When you love someone, you cannot avoid the pain.
From a little cocky and exalted, but certainly sane (pardon the anime slang) girl drawing comics, the guy leaves, and leaves almost before the wedding. His new passion is a famous film diva, disappearing all day on the set, but always carving out time to maintain a beautiful form. For some time, the abandoned artist spends in depression, which tends to be diluted with violent libations at parties, but then joins forces with the ubiquitous girlfriends and ex-boyfriend of the same movie star - because he, presumably, also has old scores. So begins this film, which, despite the title, is more about trying to get back an ex-boyfriend than revenge.
Eva Jin - almost debutante in the world of cinema - shot quite a typical film, if we talk about the usual Asian melodrama comedies, perfectly described by the term kawaii. The main character is a little slutty, but extremely sweet; her experiences and actions are so infantile that it is impossible not to remember her first love, rejected or unrequited; hence the complacent mood with which the picture looks. She simply does not want to scold even for objective shortcomings, just as I do not want to scold such lovers and abandoned girls when they meet on our life path: it seems to be a fool, and suffers for what is in vain, but how not to pat on the head and promise that everything will be fine?
The film is remarkable for the incredible reincarnation of Zhang Ziya, more familiar in the images of brave warriors, balancing on bamboo branches and skillfully managing with a sharp sword. Anyone who has seen her in The Hero, The Crouching Tiger, or The House of Flying Daggers will experience cognitive dissonance in their own skin when the Queen mustache begins to tip one glass after another while wearing a lamb costume. Against this background, somehow lost and Bingbing Fan, later returned to Eva Jin in “Night Surprise”, and better known for the series So Ji Sop and Peter Ho. Every year Zhang Ziyi discovers new facets of talent, and it is incredibly great to follow.
If we talk about the plot, then it does not shine with special merits - the ending can be guessed in the middle of the film, but the relaxed humor and good atmosphere make, firstly, to watch the tape to the end, and secondly, to rejoice for the fate of the characters regardless of whether the love square was corny resolved or not. Perhaps it is all about the Eastern color – in any case, any (well, almost any) European picture on this topic looks much more secondary. So romantically minded people to get acquainted with “Sophie’s Revenge” is definitely worth it.
