rupert’s acting potential and energy in Lullaby for P. The audience’s attention and sympathy are entirely on the side of his hero. Rupert, beware, now I will study your acting!
Forrest Whitaker, loved by the acclaimed cult "Ghost Dog" Jim Jarmusch. Here he appears in the image of a good patron of indecisive lovers. Kind, wise, disposing, and infinitely charismatic and charming. The best qualities of the Ghost Dog are present in the porter George.
Clemens Poesy, known for the magnificent "Lie low in Bruges". Pi (or Pai) - the role is more difficult, and therefore here I liked the actress more. A very complex and bright heroine with oddities turned out to be convincing, impressive, unforgettable. There is no impression of mental disorders, Pai appears as an unusual girl with a subtle mental organization and a special perception of the world. An almost unearthly creature whose actions often defy description by conventional logic. Very vulnerable and sensitive, very creative, and very cute and touching. Complete antipode of the secular beauty and winner in life. This is what disarms her.
The film itself is made very beautifully, if we talk about the staged footage itself, and if we talk about the interiors. But much more important here is beautiful music of different plans, which in this beautiful film is very much, and which creates its beautiful unique atmosphere.
The film looks easy, pleasant, with interest and empathy. Aren't these signs of a really good movie? I liked everything in it, strongly and absolutely: atmosphere, music, plot, characters, actors, dialogues, scenes, shooting, scenery, beginning, ending. Another favorite movie. You may also like it a lot.
Rarely do I see films that capture me completely, wrapped in their atmosphere. When we watch movies, we often see how much time we have left. This is not the case! Here, looking at the runner of time, there is a painful sadness at the fact that this incredible and, at the same time, such a simple story will end.
It was especially nice to see Rupert Friend as such a sweet, gentle, sensual musician, since before that I saw him as Hitman.
Actually, after watching Hitman: Agent 47, I wanted to know what an actor like Rupert Frand was like. Not for nothing, as it turned out!
Clemence Poetry, known to many for her role in Harry Potter, was also not an actress of one role. Whether she played very naturally, sometimes sadly, sometimes insanely romantic and almost the whole film intriguing and mysterious.
Some delights are caused by music: blues in the live performance of Frand, wonderful atmospheric songs that emphasize the highlight of the film – the night. After all, there are very few scenes in the daytime natural light, all the action takes place at night in a cozy hotel room, in a cafe with live blues and even in the hallways, illuminated by the soft light of lanterns.
This film is not another tearful melodrama, this is a vintage love story. On the one hand, everything that happens is very romantic and sweet, but in ordinary life it is impossible, on the other hand, it is impossible not to believe in the truthfulness and sincerity of the characters.
You can sing praises for a long time to the tape, which for some reason was not released and is not known to the masses. It is only necessary to say that everything is done qualitatively and there is no desire to find fault with anything. So, whether you are watching this film alone or in someone’s company, you are guaranteed a feeling of comfort!

My favorite method of choosing a movie to watch is by acting. So today, after flipping through the filmography of Clemence Poetry, I caught my eye for this special work of cinema art. I was not disappointed at all.
The idea. At first, it seems rather banal the worn-out idea of an eternally grieving widower who, without his deceased wife, goes into all seriousness and ruins his life. In this case, we see Sam quit playing the piano, running the store almost to bankruptcy and sitting out his long lonely evenings in a hotel room, waiting for a call from his wife. But the methods by which the hero is pulled out of his self-destruction are rather unusual. I can’t remember a single story in which the main character, thanks to the efforts of his faithful old friend, would fall in love with a girl living in his bathroom!
Characters. This film is not a touted Hollywood outlier, which is full of various clichés about the main characters. Pi is not a long-legged model with the appropriate parameters, Sam is not the owner of a pretty face and a charming smile. They are two ordinary people with their own characteristics, with which they were able to attract each other, and no one else. Sam’s friend is a simple and kind person who simply could not look at the suffering of his ward anymore and sincerely, like his father, rejoiced in the love he himself nurtured. This trio was incredibly pleasant to look at, they caused a warm smile and good thoughts throughout the picture.
On music. The music is beautiful! Sometimes takes by the soul, sometimes causes laughter, sometimes sympathy, sometimes sadness. What I liked most about her was that she was alive. It's a far cry from the worked-out and processed studio music we hear in 99% of movies. Her hero plays live on stage, picking up words and, sometimes, notes on the go. Music is not an accompaniment to the events of the film, it is an event!
To conclude, this film is not for everyone. Fans of realistic stories with bad endings and cruel realities of life should not look here, otherwise they will drown in romance, sincere love and warmth. They might get infected again!
This film may appeal to my friend because the main character smokes Camel, this film may appeal to my friend because the main character is photographed with her palm over her eyes... and for the same reasons this film may not appeal to you. Is that the way to look at the picture? This is the problem of choice, it seems the only problem of mankind.
What if the choice of protagonists comes down to the bathroom door in a cheap hotel room? On one side stands musician Sam, wearing a hat and mourning for a Philadelphia girl. He is constantly reviewing his favorite movie and seems to be waiting for a magical call from the other world, playing the script of the first meeting with Philadelphia again and again. On the other hand, it hides from the outside world of Pi. She looks like her name, and hides an infinite number of fears after the decimal point. She has a diary on the walls of the apartment and paint instead of an eraser, she has a camera and instant pictures instead of words, and most importantly, she has Sam's voice on the other side of the door.
Pi, running away from her problems, ran into a random room and locked herself in the bathroom. Sam, running away from his problems, was filming the same random number that night. That's how these two sit now, trying to build a relationship with the door and decide whether to open it? But the main choice each of them will have to make inside themselves, because you can leave the hotel room, get off the stage of the club, and find a way to escape from fear and uncertainty is impossible.
This story is slowly rocking, and by the time the plot of the picture becomes quite tangible, the viewer has time to get used to the characters, begin to empathize with them. There is a sense of slowness, but the plot does not sag. The picture just moves at the same pace as the characters, then uncertainly, then rapidly, - no dissynchronous.
The pace here plays a separate role, the music smoothly flows from jazz to hip-hop and back, managing to capture everything that can be sung or played. But what exactly has become a real lullaby for Pi, let everyone decide for himself ... or will not decide and will, like me, write this text at two o'clock in the morning and ask: "Where is the lullaby for me?"

When your rival becomes an eternally perfect (dead) girl
It could be poetry, but whether I’m too cynical on this bright morning (of course, the evening viewing is another matter), or the director-writer is not completely sincere in this work, and the actors tried, as best they could, to implement, among other things, an amazing idea. The film presents itself as a story of two, but in fact it involves three, if not four. Starting with the former girlfriend of the protagonist Sam Josephine, who, obviously, left a deep mark in the soul of the main character with his untimely departure, and ending with Sam’s friend, the “key keeper” in the hotel, in which all the most significant events of this uncomplicated love story take place. In general, in the relationship of two creative souls climb different personalities, living and dead. Because of this, the story ceases to be personal, intimate. It becomes some kind of property, and some scenes that take place exclusively between the two are a bit fake. Escaping from clichés, hiding behind beautiful details (like the name of the main character Pi and her tattoo, conversations outside the bathroom door), the creators fall into an even greater cliche. It seems that the main character is a blues musician, and his chosen one takes pictures of everything on a Polaroid and dresses in a naive childish style. And it also paints the walls, because these days we're all artists, forced to hide in boring, but paid jobs. There is too much drama where it is not needed. Why must there be some trauma behind every strangeness? Why can’t this weirdness exist on its own? It's kind of weird, like when a girl meets guys through a closed door or adds a new number to her digital tattoo around her navel every time she learns something new about herself. This endless cinematic quest to explain everything kills the magic, especially in such ephemeral films. So, some scenes are really embarrassing with their kind of movie banality, but as always in this case, music saves everything.
The film is quite musical, since the main character is a musician, composer and a good vocalist (for white, of course). So the music that can be heard in some small jazz club somewhere on the outskirts of a big city, the whole film sounds, blending with the story and personality of the protagonist, whose best friends for a long time were a cigarette, a glass of whiskey, favorite records and sadness. It's all beautiful and atmospheric. And sometimes you want to forgive all these clichés, and justify the movie. Allegedly, in our evil world, full of skeptics, there is not a little room for magic, a little mathematics, and romance? That's sweet, touching. And the acting work of the amazing Rupert Friend and rarely appearing in big cinema Clemance Poetry do not disappoint. And Forest Whitaker's game is still smooth and warm.
“Lulaby for Pi” is a melodrama for those who love stories about beautiful “broken” heroes, love in a closed space, small tragedies in the life of each hero (but just enough so that they do not distract from the main line) and in general for those who want to experience light sadness on a lonely evening (I just insist on an evening viewing).
Melodrama, but not really about love. That’s probably the phrase that comes to mind when I try to summarize my opinion about this film.
The film is about how he met her, or rather how fate brought them together.
And if often, the characters of the film are quite ordinary people - work, dream about something, strive for something, then this film is not one of them. He is a strange musician in depression, she is also an even stranger weirdo seemingly without depression.
That is, the film is so strange and cares little about its plot that the main character practically does not reveal. Yes, there will be a couple of phrases about her towards the end of the film, but they don’t affect anything. In fact, the plot is generally little influenced, to guess what the film will end is not difficult.
And here lies the plus of the film - we are not less interested in this. The plot here is secondary, in the foreground characters. And yes, they play great and interesting in the background too (thanks for Forest Whitaker!), but we’re much more interested in Sam and P (or Pie as I watched). And the couple is really interesting, and quite suitable for each other right away. Clemens Poetry is very sweet and cute, and the strangeness of her behavior adds some charm. Rupert Friend is very good to wear a hat and sings quite well. Oh yes, there are a lot of songs and music here, but what do you really want from the movie “Lullaby”?
So, if friends ask me for a good and kind film with a non-standard plot, I will immediately recommend a story about Sam singing a lullaby for P.
Yes, not a masterpiece, but it is worth seeing.
While Hollywood bosses again disgrace the honest name of cinema, releasing, God forgive me, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, I want to talk about real, authentic art, and the film “Lullaby for Pi”, without any doubt, fits this immodest description.
I decided to watch this film because of the involvement of two iconic figures: the stunning and authoritative Forest Whitaker and the indescribably sweet and charming Clemence Poetry. But after watching, I was delighted with the third main character, Rupert Friend, whose play was really strong, convincing and memorable. Forest Whitaker is a kind of guardian angel who cares about the main characters, helping them find and find each other. His hero is sincere, life-loving and incredibly kind, which makes this film not only romantic, but also homely and cozy in its own way. As for Clemence Poetry, she appears in a similar role as in The Last Love of Mr. Morgan. She is incredibly sweet, immensely charming and stunningly charming. And although her roles are not yet diverse and versatile, but her spiritual beauty, innocent fragility and enticing tenderness pay for it so that Clemence Poetry sneaked into the list of my favorite actresses.
To be fair, I cannot but say that the film has some shortcomings and gaps, mainly in terms of the script, but you can and even need to close your eyes to these details in order to fully enjoy this beautiful, melodic, romantic, heartwarming, touching and seductive film.
Of course, this film can not be called a reference or exemplary in its genre. This film has a lot to criticize, but do you think that in our lives there is enough cynicism, censure and skepticism? Recently, I have a superfluous melancholy in my soul, but after this picture, it was replaced by hearty warmth and peaceful calm... at least for the time of the final credits, for which this movie can already be sincerely thanked and recommended for viewing.

Great movie. It seems to me that for modern cinema this is a find film. Bright, musical, a little intriguing. A lullaby can be hard to find, but if it finds you, it’s best to obey and look. Or listen.
It's a great story. Throughout the film, you’re kind of excited about the fact that you’re constantly asking yourself, “What’s the big deal, what’s the mystery, oh, no matter what they’re missing....” And you didn't. The creators smoothly came out in the right direction and everything came together in a single picture.
As for the characters...
Sam is a musician, a desperate guy who lost his wife. And so he "enjoys" his despondency, waiting for a call from Josephine. All this happens for a while, until she bursts into his life, the girl from the bathroom. And then the number 3.14 fills his life with its own meaning.
Pi is a strange girl who is looking for herself and at the same time constantly struggling with her thoughts, fears, surrounding the world in the end. She even has her own wall diary.
I don't want you to talk. I don't wanna talk. I'd just like to hear your voice. No words. Just a sound. Just to know I'm not alone. Please.
George, the owner of the hotel, acts here as the Guardian Angel. Such a kind guy who is always ready to help and most importantly knows when to do it.
There are other characters, mostly Sam's friends, who just ended up in his apartment. Sam, in turn, let them stay. They are primarily united by music, the Blues, as you can just pass by.
Of course, some moments, such as Pi’s past, may not be fully thought out. But it is clear that the main characters are really trying to overcome difficulties, each in his own way oversteps himself. Sam finds a new inspiration to play, despite the fact that his wife is “still somewhere nearby”, and P does not close himself, on the contrary, goes to meet, because he understands that Sam needs her, just as she needs him.
A lullaby for Pi is a pleasure. So why not enjoy it?
Too deliberate to be true... or a beautiful deception.
The whole film did not leave the feeling that everyone is overplaying, including the director and writer.
Here the actor, diligently slouching, walks down a dark alley in smoke, clearly referring to the image of the lone hero from the noir detective. But the actress, who was chosen for “give me the most piercing look!”, tries to convince the viewer that this look is not the focus of a frightening emptiness. Here is the owner of the store, who almost decided to sell the shop, listens to the main character, who sluggishly does not want to lose his place, as it were dear to him. But all attempts to attach real importance to specific spaces/places ultimately boil down to a simple explanation: “here was his wife...”
And those scenes and images are a whole movie. All 98 minutes we are given a suspension of clichés and drawn images, trying to press on all known buttons, but they try so deliberately and ineptly that instead of tears they awaken only bile and slight annoyance for the time spent.
