Seeing such a division from the director of District 9 is strange to say the least. Very bad and leaky in every sense. To shoot such science fiction is a crime, the window is not the 80s and similar scenario moves with a happy ending simply should not roll. The radiation-exposed dude who scares everyone that if you shoot him or cut him, the radiation will come out and poison everyone else in the room doesn’t look strange in the background of the rest of the world. On Earth, crap is happening, the rich rest on an artificial satellite, where there are healing stations, where people from the Earth get by hares to heal. People work on Earth, too, it is unclear for what, apparently stupid for the idea that they continue to be oppressed, earlier. The number of pianos in the second half of the film is not countable. We need to make a beautiful technoska – let’s do it, no question. This is it.
What's the movie about?
2154. The rich left the depleted Earth to live on the ship Elysium, equipped with medical machines that can cure any ailment. But Max (Matt Damon) has a problem - he received a lethal dose of radiation and desperately needs to use a car like this.
Why watch?
In the ideological sequel to his “District No. 9” Neil Blomkamp again turned to the genre of satirical fiction: the classic approach “Rebel against the dystopian state” is hung with vignettes of a masculine action movie in the spirit of “Star Troops” and technically the film is close to being considered a benchmark – rarely a summer blockbuster with a large budget so boldly throws blood, violence and torn body crumbs in the viewer’s face. You also have to have the courage to openly advocate for illegal immigration and free medicine in the 2013 Hollywood action movie, because the plot essentially boils down to the fact that sick people from the third world are desperately trying to get into a luxurious superpower (allegory on America, of course) to take advantage of its medical services. However, satirical barbs do not distract from the flashes of spectacular action and soap opera about sick children and holy nurses. The role of the latter is played by Alicia Braga, repeating her own roles from “I am a legend” and “Blindness”, as the main character flaunts the bald top of Matt Damon in his typical acting performance, but who is really interesting is Charlto Copley in the role of a mercenary Elysium with carte blanche to maim and kill, received from his superiors. The actor has worked well with Blomkamp since District 9 and builds a powerful aura of mental instability around his character.
Not perfect, but head-on surpassing almost all of the big-budget fiction of recent years, Elysium confirms Blomkamp’s status as a great Cameron/Verhoven-level science fiction.

A film about a stamping worker in the world of embodied dystopia
Fantastic blockbuster Elysium 2013: what does it have to do with stamping, you ask? Having decided to revise it recently, I remembered that there the main character (a good role of Matt Damon) works at a factory for the production of combat robots. He stamps the parts of the housings for these robots, after the runoff (backlog), he installs these parts, twists, and starts the cell of automated welding and assembly. Stainless steel parts are more than 3 mm thick, stamps are made of tool steel, manual stamping on a mechanical press (manually laid blanks and shifted transitions from stamp to stamp). Footage, where the hero of Damon churns out details, was filmed in real press production in the industrial zones of Mexico City. The film is not a masterpiece, but it is worth watching. The plot is very naive, but there are many truthful moments, the trends in the stratification of society into the very rich and very poor who live here in different worlds (in principle, as in our lives) are correctly guessed: the ecology is completely killed on Earth and most of the population is huddled in poor slums, and the upper classes of society live on a giant orbital station, where living conditions are close to paradise. It is well shown that in the factory of the future, the worker is deprived of absolutely all insurance and social guarantees, the strict system of fines and absolute control of robots over employees resembles the methods of police control at “progressive” modern Apple plants or Amazon warehouses (in China, the United States, etc.). The idea that the employee is responsible for all his injuries, even received due to faulty equipment or because of moronic instructions of the authorities, and in general, the worker here is “self-employed”, not entitled to sick leave, vacations, etc., is also very fresh and in 2020 looks even more relevant than in 2013 (as far as I know, this trend is called “uberization”, since Uber began to exploit employees for the first time in the United States). In general, now there are few films where the main character is a worker at the factory, and even more so churning out details. I would recommend this film to you!
The current topic is a miserable implementation...
After the “some” events of 2020-2021, when the fragrant stench of glowing screams about the “new normal” poured from all screens, such scenarios do not seem too fantastic. After all, a year ago, some with foam at the mouth on TV screens proved to the whole world that without a bar code (not yet on the body), you are a scum of society and in general you are insane and you need to be urgently isolated. Now the drum of stupor has turned in the direction of jingo-patriotic frenzy in view of "some" other events that began under the curtain of winter. But know this: as soon as this excitement subsides, the drum will be turned back and we will be reminded again that it is time to “digitize” and so on. Those who thirst for their elysium at any cost will run away to do what they are told in the hope that after that they will come to the coveted in wet dreams. However, the concepts of beauty have their own. So let them not be offended.
The film shows “beautiful” far from the opinion of the inhabitants of the orbital artificial paradise, in whose person we see the continuation of the current breeders of a new “human”. This abyss between 'them' and 'them' is well and emotionally well shown. Between those who look up and those who look up. This is the limit of dreams of the social Darwinists of today.
The picture is conceptually correct: competently presents a contrast, shows the “all-rightness” of some and the complete lack of rights of others. What are the questions? After all: So long already established / with something you need to accept / everyone has his place / do not disturb the usual course of existence / - enter the necessary excuse-.
Even the Atlantic theme is touched upon. Earthly losers are doomed to degeneration and lack of medical care, while the orbital lucky ones, thanks to the success of medicine, got a chance for bodily immortality. Ancient legends about thousand-year-old gods and two races - masters and slaves - do not remind?
The only thing the artists did not conceptually look for: the technological gap between the “earth mob” and the “orbital patricians”. There is no space shuttle, otherwise how do Earth prisoners have space shuttles? And this is an unfortunate omission, because the creators of the Elysium would certainly take care of it. He's gone. And it is through this thread that talking monkeys rise to an unearthly surrogate paradise.
It is for the sake of the image itself and the meanings that it conveys, it is worth watching this film. "Them" must be known in person. Moreover, the intentions are not even hidden. However, all this is not always served in the right wrapper, which sometimes serves as a kind of protective mechanism from those who see in the cinema only exciting timing.
And it is this tape from the this point of view that clearly limps on both legs. Even Matt and his charisma didn't drag him here. Foster looked in an unusual manner: she does not know how to play arrogant villains. A friend of GG gave some hope, but he was quickly nailed. The main antagonist is generally shown as a crazy jerk: at the end of the film, Indian remakes of the Mortal Commander were already remembered. And the constant shaking of the camera did not add to the feeling of immersion in the picture: however, if the goal was to anger epilepsy - the film crew coped with all the 100. You can also notice that the security system of the "Elisium" resembles the Iraqi air defenses of the "Desert Storm" period. Oh yes, this is a tribute to the holes in the plot, without which it would not have happened.
In general, the film with the theme and quality of the picture that he carried in himself, had a chance to become a film, if not decades, then exactly years. However, the pompous performance, the predictability of the plot, the unpretentiousness of character profiles did their job. In some places, it smelled like modern Russian cinema (if you understand what I mean). Separately, I will note the frankly free ending of the tape with its intensity of Bollywood drama, from which the fingers crunched and the chair burned: get away from this biblical dogma with its self-sacrifice for everything! She's blowing through. Can't you think of something more original? So you're going to stick it anywhere for another thousand years in situations where fantasy refuses to climax - the finishing touches to the archetype of the screen movie hero? Oh yes, why think if there is a ready-made recipe!
That’s just almost all thirsty for their unique beautiful far “think” the same. So an attempt at realisation - an embodiment of the type-elisium - will take place, no matter how much you laugh at the film. But it is unlikely that it will be successful, because in the sentence earlier the third word was almost.
And from small causes there are more consequences!
6.5 out of 10
And that's just for the picture and its meaning. The rest of the movie is zero.
It's a shockingly simple and fascinating idea to imagine that truly rich people live in paradise. They do not know war, disease, hunger. They are beautiful like angels, educated and passionate about life. And there, at the bottom of the social pyramid, there are dirty, smelly, stupid devils who look up with envy. There are no hospitals, schools, universities, theaters in hell. No one here teaches anything highly cultured, only to survive as you have to. Elysium is a classic cyberpunk with all the canons, where the problems of today are considered through the prism of the future. There is even a messianic Christian idea of sacrifice, when the hero, transformed in the course of the story through love, takes on the troubles of all the victims and sick, consciously goes to the cross for the sake of saving others. Elysium is a beautiful progressive film!
I confess, only recently watched “Elysium”, and I have to admit that I lost time, not noticing such a “highlight” in time.
Unlike the cult "Equilibrium" in it there is no sense of déjà vu (according to the patterns of the Zamyatinsky "We"), nor the stylistic "naive" of the same dystopian "Time". Against the background of many fantastic utopias, “Elysium” rarely demonstrates a rich and dramatic plot, characteristic only of film realism, without “happy ending”, but with an indispensable optimistic effect in the final.
The main character Max shows by his example that it is necessary to fight to the end, no matter what troubles humanity gets into in its futuristic future. Even in the age of high technology, the final word must be left to man. With all his vices and weaknesses, he is still stronger than mechanics and must decide his own fate, a brave hero from 2154 sends us a signal.
Moreover, the division into an elite distanced from the Earth and the earthly plebs is not a technological result, but a purely social one. So decided the ruling circles of the future world and put the delights of technotronic civilization in the service of their, I will not fear this word, genocidal ideology.
What is the only Bulgari watch, flashed on the hand of the ambitious lady Minister of Defense Elysium, resembling a Mercedes sign in the sky? Yes, 150 years later, the markers of the elites remain the same – the same luxury in all its manifestations and at the expense of others. In order for Elysium and its inhabitants to flourish, a human herd of tortured and dispossessed people must plough on Earth day and night, for whom Elysium is only a mirage in the sky.
To destroy these unjust foundations managed a small group of daredevils, the luck of which Max was on the verge of death.
I was fortunate enough to get acquainted with the film. After all, now, seven years after the release of the picture, you catch yourself feeling light déjà vu no longer in the cinema – in life, when every day elements of fiction materialize more and more tangiblely in the real world.
Where a new round of progress will lead, of course, time will tell. “Elysium” gives food for reflection on the fate of humanity, turning to the trajectory of technological development.
A small station will save the world. I wonder how?
Elysium Paradise on earth was something that disappointed me for a number of reasons.
The disconnect between expectation and reality. A promising name that speaks of dystopia with an unusual plot. But here's what I came across:
The lack of logic in the plot and a little thought out depth of the main character. Who at the beginning is presented as a person with a criminal past, who involuntarily transforms into a hero of the planet. But it is not inspiring - for it is illogical and pathetic.
His motives are revealed, but they are so superficial that they primitively put pressure on emotions. This is especially evident when adding flashbacks from the childhood of the character.
The ending leaves much to be desired.
What are the advantages of the film?
Perhaps someone will like well-staged fights, but personally, the abundance of bloodshed only makes me turn away from the screen and try to get what I saw out of my head.
The film keeps in suspense, which for someone can also be a plus and it can even be watched without interruptions.
But still this is not the film from which you can gain high values and fill with beautiful, and so. . . . purely time to kill.
So I don't recommend it.
Reality in the form of fiction, this Elysium has existed at all times, the rich live separately, are healed, have fun, they have built their own palaces, estates and enjoy life, they always did not care about the rest of the people who are needed only to serve their wants, and even the revolution, if anything can change, it is not for long, because in time there is a degeneration of the nation, and the whole idea of fighters for freedom, equality and fraternity is destroyed by their descendants, who again begin to divide society into poor and rich, such is human nature. . . 10 out of 10.
“Let there be light!” said the electrician. And he cut the wires.
I will say right away - for all my love for any kind of film fiction, movies like ' District 9' have never been one of my favorites. And from my personal point of view, Neil Blomkamp, filming his conditional trilogy about a very sad and polluted with all sorts of waste our future, slowly climbed the stairs of the artistic ladder from this very area & #39; With its pathos and ambiguous hints, parallels and conventions, to a simpler and more human, though not devoid of places of secondaryity, & #39; Robot named Chappy' ' Elysium' in this row stands in the middle - it seems that the unnecessary pathos has not yet outlived, but it is more pleasant to look in general.
In general, the film is very good, special effects, everything. The video series is divided into two quite understandable visual pieces - the tormented and generously sprinkled with waste Earth is filmed in a gray-green scale, and the beautiful Elysium floating above it sparkles with all shades of rainbow and chromium. Naturally, the unhappy inhabitants of our planet, all as one, in a single impulse want to go upstairs, to inaccessible beauty. There you and delicious food, and inaccessible to earthlings medicine, and all other benefits. For the sake of this movement, citizens are willing to deceive, kill and even make a revolution. At the end of the review, two questions remain:
1) How will a few billion inhabitants of a crowded Earth fit on a tiny Elysium?
2) After how many days will the inhabitants of the Earth destroy Elysium and turn it into a landfill, if one small piece of the planet ten earthlings transformed into ruins of minutes like this in fifteen? And what will happen when more and more plumbers and electricians with dirty hands begin to arrive in space Mecca, desperately wanting, like the Soviet Bobik and Barbos from a children's cartoon, to lie on a soft master's bed? The question, of course, rhetorical, but apparently in the near future Elysium will suffer the earthly fate. Lights will go out, beautiful skyscrapers will collapse, green lawns will be trampled and strewn with debris. After all, for some reason, earthlings who can work with their hands in some places in their homes even hesitated to conduct electricity.
I remember one of my friends, in the middle of the two thousandth opened a pathetic nightclub with free entrance and a free welcome cocktail, and then forced to strengthen face control with a couple of lambs, allowing citizens inside very, very selectively. For the first who desperately sought inside were local drunks, dressed in seemingly good, bright and even not devoid of fashionable labels rags from the surrounding second-hand and from the dumpsters of elite houses.
If I were financing sci-fi films, I would make a rule to give out less money than you can imagine. If the creators meet the sum, keeping the idea - they are good. Even without calculating how the dollar has changed over time, the fact remains - '', 'Terminator', '', 'The Moon 2112', ', &'The machines contain a modest &b>iiii39;'ii>iii>i>ii>ii Don’t you think that a hundred million dollars worth of science fiction can’t claim to be thoughtful? The exception is, except that 'Interstellar' and even then my attitude towards it is constantly changing - from love to hate.
The condition of the problem is given - we have Neil Blomkamp. The guy shot with 'District #9' conquering everyone with a new word in special effects, and this is with a budget of $ 30 million. He knows how to shoot and draws on the computer well, but in addition, he also writes scripts for his films. And the style of his narration can be described in four words: ' I will not tell you where I look' Three feature films, and only ' District 9' I like it. He had a basis in the form of a short film, consider the material for the study of the plot. 'Elysium' but it is perceived as a hastily made and torn film, and looking at its price tag (115 million), you notice that the effect I described works.
In the year 2154, while humans plow Pandora, the Earth suffers from pollution and overpopulation. Spanish has become the second international language on par with English, police robots break their hands for sarcasm, and the rich live on the space station Elysium - with an artificial atmosphere and advanced medicine. Climbed into the chamber and special radiation treats fractures, even cancer. Poor guys are trying to illegally get to Elysium, and one of them is the main character Max (Matt Damon). After suffering a work injury that will only last him five days, Max wants to get to Elysium to escape.
The main problem of the film is no, not a question, but on whom to build a space station, if with the same success could come up with a city under the dome. The trouble 'Elysium' is that it does not correlate the scale of the action. If 'Region #9' and 'A robot named Chappie' were confined to Johannesburg alone, then here we are talking about the whole planet. But it feels like the rest of the world has gone extinct, or has moved to Los Angeles, Latin America. All spaceships with illegal aliens start from there. And if so, then Defense Secretary Elysium Delacourt (Jodie Foster) is long overdue for such a worthless job. The station has no protective field, no one controls the flight of illegal shuttles, and those spacecraft that fly in can be shot down from a rocket launcher from Earth. Yes, from one scene where Agent Kruger ("Charlto Copley"), resembling a bum in an exoskeleton, launches four small rockets and they overcome thousands of kilometers, having overtaken the shuttles, Stephen Hawking himself would be outraged. By the way, Agent Kruger is all Secretary Delacourt has to offer under the air defense program. It would have been better in this film was Robert Englund with a clawed glove, it would also look caricatured.
Class inequality is one of the outmoded archetypes in science fiction films, so Elysium 39 could have been doomed to success if it had been released in the 1990s. Not enough for us, history is also overloaded with timekeeping in an hour and 40 minutes. Here you and the coup, which committed Delacour, and the memories of Max, and the story of the friend of Max Frey (Alice Braga), whose daughter dies of leukemia. The whole film is built as if Neil Blomkamp got behind the wheel, let go of the clutch, the car rolled and he stupidly does not know how to stop. Against the background of sharp jumps between the characters, you forget about significant shoals of the picture like an exoskeleton, which is screwed to a living body. As an example, medical capsules – how does this work? With all the flight of fantasy, I don't think that if a man's head is torn apart, put him in this barochamber, he'll live. I can give an example of the alpha gel scene from the second'Kingsman'a' - a similar moment to the resurrection of the character after ' brain removal' But 'Kingsman' was focused on laughter and entertainment of the viewer, and here we claim a serious dystopia.
The only positive aspect is 'Elysium' in addition to the qualitative special effects - Sharlto Copley. He played a clichéd psychopathic villain - but the way he does it eclipses Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, whose characters at some point don't care. Otherwise 'Elysium: Paradise is not on Earth' is a licked Hollywood passerby who is trying to claim something more. Blomkamp himself admitted that the film was a failure.
The moment you don't understand why Ellisium Paradise
After a fresh look at the Neil Blomkamp film 'Elysium: Paradise is not on Earth' seems a very familiar copy of the manga 'Gunnm'. The same heavenly city (albeit a comic station) where the rich and successful live. The same impossibility for the common man to enter this heavenly paradise. Total devastation and decline of the quality of life on earth. Huge dumps. The protagonist who unwittingly became a cyborg. Even the main villain, using not only a weapon but also a sword.
We are facing a distant future in which the main protagonist Max tries to lead a decent lifestyle. He works in the factory and is on conditional probation. You can make money easy, but he's long since done with crime and tries to be a good citizen. After receiving a lethal dose of radiation, he knows that he can only be cured in the city of Elysium & #39. Only there is medicine and technology that is not on earth. Having made a decision, Max will go to this space station, along the way recruits the team of their rebel squad.
Viewing history 'Elysium' shows that the additional material to the film that goes an hour or more is much more exciting than the resulting final product. Watching a movie, how the scenery was built, how sound and music were created, editing was used, how the actors interacted - much more exciting because there is only one meaning - to show how the movie turned out. After all, the film most of the time shows the familiar atmosphere of the slums of South Africa, which we saw in District 9. Devastation will be a mandatory companion of the protagonist. The director tries to show that the year is 2154, but at the same time fully preserves the atmosphere of the present. Only combat robots, a city in the sky and some modifications of weapons tell the viewer that after all, this is not a distant future.
Love for detail and entourage immediately distinguishes the film. You see how different the worlds shown are in heaven and on earth. It immediately catches the eye that the shooting on the ground was performed without the use of a stedicam. Heavenly beauty is filmed in a smoother and more cinematic style. The quality of the decorations and weapons allows you to assess the degree of immersion and convey a sense of style. Neil Blomkamp can't say no to that. The acting work of Matt Damon and Charlto Copley very well conveys the mood of the characters. Secondary roles are also good, but not so expressive.
The main claim is that the director creates a very good picture and forgets about the development of the story. In the previous film ' District #9' the main character goes through a huge transformation and the viewer with him plunges into the inner world, he first looks at everything from one side of the barricades and then understands what is happening from the other side. Becoming a hostage of circumstances, the protagonist unwittingly saving himself, turns out to be the savior of the world, or at least the key to salvation. In 'Elysium' there is no reason why we should worry about the fate of the protagonist Max. We are not familiar with his story or his circumstances. The fact that Max has a critical health problem does not affect us in any way. The character is tortured. When half-hearted Max is put on an exoskeleton and sent to war, there is a feeling of discomfort, just from that he is offered to perform a very important mission, saving himself and humanity. But have you ever seen a person, after a lethal dose of radiation, undergo a complex open operation and be able to conduct active combat operations? This is the first bell of logic.
The world and its structure are not revealed. Why do people with great technologies that can change the world live in the heavenly world, and the rest of us on earth in inhuman conditions? What is the author’s idea to show a different class? Are there limited resources that rich people can use? There is no answer to this question. At the same time, the heavenly city, if it is of such value to others, is in no way protected from external invasion. Where is the army of thousands of robots, which are so actively standing in the factory, if it is not in Elysium?
We get a film that, due to its scale, cannot hold the content. A completely empty and tortured story. The film is an experiment with forms that will then be used in the next work of the director ' Robot named Chappie' It is there that Neil Blomkamp will be able to implement his idea to play robots. Therefore, Elysium is perceived only as a very long ' short' from the visual effects studio in which Neil Blomkamp works.
6 out of 10
I agree with the prevailing view that this is a failed masterpiece. There are many advantages, first of all, the idea itself, although the idea of a paradise city of the future over a ravaged planet is not new. But the acute and ever-present conflict between the people and the elite is an inexhaustible subject for culture. Other advantages are also known, I will not list them, this is a solid Hollywood standard.
But the minuses are more interesting. Of course it's a leaky scenario. There's too much illogical in the movie. The ending is presented as a happy ending, while the problems are not solved. Or is this station so wonderful that it will feed tens of billions? Then why didn't the elite help the countrymen before? And if it's just out of harm and social Darwinism, why not just exterminate the population? And if conscience does not allow, to establish totalitarian control over the Earth? Why is a man who can break into a station not in her government and has to sell this know-how to weird types?
These questions can go on for a long time. The main thing is that humanity is not saved, because one percent will not fit on the station. The new president was a criminal with socialist habits. In reality, this has already happened and ended in gulags. Unfortunately, the film does not give adequate answers, as everything goes to this. That overpopulation would lead to an endless crisis. By the way, the heroine is not sorry at all. I'm against Social Darwinism, but I don't understand how you can have a baby in a world as horrible as this one.
In short, the authors simply did not pull such a project. The movie is more good than it sucks. But this naiveté to take everything and divide it all looks ridiculous. I myself do not know what had to be done, for the possibilities of the station have not been unlocked, the only mysterious field, with the help of cold fusion, healing almost all wounds and diseases. But generally normal.
The post-apocalyptic future is naturally bleak and dim. The entire earthly elite moved to the space station long ago 'Elysium' and enjoys the wonders of progress and political intrigue. And on a choking Earth in a dilapidated Los Angeles, disabled hero Max, able to walk only with the help of an exoskeleton, undertakes to help the guerrillas get to the station and make its benefits available to everyone. Naturally, the station will send a cool killer and begin a brutal post-apocalyptic action movie. That's it. No surprises. The second ' District 9' Neil Blomkamp did not succeed - however, such a task was clearly not. The task was to make a standard but strong action movie in the scenery of sterile high-tech and littered ruins. Blomkamp coped with this task: the movie turned out to be standard, but strong. Really good actors, especially Matt Damon in the lead role - he really got a cool guy overcoming his illness. Good and villains - the insidious Minister of Defense Delacourt and the cruel killer she sent are no different from many of her film colleagues, but at least they are played qualitatively. The plot is also standard before yawning, but written in good faith, without plot holes and nonsense. Even about genre stamps do not want to talk, although the plot consists of them. Here they work, and do not appear for a tick. Blomkamp is a good director, and even such a passerby in his hands turns, if not into a masterpiece, but at least into a good movie in which battered moves and characters do not annoy.
But with the picture, everything is worse: destroyed and overgrown ruins in weak sepia and white corridors ' Elysium' not at all impressive. Yes, the Earth and the station do look like two different worlds, but what good is it if they are not remembered? The film has no memorable style, except for the exoskeleton of the main character. But one such chip is not enough, and nothing else the film in this regard can not offer. What could be sadder than a good movie that is mediocre? Action is also not particularly happy - it is not enough, and it lacks coolness. At least that’s what it looks like.
Elysium & #39 is not a bad movie. But even to the end it can not be called good. It's normal. It has everything that should be in the blockbuster post-apocalypse and nothing more. Not a masterpiece, but at least qualitatively done. Not annoying, but I want more.
"Elysium: Paradise is not on Earth is a very uneven film that I personally liked.
After “District N9” from the young director Neil Blomkamp expected another accomplishment. Pictures that will cement his title of new master of world cinema. It is not surprising that, in principle, a good film eventually received not the best ratings of the press and audience: inflated expectations were rarely justified. With this film, the story has developed exactly so, which is largely unfair: the film deserves a much more detached view of itself.
"Elysium" is a stylistic continuation of the previous Blomkamp tape.
From the visual narrative side, the tape is extremely overloaded. If the last time the style and manner of the director prompted the script, now the aesthetic side depended solely on the desires of the director. And his desires were very simple: to find his style away from the plot and its development. Find such an international way of shooting, thanks to which he will be immediately recognizable in the frame. In terms of setting the environment and scenery, I believe that Blomkamp just succeeded: his heterogeneous technocracy, combining the dirt of the social bottoms and the top of political cardinals, at first glance fills the action with an atmosphere that is in the past and in this picture. Entourage is a dystopia, built morally by a rotting minority on the bones of a physically decaying majority, perfectly outlined by Blomkamp’s manner of tying his films to the time he talks about through staged chronicles, all-documentary footage, television reports, and so on. This study gives the film liveliness, makes it more voluminous: all of it - the world, its history and characters.
Which in the case of Elysium is a problem. The fact is that it is difficult to empathize with the hero who, contrary to all the laws of logic, exists in the world of despotism, manages to joke in those life situations where it is not necessary to do this and, most interestingly, he himself knows it well. This makes Max (Matt Damon) a complete idiot, although he is not, as further development of the plot tells us. And here comes the reason for these troubles: you need triggers for this very development. This behavior is the trigger. Unskillful, weak, strange, but allowing to develop the plot. And that’s the kind of triggers the movie is full of. Maybe Neil Blomkamp just didn’t have time to finalize the script of the tape, which he wrote much less “District”, which is why it turned out so clumsy. But it still happened, and so showed the viewer. And it's pretty weird. After all, the picture definitely deserves much more careful analysis for the personal growth of its own history. Why? It's simple - the theme on which the film communicates.
Elysium is a film imbued with the idea of the value of any human life to the last line of the script. In introducing socialism into the pragmatic world of immoral monopoly, Blomkamp does not say what is worse and what is better. It combines two ideologies, giving birth to something left behind, instead focusing on something else: the value of human life in any world, even where the person himself and his abilities are relegated to the background. And it tells you why: because of the inherent self-sacrifice. In view of the higher emotions that everyone is able to experience, because of the ability to give their lives for the benefit of others, and at the same time feeling complete satisfaction with the current situation. In this regard, "Elysium" is a great movie.
It's not bad at all.
The absurd logical sequences of actions of the heroes, a vinaigrette of slow-mo and strange camera sketches that fail in their jumps from a clear geometry to the smoothness of the lines of the “golden section”, cannot make the tape an incomparable thing. They didn't. They made the movie worse - yes. But not removed the main thing: his ideas and styles.
The contrast of dying urbanism and the gloss of high-tech pomp for me personally is a balm for the soul. This is what perfectly highlights the basic conflict between poverty and wealth, human and material. It is all hyperbolized, the whole world of the film is hyperbolized. Does it make it worse? It all depends on the viewer.
It is impossible not to wrinkle your nose from the strange decisions caused by the need to continue the plot, which are acupuncturely introduced into a full high-quality staged (especially from the point of view of computer graphics) action narrative. But the big question is whether these brief moments will overshadow the impressions of the film, its style and idea. The question is subjective and I have given myself the answer. I advise you to do the same.
"Elysium: Paradise not on the Earth will fly to space at the cost of life"
Imagine a world full of peace and quiet. A world in which tight control reigns and every emergency is nothing more than training. Would you like to live in such a kingdom? Sure, no question, right? But as you know, every bright side has its opposite. In this case, the other side of this world is chaos and ugliness. The center of the state is dominated by the struggle for life, and control of society and civilization is considered a gift of God. Few people want to live in such conditions, but there is not enough place in paradise to provide it to everyone. Remember these words, for in the near future it will be necessary for society to do this: to divide the sides into two parts for its own good. But what about those who are at the bottom of the ocean? And what do the “lucky” do with those who are trying to get out of the bottom? Neil Blomkamp, who loved his native penates, tried to show a small part of the further life of mankind. Do you think this is all fiction based on a two-hour movie? Anyway. Each of the creations carries a meaning, which will be remembered by everyone who looks at his picture. Only then, in the future, remembering any of his films, we will be able to say the only thing: “He was right, damn it...” Each new film makes you wait for the novelty of a beautiful director not because the movie is shot interestingly and qualitatively, but because it will contain a wise meaning. In this case, Neil is good, no questions asked.
The earth is now a landfill, not a planet. In the year 2154, when technology reached its peak, humanity is rapidly moving into the rank of “scum”. Machines replace everything - they are idolized, they are needed, everyone wants them. “The process of survival will soon begin... A process in which the strongest of the weakest survive. The winners will be made of cannon fodder, which will be controlled from time to time. Everyone who at least somehow proves himself is lucky, but in time he will also be waiting for the fate that enslaved the oppressed, that is, death - this is how you can describe the future life of earthlings. Alas, the time when the elite of society will finally step into the working class will come too soon. “Elysium” clearly shows what and how we will do after a complete reformation in society.
Elysium. A real paradise for residents. Have you dreamed of a place where everything you want is available? Of course. What does Elysium mean to their inhabitants and inhabitants of the Earth? Heaven and earth are not comparable. Everyone wants to be on this station, but not everyone. The elite use people as pawns and they can't do anything about it. On Elysium sits the same leadership that counts as its inhabitants. Their main desire from earthlings is that workers continue to bring resources for the operation of the space station. And what about the people themselves and their health is a trifle that will die with their own body. The rich have long lost the feeling when compassion somehow torments their conscience. From now on they have no worries, only personal prerogatives.
The Elysium of 2154 is a cross between the technologically evolving world and the post-apocalypse of survival. Earth, on the verge of destruction, is experiencing the last roots laid down by mankind long ago. Naturally, as is usually the case, looters and other influential people try to get the benefit of all this, which is good for them. Neil Blomkamp, first of all, wanted to show the conflict between two layers of society, which will be relevant in every time. The Earth has no future - the elite of society have long understood this, which is why Elysium was created. But at the same time, Neal wanted to emphasize that status equality can not only exist for the poor and the rich. In the latter, conflicts of equality arise quite often, which sometimes leads to lynching. From a philosophical point of view, the main antagonists of the picture, namely, the hired killer Kruger (Charlto Copley) and the state official Delacour (Jodie Foster) are people with their own goals. For them, the affairs of politicians are not so important. Their concerns are theirs. Both characters want personal interests not to be violated by anyone, so they strive to eliminate them in any way. There is a difference between wishful thinking and madness.
Kruger, aka "The most interesting character of the picture." Charlto Copley, an amateur of Neil Blompkamp, participates in almost all projects of his compatriot. This time, a native of Johannesburg got the role of a former military, and now hired assassin, hired by the highest ranks of the state. Kruger is the Joker of DC Comics. As a manic killer, Kruger finds a goal that makes him crazy. It's not the kind of madness that thins the brain. The professional has a rival who can seriously play on his biography. Charlto's character is interesting to watch not because of the disclosure of his personality, but because of the actor himself. Being involved in the process, Charlto shows a decent sociopath play. By the end of the tape, you realize that he is tired of foreign things (politics, officials). He wants to achieve his goal, no matter how he does it.
Minister Delacourt, aka "A woman with her worries, strong on the outside, but timid on the inside." Jodie Foster is similar to the previous character in common interests. At first, one goal is important for each of them, but as the script develops, the characters realize that there is no future between them. The actors don’t have any joint episodes (only one, to be exact), but the chemistry established between them is commendable. Jodie is a kind of boss, requiring subordinates to report every minute. Foster is a real ace of his business. She's got a strong sense of teamwork, which is why she's done well in her role. Sometimes you even think about its presence in the frame. There was too little of it...
The verdict. Decided to watch the movie for action, along the way enlisting popcorn? Please, your case. But if at the end of the picture you still do not understand the essence for which Neil set out to create it, then you are a fool. Elysium: Paradise is Not on Earth was not created for fun and a powerful kintz. The tape contains a philosophical essence, which is very easy to understand. The question is, "Can you do that?" Okay, fine. No, keep eating popcorn, it works.
Best Picture Scene: A Joint Episode of Charlto Copley and Jodie Foster A scene that explains Kruger’s torment all around him. What is remarkable is the episode - in a hired killer, many people can recognize themselves when the surrounding situation annoys them.
Activate Kruger.
“Elysium: Paradise” or “Elysium” in the literal translation of the original “Elysium”.
I remember a good advertising campaign in 2013 about this film, and the desire to get acquainted with it arose even then, but all in good time.
The world is divided into two territories: a harsh and merciless Earth with diseases and wars, and Elysium, a real paradise, where the elite of society enjoys all the charms of life. Among the earthlings drags his miserable existence of a simple hard worker, in the past a criminal, Max, who has to change the course of events.
Fiction is not my favorite genre, but here it is presented in a convenient and understandable light, and I personally experienced a lot of pleasure when watching Elysium: Heaven is not on Earth. There are films when watching which literally do not break away from the screen and deep down do not want that the film ended. When I watched this movie, I was overwhelmed by those feelings. Matt Damon is excellent, perfect for the role and played it flawlessly. Charlto Copley is brilliant in the role of an antagonist, such roles he always succeeded in fame, however, the Russian dubbing did not quite suit his character. But the female actor side of the film I did not like: that Alicia Braga ("Predators", "City of God"), that the winner of two Oscars Jodie Foster ("Silence of the Lambs", "The Flight Illusion"), in my opinion, the proper acting was not produced, perhaps due to the fact that their characters were not fully disclosed.
The visual component of the film, special effects, clothes, mechanical devices – from all this I received a lot of aesthetic pleasure.
I definitely recommend Elysium: “Heaven is not on earth” without exception. The film exceeded my expectations.
The rating of the film made me doubt whether to watch, but because I love fiction, I decided to look and was pleasantly surprised. I really liked the movie. So trust the ratings after that.
The society of the future shown in the film is a caustic satire on the society of the present. As they say: “It is necessary to bring insanity to the absurd to be clearer”, but judging by the estimates, the “broad viewer” did not understand this hint.
Some moments of the film just savored and I want to watch them again.
The elite of society in the most literal sense of the word is detached from the Earth and hangs in the sky like a second moon. The division of society is very clear: between those on Earth and those in the sky. To what brought the Earth, the cradle... A hint is a lesson to the good guys that if we don't come to our senses, we will. Next – more: the attitude to ordinary people as cogs and consumables. Very revealing moments of contact with robot policemen and especially with employers. What about illegal immigrants? Whatever you say, you better watch it yourself. Modern problems are exaggerated, boldly emphasized and transferred to the future (how it could be if nothing changes today). The striking contrast in lifestyle between the inhabitants of Earth and Elysium is shown in colorful detail.
Of course it's a movie - a drama. Personal drama is the hero’s self-sacrifice. And social drama is the struggle between classes of society.
Acting is on top! Matt Damon and Jodie Foster are great in their roles, and other actors are great. The plot seems to be simple: one hero changes the course of events and saves all people. But the movie looks very easy, you can say, in one breath. Special effects and all the attributes of a fantastic action movie are present in abundance.
I would say that the film is multi-layered, it has many meanings and situations that can be thought through and interpreted in different ways. With certainty:
Neil Blomkamp is a very multifaceted creator. His ideas are focused mainly on one feature, which includes moral messages, visual wrapping and breakdown into certain groups of characters involved in the plot. Wealthy segments of the population are conditionally adjacent to poor and unfavorable cities and their districts.
Conditional neighborhood implies a separate world of the rich and other wealthy people. You can draw a parallel with the real world, when not only in one country different infrastructure in most cities. Its power, contingent, and varying permissibility can spread like a disease to neighboring streets. Someone is left without light, water or food, does not have the job he wants.
The director only shows the slowdown of world systems, which do not always benefit other people. Many living conditions are not working at full capacity. Neil Blomkamp feels the line between politics and simple author's statement. His chosen fantastic stories, which he himself embodies on the screen, though simple, but extremely dramatic, filled with pain and suffering. District 9 was his boldest statement. The movie left many impressions. With a relatively modest budget for a fantastic blockbuster in the amount of thirty million dollars, thanks to the support of Peter Jackson and his studio, the masters of visual effects Weta Digital, the film came out without jokes - a masterpiece.
Elysium: Heaven Not on Earth, Blomkamp's second full-length project. The subject of flights between the ground and space stations, in fact, unused, especially given the script part of the story. When Max (Matt Damon) an ordinary hard worker, who does not dream about much, but just dreams about the stars and a beautiful person, gets into terrible trouble, which caused a deadly dose of damage to his health, only despair and unstoppable attempts to survive remain.
Blomkamp manages each time with the release of his new opus, to work out the characters to the smallest detail. There is never much question in the spirit – what motivates a hero, what motives he has, whether there is a personal tragedy, friends and marital status behind him. Any personal question can be answered. In addition to the main characters (I) in his films, other characters are gradually introduced. Each has its own meaningful use in history.
Is a man like Max capable of destroying his principles and attitude, turning it over at the last moment, or accepting it and fighting to inspire others?
From Charlto Copley turned out a frightening and formidable antagonist. In comparison with the district, a striking image of the character embodied by him. The case when the masterful acting game makes the first role to love and almost cry for the main character, and the second - to perceive as another person and the most sinister creature of the whole action.
The cast is diverse: Jodie Foster, Diego Luna, William Fichtner or Alice Braga contribute to the charisma of Elysium.
The action was great. Blood and dismemberment are full of details. The stylistics and visuals are unlike anything other than Neil Blomkamp’s films. Operator Trent Opalok (First Avenger: Confrontation) can withstand a sometimes tough pace with delicious details and exciting plans. From some frames, the adrenaline scale can jump to a high level. What came out the weakest is the soundtrack from Ryan Amon. No, the compositions are great, but in comparison with the films District 9 and, at the moment, the major work of the director, a robot named Chappie is less memorable, only a few topics press on emotions.
Elysium worked. After a while, you realize how important the film is with its ideas and unique graphics.

Max lives in a slum on Earth, but has always dreamed of going to Elysium, a city in orbit where there is no trouble or disease. One day his luck smiled and he just had to fly. As they say, be afraid of your desires or clearly formulate them.
Very mediocre film. At first, I was taken by the picture, because the picture is wow! I really liked the concept, too. And then everything began to crumble, for digging deeper, it became clear that the plot has no background and history as such. All the characters are as superficial as possible, why they are exactly the way they do it is not completely clear. It is also not clear where this order of affairs came from, and how such a life works in general: why did someone stay on Earth and someone left? Why do people on Earth live this way? Why exactly did all this happen? Why is Elysium ruled by incomprehensible personalities, one of whom is a mattress and the other a fanatical soldier? What guided the psychopathic agent who followed every command of a fanatical soldier on Earth? And so on and so forth, the list of questions and claims is very large.
In addition, the behavior of the main and not very heroes left much to be desired. They were stupid in the worst traditions of cinema, doing everything that should or should not have been done.
Very unstable and claiming high technology story is also pretty annoying. Here Max breathes again, white as snow, can not open his eyes, but nothing, we will make him an exo-skeleton, and now he jumps, breathes normally at the same time, all reflexes are sharpened, attention is focused. A miracle, not a skeleton! The way it connects to a person and everything else related to technology is childish talk, which is not very pleasant to look at.
In general, a failure in everything except the picture and the cast, and, in fact, the beginning of the film. Not recommended.
They dared to live better than us. We have to take everything from them.
Sorry for the money spent on the ticket.
As often happens in films, the hero is a beggar, a thief, but with a noble soul. The whole world lives in... below the poverty line, nobody wants to work, no one wants to change the world, but everyone is looking at the rich Buratins, who prudently self-removed far away from the lazy and uncontrollably proliferating population. All this was shown in the trailer, so not a spoiler.
Impressions from the film are extremely negative. Once again, laziness and envy are imposed on us in the role of positive qualities, and this, I must say, is already frightening.
Play actors and actresses, in general, can not be the worst, but against the background of disgusting plot somehow lost.
I do not recommend watching.

Only for my beloved Jody, she played her role qualitatively.
Probably, for people who watch dozens of blockbusters about the future of mankind, the film Elysium: Paradise is not on Earth" will seem very banal and fresh. Just like I did on the first surface view. The fact that society is divided into rich and poor, and secondly, in the majority, is already clear, not living to 2154. To shoot it was probably quite simple: you take the slums and the beggars, and on the other hand, the open space of space with its perfect Elysium. Probably, people dream of a paradise island, an oasis, a promised land will always be buried in the subconscious, when lying as a little boy and a girl, you dream that "one day you will go far, far away, where there will be ideal conditions for life." You live and the environment makes you who you are. So it was with Max (Matt Damon), who is as handsome as ever, but moments just seem that he does not understand what he is doing here. On one side of it sits the same little boy Max (Maxwell Perry Cotton) who promises to take little Frey (Valentina Giron) to Elysium. Meeting Frey (Alice Braga), who talks about her difficult life, really at first imbued with the difficult fates of the main characters. And pity Matilda (Emma Trambe), and pity the car thief Max, who is trying to get on the right path, working in the factory.
The only thing that’s really unclear is where they’ve all been, what they’ve been doing, and the plot gets clicked for moments when you can’t “feel” life. And there's this ugly feeling creeping into your soul that there's no equality for people, and never will be. On the other hand, those on the side of alleged evil pursue the same goals as those below, that is, to protect their family and loved ones at all costs. On the other hand, they are ruthless killers, without any sense of compassion, who will remove anyone who tries to enter their territory and barbarously seize it. “A ticket to Elysium is priceless,” says Spider (Wagner Moura), who is very pleasantly surprised by his charisma. Again, it is not clear how he has everything captured here, while he himself does not particularly aspire to the top. Mad Kruger ("Sharto Copley") is perhaps most remembered for his role as an antagonist, and seemed to me more confident in his abilities than the main character. Minister Delacour (Jodie Foster) has shown herself to be an “iron lady” who will stop at nothing to protect her family, but even she has given me what seems to be a weakness. Therefore, this whole performance resembles the scattered, chaotic, impulsive actions of people who run, commit some actions, while the question of life and death is so acute that peace, perhaps, no one will find either on Earth or in the supposed Paradise.
As for the picture, colors, directing Neil Blomkamp, you can put a plus. A kind of DO apocalypse, with good sound accompaniments. For a moment you think you are in a computer game like Counter Strike. Chasing, shooting, cruelty, all this is observed here in abundance, which can please the male half of humanity in particular. It was nice to see the roles of Julio (Diego Luna) and another villain famous John Carlyle (William Fichtner). But, all this flashes literally in a split second, will cause a stingy tear, and maybe a hail of tears, but it is unlikely to cause the desire to see it a second time. You don't see the difference between the lagging ships and the advanced technologies of the future, the fully robotic and automated operation of the system, in the sense that we are used to seeing it on the screen. I liked the idea that they put you in the dome and you were like, hop, and healed. But, on the other hand, there has always been the idea that man is not made to live forever. There are clearly expressed negative traits of the character of a person as such. And even if it is cruelty, it is justified, but all people strive for one thing: to survive, no matter what the cost. This is banal, and this film is another projection on this topic, which is loved to feed the modern audience. I think not everyone will like this kind of food for the mind, but what is shown in Elysium is already happening to humanity, and will not happen in some future 200 years from now.
Even before the writings of Machiavelli and the doctrines of J. Friedman, Plato spoke of the possibility of lying rulers for the benefit of the state. His State is an ideal with a cult of citizenship, where professional groups are nurtured for the best functioning of it: rulers-philosophers, guards-warriors, people-farmers. The imperfect are doomed to destruction, artificial selection.
Elysium, too, exists like a polis, in contrast to the barbarism in which the earth is immersed. Perhaps his physical remoteness is a kind of metaphor for the economic inaccessibility of the most advanced achievements for life and health for the majority of the population. The problem of “medical migrants” is not a problem in the revision of certain traditionally humanistic values of the authorities of the host countries. When would it be most effective to stop them with missiles? The picture reveals the transformation that liberal morality undergoes in the conditions of a disadvantageous situation. The previous rules and principles have been revised, although the destruction of the transport of refugees is still formally condemned. But how else can we stop all those who seek to be saved in this chosen model of development, an inverted paradise for the few? Its inhabitants are already a product of the education of a person of a chosen caste, which is noticeable by the way they treat “non-citizens”, how they accept death.
Of course, in Elysium one of the futuristic scenarios is realized, it is not without a hero who survives, as usual, in the fight against gangs and corporations in a post-apocalyptic world. But after all, the apocalypse itself may not be necessary for the apocalypse, just gradually getting worse and worse. We can assume that robotization will take many people out of employment and create an abundance of goods. It is likely that governments or corporations (the super-rich) will control the allocation of resources, people can live without hunger, but the problem of their employment remains. From this point of view, the question may arise as to the admissibility of such an uncontrolled, unoccupied, breeding population. It is becoming clear that at some point the power groups on Earth may have abused the opportunities in their hands.
The work of the hero in the factory can be attributed to artificial employment, because it seems that the work of people is not very necessary at this level of cybernetics. But rather, there is a deliberate rejection of the spread of advanced technology beyond Elysium. There are, apparently, some outdated industrial chains to occupy residents with self-sufficiency, for example: the production of robots for their own protection. We can say that these people are left in minimal conditions for life, with no special prospects, probably to quickly release the site. A planet like a big migrant camp to nowhere. In this global organization, neither residents, nor their labor, nor their possible role in the defense of the country are in demand.
After the finale, when the “fall” is committed – “paradise” is lowered to earth (or earthly, defective things burst into paradise), the question may arise: what to do with overpopulation? Who gets the power and technology? And if everyone is worthy of treatment and salvation in these conditions, where will the new life take its form? Questions about the best form of government probably arose even before the time of Plato. Oligarchy is unjust, democracy is always pregnant with tyranny, etc., the best is its State – this aristocratic Elysium, which seems to be the way out until it is realized.
Neill Blomkamp seems to have expressed everything he could say in District 9 - a really fresh and engaging film. Elysium (similar to paradise in the mythology of ancient Greece), unfortunately, turned out to be predictable and secondary, crudely mixing vulgarized utopian socialism and Christianity.
First of all, the story is predictable literally from the first minutes and, being consistent, will not disappoint, in the sense that it will not offer any unexpected plot twists, lulling with its banality. However, predictability, although a significant disadvantage, but it is not enough to negatively evaluate the film, because most of the paintings are predictable, which does not make them bad. What makes the movie “Elysium” bad is not the banality of the plot, but the vulgarity of ideas – the primitive “superposition” of the Gospel story on the main character (who dies not to transform people through truth, freedom and love, to restore their dignity, but so that the outcasts will find the “heavenly kingdom” in a completely material reading of it, similar rather to the pagan “paradise” of Islamic and Scandinavian myths), and utopian socialism, reducing its program only to “select and divide”, leaving behind the answers to questions – and who will have nothing to do after? From above, this vulgarity is flavored with a raid of a disgusting cyberpunk and a rather sluggish militant.
In general, after watching, ironically recalling the plot and the shaved head of Matt Damon, I want to mentally attach him a sharp beard and make him exclaim in a carte voice: "Comrades! The workers’ and peasants’ revolution, the necessity of which the Bolsheviks always spoke, has been accomplished.
This film was watched by the whole family in order to pass another winter evening.
The choice fell on Elysium because of Matt Damon in the title role.
What's the plot? The world is divided into two classes: the rich class lives on an artificial satellite of the Earth - Elysium, which has everything for a comfortable (and immortal) life; the poor class, respectively, is on a densely populated and environmentally unsafe Earth. Having no guaranteed rights and freedoms, the earthlings work hard for the ruling class - the inhabitants of Elysium. 100% effective medical care can only be obtained at Elysium, but it is not easy to get there. The film tells the story of an earthling named Max, who is trying to recover from a deadly disease, hitting Elysium. By coincidence, a revolution occurs.
Despite the fact that the idea is quite interesting, the film turned out to be a typical Hollywood consumer. Yes, the visual component in the film is excellent, the cast is not bad, but a stupid script, made as if under a blueprint, reduces all efforts to create a good science fiction film to nothing. It is clear that the films of this genre require the presence of spectacular scenes, rapidly developing action, but in their desire to fit into the “format” the creators of this creation made the film too superficial. The reasons that caused such a deep gulf between the inhabitants of the Earth and Elysium are not shown, the characters of the characters – neither the main character, nor the “revolutionary”, nor the main antagonist – they mindlessly run with weapons in their hands, destroying everything that comes in the way. In fact, the plot of the struggle of the exploited against the exploiters is eternal, the whole history of mankind represents this struggle, but the film on this topic turned out to be boring, banal and predictable.

Social fantastic action-drama "Elysium": Heaven is not on Earth, really not a very logically calibrated sample of science fiction. Plus, with the construction of society, he has enough joints, as well as with the political system described in the plot. But, despite his blunders in the logic of the characters’ behavior, the scripts (sudden grand pianos from bushes, there will be), as well as the numerous appearance of all the clichés of stories such as “I do not want to die”, he still looks peculiar, even gives reflection on the social mechanism of society.
And even if to you all its deep meaning seems to be an empty sound, you will still be amazed by the visual view of the indescribable cosmic beauty of the world of Elysium. The main thing, before you, is one of the few author's things created in the studio field, which is trying to break up the commercial fetters, from a person who gave an actual story about alien discrimination in South Africa. After all, seeing Neil Blomkamp in the director's chair, you naturally realize that the legs of Elysium grew from District N9.
Tui, same locations, same slums, one actor from that movie (Sharlto Copley), same introduction to the plot. But! Elysium: Heaven is not on Earth is fixed on the problem, specifically the people themselves, and not the aliens, expressing the meaning of the saying, “Man is a wolf to man.” Blomkapm tried to produce what Wimer had tried before him to be an "Equilibrium," to deduce the same idea, combining aggressive fights, chases, political intrigue, and the question of donation.
Hopefully in the future, and despite his rather silly yet funny Robot Named Chappy, Neil will be more experienced. Its potential is comparable to that of the genius Ridley Scott, and I very much hope that in the future I will (hopefully) see from him a solid, true author’s fantasy film of universal scale.
Historically, all of Neil Blomkamp’s films are doomed to be compared to his first feature-length film, District 9. As always, they remain in his shadow. Although, if you look at the truth, this shadow is actually not so big.
Elysium really doesn’t reach the level of District 9, and its problems are even more obvious than in the previous film. There are even obvious clichés from the category “you were born for a great purpose”, which Blomkamp had not seen before. Moreover, if “District” gave poor ground for reflection, then Neil’s second film does not cope with this task. The only semantic load that may be deposited in your memory is the “fairy tale of a surricate”, and even then it is unlikely.
However, it is still a film soaked in Blomkampovshchina. Everything is in place - social inequality, dirt, robots, mercenaries and gangsters with arguments. Especially from the visual finds of the film, it is worth noting the tuning Nissan GT-R and the aircraft, made in the style of Bugatti Veyron - very cool.
Yes, it was difficult for Blomkamp to make this film differently than he originally intended, because both Ninja and Eminem turned down the lead role. But in the end it turned out, albeit not outstanding, but has a face movie. It’s hard to fall in love with the plot and characters, but it’s easy to fall in love with his Blomkamp setting. And this gives enough value to the film, not to put an end to it.

Is it possible to watch this movie in the 21st century? Workers' revolt? Are they fighting for their lives?
If he is not considered exclusively from a revolutionary point of view, one can still notice a more modern interpretation: the psychology of the refugee, his desire to escape from his abandoned village and partake in that better life. This is painfully relevant.
You can still see the connotation of the struggle for their right to life, because everyone has it, or not?
But all these interpretations are vulgar. One is prettier and nauseating than the other.
Today, there is more black and cynical reason. The callousness of the century.
Therefore, the film can save only one thing - the admission that it is a mockery of all this liberal whining.
The quality of the plot, of course, will not improve, but some claim will be overlooked.
It must be stated bluntly: “This is a spit in the face of the working people and the suffering emigrants. That's what we wanted.
I immediately say I did not watch the trailers and I was not interested in the project before watching it and I try not to do such nonsense. And I was in the cinema by accident, I thought I would sit, eat, sleep and successfully go out. But I had to see this masterpiece.
Starting with Foster, her character is clearly not for her. It immediately caught my eye. If two-thirds of the film she was trying to pull the role, the key word tried, then it was already funny. When she was lying in the closet with the nurse, before leaving, she reminded me of a well-known meme (when a guy sits at the table he is pulled a glass, and he extends a gesture of “stop”).
Damon does not fit into the genre of fiction at all, I will not even write anything. Especially in this role.
But Copley was surprised, really did not expect that he could play an antagonist like this. Respect. Still, I think he should play characters like in Team A.
I don’t remember the others.
And of course the movie itself. Let's skip the story. No, of course it is there, the introduction and not getting to the middle you can even say that interesting and sometimes intriguing, but nevertheless it is a drain, guys. If only they changed and worked the final, but it is too late to drink Borjomi.
Toli Neal got hit in the head, or I didn't understand him. Of course, he can put special effects, he had to shoot Max Payne. But with logic, something went wrong. The first and last thing that made me happy was... AK in conjunction with the collimator sight of the 22nd century, looks like a gun of course sexy, but it was necessary that the casting passed AEK971 would be epic. Well, I will never cease to fit on falling cartridges, especially when it is still well served.
Well, all the good stuff is over, and then file after file starts. Ever since Fichtner started commenting on what he sees through the starlet window, I personally fell out. And I know the exoskeleton is cool, but it looked like a grandfather kit from Auchan, and Damon was like a clown in it. I was sitting in the facepalm emoji pose for two minutes when I saw this stamp from Neal, this is when the leader of hackers part-time astronauts as technically as a spy from the '70s quietly attaches a bug to Damon's shoulder. The handle. Not only that he stitched it already that the plume sticks out of the back of the head, but also the bug planted, only here the bug as from a fairy tale of some, and not from the 22nd century, the size of 5 rubles and for some reason with neon light music) face ... palm.
A separate epic deserves the eLizium itself, this space citadel, almost any muchachos after work when he fires kebabs can take a can of beer to sit in a starlet and spike with a cry of “healthy, guys, but here I am” on the lawn to some major in the citadel, run there, then run to someone in the house to lie down in the solarium for a quick restoration of the dnc and then he is deported back to the ground, and the next day if he does not need to do this fun again. The final fight is also draining, it would be better to finish with a gunshot at Neal's. After Bourne, you can't look at a hand-to-hand like that without tears. By the way, where did the muchachos get the leptop? (when one exoskeleton tried to throw off another exoskeleton with more chrome power boosters). At the end I caught the tension and thought that they are now blowing up the whole botanical garden, it will fall to the ground and roll all the pressure on the city of the fallen Mexican angels and then it will come to me literally why the name of the Sabj.
Nevertheless, Neil is good in terms of special effects, for his money, the film visually looks great (except for the exoskeleton and the final battle). But the atmosphere is incomprehensible, the scale is not felt, the feeling that on earth there are only 60 people hanging out, and on the citadel at all no more than 12.
As an entertaining film, I advise everyone as something more for an amateur.
3 points for a close-up “shutter platoon” on an AK-type system in slow-mo mode.
2 points per Copley game.
And of course, the score for the explosion of a grenade half a meter from the face of the skull.
