Premature sounds of obstinate saxophones, drowned out by the cries of fashion and drowning in tinsel and confetti
Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann re-enters film lovers in the atmosphere of an unrestrained, but completely fake celebration of life. Luhrmann paints a surprisingly lively and solid picture of America of the 20s.
Young financier Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire) settles in the town of West Egg near New York, whose silence is broken only by noisy parties regularly rolled in the estate of his neighbor - Mr. Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). Few people saw Gatsby himself: ripping away huge money and turning his house into a magnet for the entire surrounding bohemian, the owner prefers to remain in the shadows. It makes it easier to peer into the green lighthouse on the other side of the bay. This lighthouse illuminates the house of Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) - the lost love of Mr. Gatsby, for the return of which a grand plan is conceived, a part of which Nick will become.
Looking back through the murky periscope of time, Luhrmann paints a surprisingly lively and coherent picture of 20s America. From the dazzling outfits of starlets to the plagued fringes of industrial New York, moving strictly in the canvas of literary material, the director stops our gaze at the smallest and most revealing details. But you can immerse yourself in the era only with your eyes - for the musical accompaniment are those who hide behind the snow-white porters Jay-Z, Beyonce, Lana Del Rey and other stars of the current rotation. The melodies and rhythms of modern pop help this salon drama to accelerate to the speed of current Hollywood, going to the new Gatsby rather for the benefit. The same technique Baz used in his antichrestomatic reading of Romeo and Juliet, but here the contrast is even stronger, even more aggressive.
No one can beat DiCaprio. Otherwise, however, genre conventions are not undermined. Moreover, it is extremely important for Luhrmann to keep the feeling of accurate, up to direct visual quotes (for example, the key image for the novel is carefully transferred from the poster of Dr. Ecklberg) remake of the 1974 film with Robert Redford in the title role. Except for the high-speed voyages of heroes from New York to West Egg and back, “The Great Gastby” of the 2013 model is the same hermetic dialogue story, entirely based on the skill of actors. No one succeeds in overplaying DiCaprio, and it is not required: Gatsby’s egocentrism is spelled out by Fitzgerald’s pen, and Leo lives this Benifis with the writer’s glorified “smile of inexhaustible encouraging power.”
However, it is the desire to catch up with three birds with one stone - to please connoisseurs of the original book source, fans of the film with Radford and at the same time bring the next generation to cinemas - ultimately turns into a problem for the director. If Gatsby believes that he can bring back the past, then Luhrmann will not refuse to embrace the immense. He can't do it. Having gained speed, but as if frightened to splash the author’s morality, on the final turn he noticeably slows down. The ending of almost a three-hour story is cautiously classic - in the last half an hour the action visibly loses its pulse: there are no more flirtations with angles and colors, rap singing gives way to a symphony orchestra. Gatsby-picture Luhrmann is buried much earlier than Gatsby-hero.
“Soft when it is necessary to be tougher, and tough when it is necessary to give in” – formulated somewhat later Fitzgerald’s main claim to the youth elite, Baz Luhrmann not only does not camouflage, but also paraphrases in all sharpness. The surface of the pool, in which the drama happens in the final scene, is a mirror in which it will be useful to look at both those who are burning through life right now and those who have already crossed the line of careless youth.
“I knew it was a big mistake for someone like me to fall in love.”
One of my favorite movies. A film about the formation and destruction of an extraordinary personality, about love that changes a person, about betrayal and the value of real people. A film with deep problems, rooted in the original book and forcing you to return to this story over and over again.
The film is magically beautiful, and it put the director at fault, they say that it turned out not a film, but a fairy-tale fireworks display. But I think there are two reasons for this. The first is this story about a bohemian, a bohemian living, if you look at it through the eyes of a poor layman Nick Carraway, exactly as in a fairy tale. This vision in principle coincides with the attitude to the rich elite of Fitzgerald, at least in the early period of his work. And the second, in my opinion, is the ideal background for luxurious parties, dazzling courtships and subsequent tragic events, emphasizing that material wealth with spiritual poverty is not the key to a happy life.
I loved Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance. To feel so deeply and play so heartfeltly the inner conflict that torments Gatsby is so magnificent to embody the image of a noble gentleman. In general, in my view, Gatsby should have been something like that. In fact, the performance of each actor in this film at an unusually high level, believe and observant Tobby McGuire, and timid Kerry Milligan, and arrogant Joel Edgerton, and bitchy Isla Fisher, and her downtrodden husband Jason Clark, and all the other actors.
And of course, one cannot mention the main feature of almost any Baz Luhrmann film - about music that incredibly modernizes this story, patches the gap in time between a modern viewer and a resident of New York in the 20s. The music not only stunningly conveys the atmosphere of reckless Gatsby parties, but also the rhythm of the big city, the tear on the brink of disaster and the feeling of hopelessness and hopelessness that appears after the tragedy.
Another of Baz Luhrmann’s favorite tricks – narration in the narrative – doesn’t make the film heavier, but rather naturally allows Nick Carraway to tell the story of his old friend, while also giving a contrast between this hero 10 years ago and the moment he begins to record the story, which adds extra meaning to this film, showing what an imprint it left on the observer.
In my opinion, this is a piercing story with a deep conflict, reliably both in terms of the plot and in terms of the emotional experiences of the characters transmitted on the screen.

I watched the movie for the first time in 2014 and I wanted to read the book. I followed her to the library, but it turned out that the book was in my hands, and it was time for her! That says a lot about the painting.
I am sure that almost all people have encountered and know what unhappy or unrequited love is. It's painful and hard. However, it takes several weeks, months, and lets go. Man is free and open again. But sometimes something goes wrong, and the condition turns into pathology, turning into a painful obsession with another person. Absolutely irrational state, close to severe drug addiction and withdrawal, which turns the life of its carrier into hell. And it can last for years or even decades. It's a time when you build your own cities out of castles in the air, dissolve in your fantasies. Over the years, you create such a pure and perfect image in your dreams that you refuse to see reality, which frankly does not reach the image. You're endlessly alone, even at the loudest party. You don’t see or notice anyone because it pales in comparison to her, the dream. This is no longer love, but obsession. When you put together a photo of her, you keep sheets of paper where she wrote something with her hand, you keep a strand of her hair and smell it, you shake when you hear her voice. When no reasonable argument is heard, when you want to possess an object no matter what, even if it does not want it at all. When you cut many years out of your life, constantly watching it from the sidelines and wanting it with every synapse and neuron. And these thoughts, I'm going to get rich, and I'm going to buy it with my guts, and I'm going to dip my face in gold, and it's going to be mine like a cute one. Now, if you haven't had that, you can't fully experience this movie.
It is beautiful and how accurately it conveys everything written above. Especially at Gatsby's first party, when the hotter the fun and the bigger the crowd, the more you feel what's on his mind at that moment. And it's not so much the Great Gatsby as the Great DiCaprio. A man who should have had a bunch of Oscars. And in general, all the actors exceeded the plan - each fully revealed his image. Arrogant rich bastard Tom, whom you hate from the very first scene, the weak-willed and weak-willed Daisy, who could not appreciate what she faced, wanted only new emotions for herself and to give a walking husband, and who, frightened by the consequences, gave the back as soon as it took a serious turn, Jordan, the same part of the arrogant aristocracy, who wants only to get pleasure at any cost, and Nick is a decent and humble guy, the only one who could see and appreciate the depth of Gatsby’s personality. In general, a stunning holiday film, bright, melodic, glamorous, like Pina Colada in a neon glass with a cocktail umbrella, but tragic from beginning to end, brilliantly shot and played.
Gatsby, a great dreamer, an unhappy romantic, who is at a stage where it is impossible to determine whether the emptiness in the soul due to the fact that she is not in your life, or her image, is simply the most convenient and easy way to fill this emptiness. Everything is so interconnected that it is inseparable from each other. And there is another good idea - whatever the marriage of convenience, and that there are people not kept together, but for so many years they have become a family and break it is almost impossible even for Gatsby.
It is a purely American story, imbued with an American mentality and approach to life. We, in the Russian classics, also raised similar topics. One of the most famous is the Grenade Bracelet. But there the main character is a pathetic and insignificant worm, the maximum of what he is capable of - quietly suffer in his kennel and sometimes write snotty letters. It's so big! Such power. Does Gatsby cause pity and squeamishness? His noble bohemian opponents, yes. But not him.
I looked at it yesterday and was even more excited.
I have long said – take classical literature and do not change anything – shoot as it is written. There are also ready-made masterpieces!
After watching the Great Gatsby, there is a double impression: it is clear that a lot of effort was spent on the film. Excellent acting, an extremely unusual display of America of the 20s, a good technical side, once again emphasizing the other advantages of the film. But there is one BUT that crosses out all the numerous advantages of the picture: it is not one whole film, but two separate works sewn into one.
At the beginning, after a short introduction, we can first watch an excellent entertaining film: parties, energetic music, a lot of people in different outfits, alcohol, fast cars, etc. However, then all this suddenly stops, the very crowds of people, liters of alcohol and music disappear abruptly, and now we see a rather serious chamber drama, completely opposite in tone to the first half of the picture. And this is the main problem of the Great Gatsby: it is made up of two completely different parts. As already noted, all components of Gatsby are made with diligence and do not cause rejection: DiCaprio, Maguire and Edgerton delight in any film, whether it is bad or good, and as part of the trio in any case make a picture worthy of viewing, I Can't Stop, A Little Party Never Killed Nobody and other compositions create the right mood, although sometimes they do not correspond to the time period taken, the design of costumes, environments and others, but each of them is not sufficiently open to enjoy them all to a sufficient degree.
The film could have been one of the best films of 2013 if the authors had prioritized it correctly. Unfortunately, it didn't work out.
8/10 in the first half of the film, giving a feeling of a real holiday, 9/10 in the second half, making you really empathize with the characters, the overall score of the whole picture, unfortunately, only 6.5/10.
'Gatsby believed in the green light, the light of an incredible future of happiness, which moves away every year'
Gatsby turned his life into an art, a theatrical play with a sad ending, which he himself invented. Indeed, even in his youth, he gave up his life and came up with a new himself - Jay, Jay Gatsby. Literally created himself from scratch, assembled himself from his ideals and skillfully performed his role in his life, which he turned into a picture. And Daisy, well, he must have been in love with Daisy herself, but he still loved his dream, the image he created and the green light. It is so romantic and beautiful to live and believe that one day you will reach the light, reach, but this day is yet to come. But one day that day came - and the light was not so green, and Daisy is not so beautiful, a dream too close to reality. But it is true, it is a tragic truth of his life that the real action did not reach Daisy’s dreams, she could not reach her, since there is nothing more beautiful than what a person can accumulate in the depths of his imagination.
The meaning of his life is hope, waiting, creating an image. During the film, I want to go up to Jay and shake his hand. All of it excites me, an extraordinary man who has achieved everything himself, whose points of vulnerability are so beautiful, especially in those moments when he could not utter a word when he learned about the meeting with Daisy, he ran away - a child lives in him who believes in a miracle that is not poisoned by the poison of society.
His murder is actually a pardon. In the Middle Ages, when a person suffered from torture, it was considered to pardon him so that he would not suffer. So, that shot, the second before the greatest disappointment of his life was a pardon, he died thinking the call was from Daisy. If he knew that he did not, then the meaning of his life and dreams would instantly collapse.
39: This house and everything in it is a set, and Gatsby does not exist. . . ' A tragic, but beautiful truth, but behind every work of art there is a lot of pain.
So, probably the only time the film helped us understand the meaning of the book better, because it was paid attention to all the little things, conveyed the incredible atmosphere of the time, and selected the music that beckons us to that story.
How long and tedious it has been to monitor ratings, read reviews and listen to other people’s opinions about this film, including even friends and acquaintances. All as one strongly recommended Gatsby, claiming how wonderful this film is, but in fact - a cute picture in which I could not really see anything.
I am extremely disappointed, because the trailer, descriptions, and in general, the overall atmosphere of the film were much more charming than the reality that emerged.
Undoubtedly, the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio in the film for many is a guarantee of success, but if you, for example, are not a fan of his, and evaluate the film only on the basis of a personal (and in no case not biased) opinion to him, then here he will not surprise you. Throughout the whole picture, I wanted to say one thing incessantly: replays. It is incredible that such a talented actor as DiCaprio looked so playful and sweet in the role of Gatsby, it caused a wave of indignation for me, as it did not look as it should have been, and completely not as the viewer would like.
Next, let’s examine the lady of the heart – Daisy, played by Cary Mulligan. I wouldn’t say I wasn’t in the mood, on the contrary. She expected much more from this actress, she pinned her hopes on her. Alas, no miracle happened. If Leo in such roles looks more organic, then Carey enters into an involuntary stupor. I would really like to believe her character Daisy, to convince myself of the sincerity of her game, but I can not, it is not in my power.
A pleasant moment was Toby Maguire (Nick), who still retired to a certain distance from the role in Spider-Man, came to a more decent level. Not to say that it was brilliantly executed, but the hopes of the audience and their subjective assessment fully justify.
Completely lost in the plot of the heroine Elizabeth Debicki (Jordan), who so brightly entered the plot, and then too soon faded. Elizabeth is very memorable in Agents of A.N.C.L., and I think I would rather prefer the latter film if we consider only her acting skills.
If we take into account only one film, then about the plot I can say only one thing – it is incredibly easy to predict the outcome of events. Strange as it may be, I was able to determine with absolute precision what would happen next. (small remark: I haven't read the book)
I loved the costumes of the heroes: very juicy, bright and colorful. But even with all that, I couldn’t feel the spirit of the 1920s. Apparently, just not my genre, as they say, although the subject is still catchy.
It did not cause much interest and musical accompaniment. I am well aware that the film is modern, but Lana del Rey does not add atmosphere to the film, and the color is even more lost. It would be much more appropriate to create not retro remakes, but individual musical compositions that would become a great addition to the course of events.
I can say that this is probably one of the most recommended films that left such a mediocre mark on my memory, and therefore I hardly want to watch it again.

He had the gift of hope, I had never met such a person before. “I’m not going to see you again.” (c)
I don’t like the usual melodramas about love, when the plot is like — he loves her, she loves another, and he loves another who loves in turn that first ... or about not mutual love, about unattainable love, when everything, absolutely everything, according to a pattern. It's already so boring... I want this genre to be filled with an additional story. After all, it is then comes the belief that true love exists, that there are men capable of acting for the sake of a woman, so that at least for a minute to believe that this can be not only on the pages of books, or the screen of the cinema.
This is a film about a man who rises to the top for a woman, rises to love, reveals his identity as the film progresses, wears a mask for a woman. And yes, certainly, playing this man Leonardo DiCaprio, once again proves his talent, his Gatsby is attractive, magnificent, "great." The movie is already winning. There are many complementary factors, but more on that later. The cast, in general, is perfectly matched, the actors played strong roles, made their characters part of the film, so much so that the movie was really good, and not just to play their fee, which in modern cinema is found through every film, if not more. The only thing, except that, Tobey Maguire, looked in the background, a little simple, maybe even weak. Although, if you look from the other side, perhaps he should stand out, he plays a man, by and large, random at “this holiday of life”, he is also a storyteller. We learn the whole story, in particular the main character, in parallel with him. And this is another plus of the film - from the third person, which brings its positive shade.
I also want to highlight the text part of the film (here, of course, you should pay homage to the book). Listening to the text is pleasant, interesting, the phrases are built beautifully, much can really be cut into quotes.
Separately, I also want to say about the scenery, everything is very beautiful, spectacular, perfectly displays the time shown in the film. Gatsby’s parties, bright, staged, from the director’s point of view very beautiful, large-scale, here it is also worth including soundtracks that contribute to the drama, or rather hide it behind them at the beginning of the film. No wonder the film Oscar for the best costumes, for the best work of the director, these awards in this situation are really justified, and most importantly the film is worthy of them. The music is beautifully selected, there are a lot of it, it is incendiary, and it adds this interweaving of the secrecy of the drama, from the eyes of the audience, from the eyes of most heroes. The whole meaning of the film is hidden behind luxury, and in this situation, watching the trailer, a person will have an impression of him at most 10% of what the film gives.
On the storyline, there are also several characters. Basically, everything that happened to them in the aggregate of events is because of Gatsby, because of the love of one person. In fact, the ending is what is missing in many films, and brings other emotions. But this is his life, hidden behind entertainment, sincere and real love. And, this film is interesting because it’s different, it’s not another story about “Cinderella” (albeit a little vice versa, but the meaning does not change from here), this film is about excitement, about happiness, about a dream, about love, about life.

I haven't read the book. I didn’t know anything about the film, I often saw a shot with DiCaprio on the Internet, his first shot in the film, where he raises a glass against the background of fireworks, everything is so festive, chic, but in fact the film is about nothing. The actions of the heroes are stupid, meaningless. I am the viewer who watched this film from scratch in every sense, and I will not recommend it for viewing, will not think about it for a few more days, analyze the words and actions of the characters, I want to quickly forget it and stop regretting the time spent watching. The movie is a 99% failure. If you read a book, it is a disappointment, if you do not read the book, you do not understand all the subtleties that were in the original source, do not understand some of the actions of the characters, do not understand why you watched it. So many scenes and actions, and sometimes not necessary scenes, and inefficiencies above the roof.
Here I write and write, but there is little meaning, a superficial opinion, there are words, but there is no whole. So this movie is a picture, and where is the idea?
Half the movie wondered what it was about. It was about love!
Half an hour waited for the appearance of the main character, an agonizing wait, a mysterious figure, a rich man, a burner of life, and the whole film is tormented by the thought, who he really is, why such parties? Love moved him, he called his beloved from the other side of the bay, he missed his love and wants to return it, he does not want to accept that the past cannot be changed. He should have been killed in an accident with his lover, and the end wouldn't have been hardwired out of a finger, and there wouldn't have been such disappointment from the picture. But no, suffer, the audience, the director has so many beautiful and meaningless pictures, you have to shove them all in. All! And you're going to watch it, you're being bullied, you're waiting for a grand final, he's the GREAT Gatsby! What's great about him? Bandit of the middle hand, cutila, major of the 20s. And so I wanted something really great, you expect something cool, there DiCaprio starred, he does not play shit, but only an empty puff, a bad life of a guy who lies a lot. Beautiful wrapper and emptiness inside.
After watching, I found out who he is a great director, and it became clear, this is a copy of Moulin Rouge, and I kept thinking what a familiar picture, and these techniques have already seen, everything fell into place, someone has this style to shoot in one key, and someone has a limp imagination.
Evaluation only for the picture, costumes, parties and unjustified feeling “something is about to happen, and the film will be terribly interesting.”
The soundtrack is nightmarish, this rap is just off topic, modern music was repulsive. For the whole film, no beautiful actress, and the modern manicure of the 2010s just killed all the bright feelings in me, it’s like if characters in spacesuits periodically appeared.

I watched this movie a few times. Despite the presence of bright frames and dynamics, the tape is not without depth, which seems attractive to me, as a lover of realism.
In my opinion, cinema is atmospheric. That's one of the pluses. Voice-over allows you to feel this atmosphere more strongly. I liked all the actors. The hero of DiCaprio, as in some other films, appeared to be an active, emotionally rich and extraordinary person. The very story of a long-standing love affair and the desire to achieve married wives suggests the presence of drama in the plot. With interest, the viewer can observe how the events around Gatsby and Daisy develop and what decision they will eventually come to in relation to each other. Costumes, a show of nature, camera work give the film color. The finale is sentimental and memorable. Many people recommend reading the book. I will say that I could not understand the book. I read about 50 pages and quit, because I was not very interested in reading long descriptions of nature and parties, the atmosphere was not felt in the cinema.
I put a 9 instead of a 10 because I don't understand how Gatsby has been in love with such a shallow wife for so long. What was her charisma? It is also unclear why none of his friends came to the funeral. There is clearly an unnatural “twisting” of drama. Of course, this movie is worth watching. According to the number of reviews to it on this site, it is already possible to understand that this is a movie, which will remain in the history of the film industry.

Bright lights, noisy parties, a sea of champagne, dancing until you fall, expensive cars, chic outfits, shine, riot of colors and luxury in almost all its manifestations – all this you can find in ' The Great Gatsby' Australian director Baz Luhrmann. From the first minutes, the picture immerses the viewer in the unique, in its own way, beautiful world of America of the 20s. The film is literally impregnated with a particularly beautiful atmosphere, which envelopes the viewer from the very first minutes of watching the film, not allowing him even for a second to remember the real world and today.
The film ' The Great Gatsby' is an adaptation of the eponymous, which became an American classic for all time, the novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. But did Baz Luhrmann manage to adequately embody Fitzgerald’s immortal classic on the big screen? Yes, undisputed 'Yes' This film adaptation retained the special charm and charm that the author of the novel gave his brainchild back in 1925. Of course, Baz Luhrman changed a few details, added something of his own to the film adaptation, but it did not spoil the film at all, but rather graced it. Here it is worth noting simply chicly selected music, which, despite some modernity, perfectly complements the film, filling it with a sharp taste of America of the 20s. And the well-chosen cast, led by the famous Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby himself, is another reason for which this film can and should be praised. Having released this film, Baz Luhrman once again proved himself a master of creating truly fascinating, bright and very atmospheric films. One has only to remember it ' Moulin Rouge' 2001 or ' Romeo+Juliet' 1996, which, by the way, ' The Great Gatsby' does not concede, as soon as you understand that Lurman knows how to create high-quality, beautiful and colorful cinema, for which he is very grateful.
Now back to the #39;Gatsby' The narration in the film comes from the perspective of Nick Carraway, who lived a quite calm, ordinary and measured life before he met him, the mysterious and very rich Jay Gatsby, who was known almost all of New York due to the fact that he threw huge parties, to which all lovers of noisy and truly chic fun gathered. Nick and Jay quickly become good friends, but then it turns out that they are connected by something else, namely a girl. And no, no, don’t think that they are all heroes of another love triangle, everything is a little more complicated. Daisy Buchanan, who is exactly the same girl, is Nick Carraway's second cousin. And by the will of fate it turned out that it was in her that Jay Gatsby has long been madly in love with. This may all sound a little strange and confusing, but I don’t dare say more, as I don’t want to open too many nuances of this story without wanting to take away your opportunities to figure it out for yourself and experience the film to the fullest.
It has everything: fun holidays, ordinary life, charming romance, drama, desperation, beauty, burning tears, pure love, betrayal and hatred. ' The Great Gatsby' is a story about beautiful love, true friendship, how that era lived, about life and how unfair it is. But more importantly, this is a story about people, about how they feel, what they are capable of, about their experiences and about their world.
'The Great Gatsby' is an incredibly colorful, to some extent magical, fascinating, taking a beautiful film into its captivity, which will not leave indifferent neither the ordinary nor the sophisticated viewer, and even those who are a fan of the immortal novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald.
If suddenly, it turned out that you do not have money for a concert of your favorite band, and you are a fan or just a fan of a certain band, then you can replace a trip to a concert performance by watching Baz Luhrmann’s film The Great Gatsby. Only here is the minus, if you know in advance what this movie is about and remember all the compositions and singers involved by heart, and among them there were no your favorite bands-performers, then, alas. And so, yes - this is the most faithful project, combining a frequently changing mood, the emotional background of which is brightened by well-known multi-genre hits.
A wonderful dialogue canvas, considering it, you can find all the new, previously missed life words.
The main mechanism of the tape is a love line, it was created so as to please not only lovers of melodramas. The history of the relationship between a man and a woman is presented beautifully, not annoyingly, somehow real - with frames, revenge, intrigue and mistakes. The movie also shows a real friendship, which is no less interesting to follow than the melodramatic mechanism of fatal love.
The actors amazingly and lively play, the director and the operator on the same wave - miraculously and rhythmically pick up their drive tact.
Moral and instructive conclusions are present, which already erases the subconsciously pop overtones. After watching you want one thing - to throw a noisy and expensive party, arranging a costume show. Time to light up!
I really liked this movie, I didn’t go to the premiere. Then I looked. I'm so drawn to the movie. I don’t even know where to start...
The movie is about love, of course. What else? Well, about many other things, about life in New York, about infidelity, about Prohibition, about hate, etc., etc. And what are the great parties shown in the movie? Walk, walk, walk! The costumes of the characters (the rich life of that time) are very well worked out, the landscapes are simply magnificent! The film is beautiful, nothing to add. Sometimes it reminds me of the whole musical, in a way. A lot of scenery and dancing.
And my favorite DiCaprio, out of competition, master of his craft. A guy in love with Gatsby who's clearly wearing pink glasses. The scale of Jay Gatsby is impressive. You see, he wanted love, simple, true love! Being loved and loving. As it happens in love veil in front of the eyes... I wanted to scream at him through the screen! Open your eyes to what is happening.
Well, the end struck with its greed. The film gave me a storm of impressions. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.
2013 The Great Gatsby is a great movie. He is a masterpiece of our time. The best adaptation of the great novel by the brilliant American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. It was put by the wonderful director Baz Luhrmann, who put such wonderful paintings as Romeo + Juliet (1996)" and Moulin Rouge (2001)". Almost the whole novel fit into the picture, only a few moments are omitted, about which I will not spread. If you are interested, read the book. Let me tell you a little bit about the characters:
1. Nick Carraway played by Tobey Maguire. The actor gave 100%. It is interesting to watch him, as well as to empathize with him. The character was interesting and memorable. Especially tried domestic actor dubbing - Mikhail Tikhonov. He gave the voice of the actor a special charm that is perfect for him.
2. Jay Getsby performed by Leonardo Dicaprio. The best, just the best on-screen Gatsby, the rest of the actors fall short of his level. Leo has managed to completely betray the character of this character, who is different from everyone else. Each of his lines is at least included in the gold fund of quotes. His story seems simple, but gradually everything turns around and... better see how it ends.
The picture is so “delicious” that I can’t compare it to any film. I want to talk about 3D separately. Before watching it, I doubted the melodrama would look good in 3D, but fortunately I was wrong. 3D is awesome, and you’ll see. I want to say a special thank you to the domestic actors of dubbing.
A few days ago, I discovered F.S. Fitzgerald by reading his most famous and, according to many, most significant work, The Great Gatsby. The deceptive flicker of the life of the American beau monde of the 20s fascinated me, as did the narrator, Nick Carraway. The colorful, noisy and carefree jazz era was marked by unprecedented economic growth and a rapid decline in morals. We are witnessing the tragedy of Mr. Gatsby, taking place against the backdrop of an endless "holiday of life."
Jay Gatsby himself points to the comet and compares his life to its flight: he lived an intense 32 years - he was poor, and became obscenely rich; he went on a yacht on the sea, returned from the war a hero, fell in love and put his life to achieve the woman he loved. By any means necessary. I must say that Daisy is not just a magical girl from a fairy tale, it is primarily the personification of luxury, well-being, carelessness - everything that any person subconsciously strives for. Getting Daisy for the main character meant not only to reunite with your beloved, but also to arrange life, beautiful and comfortable. Daisy is a concentrate of the elegant “American Dream” (which, by the way, is not only American). But Gatsby is made of a different dough, too strong and dreamy nature for a idle and decaying upper society in which prejudice is still strong. There are two people in him: an idealist with a “rare gift of hope” and a cynical pragmatist capable of even murder. And the first one is stronger.
The film copies the events of the book in detail, with the only difference that the feeling after watching the film is more unequivocal: we feel sorry for Gatsby, sorry for his beautiful dream, the last shots are sad and beautiful, and Nick with a firm hand signs over his surname “The great”. Is Gatsby that big? Looking at what he has accomplished, of course. If you look at it, hardly. The question is, was Daisy a great target? It turns out that a man with extraordinary abilities, a noble man wasted all his talents.
There is a lot to be said about the picture. The film is shot in an amazing way, with the use of special effects so that America of the 20s resembles a Disney fairy tale and Gatsby’s house – the prince’s palace. It was very interesting to see it, besides, this technique is not without meaning: the main character built his air castle and lived in it for five years. There are also stunning contrasts of shiny villas and muddy under construction areas. In addition, the magnificent dresses of the jazz era, in my opinion, can not leave anyone indifferent.
Separately, I want to talk about the game of actors. I don’t belong to the crowd of Leonardo DiCaprio fans, but he played great. It is hard to imagine that it would be possible to convey more reliably all the contradictions of Mr. Gatsby’s nature: he is gentle with Daisy and cruel when doing business; he is intemperate and the next second impeccably polite, he is confident and timid. Truly sweet and charming Daisy turned out to be Cary Milligan. Good is Isla Fisher as Tom Buchanan's mistress, Myrtle, and the best and more convincing looked her poor husband, played by Jason Clark: he is both pathetic and mad - unmatched!
The only thing I didn’t like was the music. Modern tracks in the era of jazz were out of place, moreover, in my opinion, it was tasteless and destroyed the atmosphere.
But overall, it's a very beautiful film about a time when people were still remembering God but were already pointing at a billboard.
Probably, everyone in life had such moments when he was inspired, he was seized by some idea, felt in love or tender feelings for someone. I also had people who inspired me. When I look back, sometimes I think of them. Always. It's usually people, no matter how much you socialized, who were like a sip of refreshing lemonade. Couple who was able to build a relationship in the walls of the university (and you are not), a successful girl (and you are not), an interesting friend who communicated with you when nothing interesting happened in your life. These people and their lives meet our aspirations. Of course, we tend to idealize everything.
The main idea of the film was revealed to me recently. Let’s scroll through the highlights in his head, a young man in military uniform meets a beautiful girl who rushes past him in a car. In those years, this transport (like any other) was a luxury. And for this guy, that moment opened the door to an unknown world where rich people live, and they live there with completely different concerns. The girl seemed like an angel to him. Having gone to war and coming back, he wanted to get back in that moment, to plunge into that acquaintance. However, he mistook the short time that inspired him, in which he was in love, with reality. And showed wonders of stubbornness - he began to seek a married friend, without thinking about how they will live together further and whether they will be able to build a relationship.
Let's not judge the hero. He didn’t want everything, he just followed his heart. After all, we also buy iPhones, overpaying for the brand, buy coffee in Starbucks, not “3 in 1” bags, and instead of chocolates and individual toys, we buy Kinders for children. After all, we do all this in order to feel close to the great genius Jobs, we want to feel ourselves in New York, holding a cardboard cup in our hand, and the Kinders conceal some magic in themselves. We are happy to deceive, happy to believe in something, happy to entertain some thoughts and dreams.
Gatsby, of course, wouldn’t buy an android phone, drink cheap coffee and gnaw at “Russia is a generous soul” tiles. And he wouldn't have fallen in love with a McDonald's saleswoman or a Euronet salesman. He fell in love with something unattainable, like that green light, something that gave him a lot of imagination, encouraged him to work on himself and grow up, a girl from a different social class, more educated, more well-groomed.
However, the moral of the film is that sometimes things should just inspire us. If something inspires you, that’s good, it’s a great gift. If you are inspired by a person, it is already a great gift to you from him or from fate. Think whatever you want. And you need to be content with this, and not make a person an unconditional idol and impose friendship on him. Sometimes, getting what you want, you can get tired, or, worse, be disappointed.
I've seen this movie twice. The first time I saw it was when I had no idea what true love for a woman was or what family was. Then the film The Great Gatsby did not touch me and even seemed boring.
The second time I saw it was when I lost my beloved woman and my family. And that's when I got to the heart of the Great Gatsby, and I got close to him and realized his mistake.
The thing is, Gatsby gave a huge sense of eternal love to one man named Daisy! He created an idol for himself and suffered from the impossibility of being with her. His love closed and did not develop. He’s like an egotist who demands things that don’t belong to him for a long time (Daisy), his desire is so strong that he’s willing to sacrifice himself to achieve that goal. But is it worth killing the divine principle and love for the sake of a sinful person who also does not know how to live in this life and sins without knowing?
In my opinion, the film shows us a big drama of a man named Gatsby. He planted Daisy’s ideal in his head and never realized that Daisy didn’t love him so much, dreamed of him and waited for him faithfully all these years. She was just in love with Gatsby, but it's a feeling that goes away. Love is strong and true can be born only between two partners who have gone through the trials of life and proved that they are worthy to be with each other.
Gatsby is a very sensitive and vulnerable person, Daisy on the contrary is frivolous and more susceptible to emotions that do not come to a common denominator. She didn't create an idol out of Gatsby or put it in her head. Instead, she cried and got married. Yes, it was difficult for her, but still the depth of love and dog loyalty was not born in her. It's not her fault Gatsby loved her so much all these years. It was his choice and his desire to love no matter what.
Sometimes we love someone much more than he loves us and the movie The Great Gatsby proves that. Love is beautiful but love should be mutual otherwise it is so easy to get confused and create an idol and in the end break your life.
Ps: When I divorced my wife, I continued to love her and try to do it again. She was already in a new relationship, and I kept believing that she would come back and tell her she loved her and do everything I could for her. It was hard for me that man could no longer answer me in kind and I came to God. I knew that true love could only be for him. And love for a person is just a beautiful feeling that you need to be able to enjoy together, but not alone. Gatsby created an idol from Daisy and gave his life for her, but he made a mistake, and this road led him to perdition. It is so important to let people go both physically and out of your heart.
"You coming, old man? We need you and we need you.
Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby is one of the most famous books in the world. And here is the famous Australian director - Baz Luhrman presented us his new film adaptation with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.
The name of Baz Luhrmann, who once received an Oscar nomination for Moulin Rouge, already suggests that the film should be atmospheric, beautiful and stylish, with beautifully selected music. That's what happened. What he's doing with the picture and the sound, it's just not in words. This is truly admirable.
Spring 1922. Nick Carroway, a young man with a classic dream of becoming rich, comes to New York. He gets a job in one of the corporations on Wall Street and rents a house on the outskirts of the city near the mansions and palaces of the newly-minted rich, including the huge castle of the mysterious Mr. Jay Gatsby - a man known to everyone not only in New York, but also beyond. Every weekend, without exception, he throws the most lush and luxurious parties in the city, to which many people and all kinds of celebrities come: from actors and politicians to scammers and mafiosi. Despite its popularity, almost nothing is known about it. Gatsby makes friends with Nick and involves him in his world. A world of immaculate dreams, unrestrained love and destructive illusions.
He smiled at me affectionately, no, much more than affectionately. Such a smile, full of inexhaustible encouraging power, you can meet four, well - five times in your life. For a moment, it seems to absorb the fullness of the external world, then, as if obeying an inevitable choice, concentrates on you. And you feel that you are understood as much as you want to be understood, believe in you as much as you believe in yourself, and certainly see you as you most want to appear.
Everything is beautiful in this film: acting, directing, music, camera work, the work of the artist - everything. Luhrman created a great film and hardly anyone will surpass his adaptation of Fitzgerald’s novel.
Leonardo DiCaprio For many people who really deserve their fame. If his name is in the credits, then the film is worthy of attention. He played so deeply and believably that after watching it is almost impossible to imagine Gatsby performed by another actor.
Toby Maguire... The wonderful play of this actor, as well as DiCaprio, cannot but cause delight. From a secondary hero, he managed to create a memorable character.
Cary Mulligan did a great job with her image, despite the fact that it was quite complex. Probably, at first I had to doubt her, but after watching there were not the slightest claims to her game.
As for other actors, it is just as difficult to find fault with them - they all played their roles as befits professionals - skillfully and beautifully.
He looked at her with a special look - every girl dreams that one day they will look at her like this.
The soundtrack, conveying the atmosphere of the film in a relevant key for the viewer, as best as possible, deserves a separate word. The society, intoxicated with the gold rush, is now igniting not under the usual jazz, but under modern hip-hop. In an interview, Luhrman explained this decision – the book mentions jazz and street African-American music, but he did not want the film to remind of the past (was nostalgic), so the choice of music in the film is not accidental, because now hip-hop occupies the same niche that then occupied jazz. This may seem absurd, but believe me, it works perfectly. Moreover, it gives the film a special attraction to the viewer and makes it more memorable.
Many songs were written specifically for this film. They merge with it into a single whole, perfectly complementing, and fully corresponding to its semantic content,
Help the viewer to reveal its subtext.
Lana Del Rey – Young and Beautiful
Will you still love me?
When I'm no longer young and beautiful?
I know you will...
From a technical point of view, the film was very surprising. Artist-director Katrina Martin, who has already worked with Luhrmann on the film "Moulin Rouge" and received two "Oscars" for him for the best scenery and costumes, again became the owner of two gold statuettes for the best work of the director and costumes, which is deservedly - the film is full of bright colors and just amazes the imagination. Thanks to excellent camera work, the camera immerses us in the world of Fitzgerald, choosing extremely successful plans. The whole movie is glued together by an elegant montage that shows all emotions, does not allow the picture to stand still and does not twist the scene. There is no extra or missing staff - everything looks soft and pleasant.
In terms of rhythm, the film is also very good. Luhrman focuses on Nick in the hospital, tells the main story of Gatsby, then shows us excerpts from his past. And he does it all in a very harmonious way.
But despite all this, this film does not reach the depth of philosophical thoughts of Fitzgerald. The director's style is too melodramatic. The characters have lost their complex world order and not all of them can fully reveal themselves in 140 minutes. “Gatsby” can even be reproached as a superficial and incorrect film adaptation, but there is some inexplicable harmony in this film and notes of true drama of the book under the rubble of riotous colors are still heard. It even has its own metaphor... You can compare a book and a movie for a very long time, but still the director and his team were able to transfer the whole essence of the novel and this is the most important thing. The main thing "Gatsby" does - causes emotions and makes you empathize, but it is important for the viewer to fully understand it.
In conclusion,
"The Great Gatsby" - cinema "handmade". This is a stunning drama that exposes the vices of society and reflects the mores of people who are drunk with money. It evokes a strong emotional response and this is its main strength and all the incredible charm.
The themes that Fitzgerald touches in the novel The Great Gatsby will always be relevant. It is a simple but profound story.
Comparison with the book suggests itself. It’s hard to believe that it’s impossible to compare film and book. And yet it's a great adaptation of Fitzgerald's classic novel.
The term casting is cynically used in the case of DiCaprio. Perhaps our generation is much closer and more understandable is his Mr. Gatsby, and not Robert Radford and his character in the film adaptation of 1974.
After all, each generation has its own heroes. And the acting talent of Leonardo, despite numerous jokes about the Oscar, is undoubted.
I think in general, the version shot by Baz Luhrmann fits our era exactly as it is - noisy, bright, dynamic, with a bit of hysterical energy.
Yes, morality, real deep feelings remained on the side, and in the foreground there was a dramatic love line, noisy entertainment, a taste of carnival and hedonism - and no sad endings have a place on this holiday of life.
Visual series, music, riot of colors and styles almost stone on stone does not leave from the original source and a worthy cinematic predecessor, but isn’t it a great idea to make an old character, entourage and plot something of your own?
Especially when it comes to how bright and talented it is.
Of course, you can perceive this film as a desecration of the classics and the source, as a curtsey towards modern love of retro, at the level of kitsch.
But everyone draws conclusions from this story on their own. I like freedom and interpretation.
It is amazing when a director manages to convey the full picture of the book, the whole atmosphere of the 20s. This is a time of culture called the Jazz Time, which is not familiar to me personally, but it seems as if it was all recently.
The life of Gatsby can be divided into 3 stages.
First, Becoming an image of a person as he saw himself in his dreams.
When Gatsby meets Daisy, Gatsby realizes that he needs to go through the next step. 5 years of loneliness and excruciating expectations.
The third is answers to questions after meeting Daisy.
Gatsby is a multifaceted personality who can be admired infinitely. His words make you feel the experience of his soul and give you hope, and a smile imprints on your mind. On the other hand, blind naivety, left out of time, raises a bunch of unanswered questions.
The film is simply beautiful for the soul, the author’s thoughts and even the script of many books are perfectly conveyed.

"The incarnation is done." Each of the heroes, each of us.
So what? Much has been said and written about this film, but I will add a little more.
Nick Carraway is in deep depression, shocked and lost, with a heavy, almost unbearable burden in the soul from his loss. He cannot clearly tell the doctor what happened, but he can write about what happened on a paper that, as you know, tolerates everything. Nick is not an ordinary person. Carraway describes the events with the feeling of loss, the bitter sediment that remains from the shock experienced in a short time, gradually understanding and describing what happened to him that summer. Aware of the phenomenon that he unwittingly witnessed, a phenomenon named Gatsby.
Jay Gatsby is a party king, a rich boy whose untold fortune is gained by God knows how. His name is covered with fog, an impenetrable cloud of rumors and incredible speculation, among which there is hardly a drop of truth. Gradually, layer by layer, Gatsby reveals himself, fascinating with his smile, wonderful upbringing and manners. We already unwittingly, from the first shots, fall under his charm, under the charms emanating from him, involuntarily thinking - is he real, is he a real person in front of us or a mirage, a non-existent ghost of a monumentally beautiful castle? But soon the viewer realizes, yes, he really is a man.
But throwing away the fleur of the lyrical hero, you can see another Gatsby. This is a man with a “God complex” who rose from the very bottom of his life to the elite, during the time of Prohibition, contacting local business leaders. He quickly became rich, engaged in the illegal sale of alcohol in pharmacies, banned at that time. It does not seem to be a romantic image. But Gatsby, confident in his infallibility, had a motive - the desire at all costs to see next to him the one for which Jay was ready to move mountains, for his Daisy.
Striking is the piercing emotion that tears to pieces throughout the viewing. Jay Gatsby is a great man, but he is great not by the wealth he gained from taking advantage of the situation in the country, not by the influence he had, he is great by the great sense of hope, hope for love, in which he so strongly believed even after hearing from Daisy - but I love you too.
Unfortunately, people like Gatsby are an endangered species. Few people are able to put all their strength and life to achieve the favor of a loved one, to do such things, just to catch the eye dear to the heart. They are men of honor, nobility, the best representatives of their time, often subjected to attacks, undeserved humiliation, slander and undisguised malice, and all because they are different, not such as the shameless, mercantile, unscrupulous and gray majority. People like Gatsby can bring hope, love and enlightenment to those who share their society. Nick understood his friend - the only one of all those who partyed at Gatsby's.
But it might seem odd that I didn't say anything about Daisy, that beautiful lady that Gatsby loved so much. Some of this woman's actions, I can understand without judging. But not the last.
A little back in the story, I remember the ending. He was waiting for her to call. So much hope, love, a whole gamut of feelings were reflected on Gatsby’s face when he heard the phone call, thinking, ‘Here it is, everything will work out!’
As for the soundtracks for the film, despite the fact that the music was used modern, it is no worse conveys the spirit of the Jazz generation, thus proving the connection of times and the possibility of transferring the story of Gatsby to the present.
Throughout the film, the destinies of the three main characters are traced, conclusions are drawn, their fates are tried on themselves. We condemn and sympathize to the pain in the heart and tears that turn over our eyes. It remains to say the last, after viewing.
Baz Luhrman is a pretty interesting director. He is a stylist in the world of cinema. Focusing on the visual component of the film, on costumes and colors, Baz has never hit his face in the dirt, at the same time promising viewers an authentic and mesmerizing only one trailer “Annealing”. Therefore, it is not surprising that “The Great Gatsby”, as a film, turned out to be colorful, loud and memorable. But should this be the adaptation of one of the greatest American novels of the last century?
Here it should be said that “The Great Gatsby” by Francis Scott Fitzgerald is a small book, but filled with both in terms of elaboration of the world, and in terms of meaning. In telling an interesting story, the novel focuses on human relationships and the value of human courage. The tragic ending is not an event, which does not correlate with the other specifics of the whole book - no, because Fitzgerald wrote the whole novel in such motifs, without getting too much into humor. It is a drama that makes you think about yourself and the society around you.
“The Great Gatsby” Baz Luhrmann is a great, diverse carnival, in whose outfits the meaning of the original creation is dressed. The director significantly increased the humorous component, which is not to say that it is bad, because, indeed, such a lively narrative is similar only, so to speak, to the face. And the dynamics of what is happening, as you can already understand from my former words, is great here. This is as such a colorful kaleidoscope, whose atmosphere you penetrate, whose setting you admire because of the elaboration of costumes and, in fact, the world itself.
However, almost verbatim quoting the novel, the creators still miscalculated something: the musical component. The book is the purest reflection of the “jazz time”. It is imbued with long, sad blues motifs. Whereas here everything is modernized. As if trying to please a young viewer, the creators went to such a step, even an ordinary wind solo of saxophones passing through the synthesizer. What for our viewer and not quite noticeable and tangible. However, for the Western connoisseur, where the book progenitor is akin to our “Hero of our time” – this is an extremely noticeable detail that can be perceived both good-natured and malignant, but not accepted as something ordinary.
However, what the creators cannot be blamed for is the selection of actors: such a brilliant cast is not just names. In this film, each hero addresses the viewer to the judgment of exactly such a character, which he boasted of the handwritten progenitor. In short, I can’t imagine a better Jay Gatsby than Leonardo DiCaprio. The same can be said unequivocally about Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire), and Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton), and about the female characters performed by Carey Mulligan (Daisy) and Elizabeth Debicki (Jordan), who with their non-standard appearance perfectly fit into the entourage of the era, only adding to his fullness.
In general, keeping the main idea of the book, Baz Luhrman still created a very good movie. Yes, with some stylistic features that were aimed at the modern viewer, but at the same time with sustained characters, morality and purpose: to convey to the viewer the uselessness of huge money. Friendship is not a material thing, nor is love. The past slips into the distance and is elusive to human hands, no matter how expensive the rings are clothed with their fingers. Everything that is dear to man has no price. Like and truly human gut: courage, fearlessness, the ability to take responsibility for one’s own and others’ actions are the qualities that make the ordinary representative of society a Personality. And these qualities, again, cannot be bought. This is ours. It's a learning experience. It's vital. In a similar way, like this story of the American dream, which only in the realities there displays the scriptures familiar to hundreds of peoples, which were reproduced on our lands by the hand of Mikhail Lermantov in The Hero of Our Time.
P.S. Thank you very much.
As someone who has read F.S. Fitzgerald’s book can argue, the film was not as strong as the adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, War and Peace by Bondarchuk.
Nick Carraway is being treated for alcoholism and in the boarding house mentions a man named Gatsby, speaking of him fascinated, and every memory lighted up in him. Gatsby arranged every weekend parties, whose music spread as far as the other side of the sea, and came there thousands of young people who only wanted to live luxuriously and idle.
It’s an incredible, romantic, tragic love story, but the book wasn’t just about love, it was about the twisted younger generation of the twenties. They were so addicted to the gold rush, forgetting all morality, did not show up for the funeral of Gatsby, from which they wanted only fun. But all this is not in the film, it was only talked about for a couple of seconds, and to inattentive viewers it seemed an ordinary appendix. Everyone was worried about only the love story of Gatsby and Daisy, and nothing else.
I am incredible selection of actors that fit exactly the description in the book, and amazing their acting, except for the game of Tobey Maguire, who momentarily overplayed, then gave out the emotions that should be suitable for a certain episode.
Also very colorful were costumes of different colors, hung with different trinkets. All this was so striking that it seemed that the whole atmosphere was created only by them.
Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby is neither a good adaptation nor a good movie. It can be noted only the work of actors who performed their work completely independently.
A great work of Fitzgerald and no less great dramatic film. Writers have such a technique by which the reader can visually look, compare, draw a conclusion about the situation. A metaphor in this case is a poster that depicts the face of a person looking directly at you through glasses. The face is high and unflappable looking at you, fussing and rattling in your world, in your life, in your past.
Everyone will find something close to themselves in this film. For in the lives of many there was unshared love, loss, nights of suffering with tears and without tears about what would have happened if she had loved. no! if she had given only one look, for which knights plunge a spear into their brother's heart, or kings destroy and conquer cities. He was waiting for that look. But she turned out to be too small, stupid, beautiful doll... unworthy. did not appreciate! No one knows the value of happiness. And she didn't know.
I really liked the music of The XX "Together", which fills the heart with sadness. as if you are sailing in a boat called life alone and no one is there to warm your soul.
DiCaprio handled the role. There is in him, in his eyes, some kind of devilishness, willpower, which in combination with the angelic appearance gives the effect of Gatsby, a lot of survivors, a lot of waiting, a lot of suffering, but...
“Love those who deceive you, love those who despise you, love those who forget you – great hearts tend to be deceived in their best feelings and affections.”

Ambiguously in 2013, the audience met the premiere of the film "The Great Gatsby" Baz Luhrmann. One half of the world was fascinated by the gentle love story of a young rich man in the conditions of the 1920s - an era of decaying morality, deafening jazz and revealing outfits. Another accused the director of a clear adherence to the source, and in the selection of actors and in the very idea to film the novel of the same name by American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald.
According to a single plot of the book and film, Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire) settles next door with millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), known by all his name and generous parties for luxury, but not a real person. Subsequently, Nick meets a mysterious neighbor and witnesses his love drama with Daisy Buchanan. The first love of Gatsby in the distant past and the current wife of a rich aristocrat and hoodlum Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).
After the film Romeo + Juliet (1996), where Luhrman presented Shakespeare’s tragedy in modern realities, his obedient alignment with the printed original in Gatsby seems really manic and pedantic. With the filigree of the jeweler, the director reproduces The Great Gatsby from book binding, as if writing a coursework with a single source of information.
Like the book, the entire tape is accompanied by the words of the narrator Nick Carraway, a direct observer and participant in the events displayed. With the only difference in time - if in the book the narrator observes the luxury of nature, the cold of the city, the noise of parties, then in the film he remembers them - his voiceover comments and analyzes everything that is already happening with words and sentences familiar from the book.
Symbols of deceptive hopes and substitution of values on the screen are also opaquely the same thick and poisonous-red thread. The green light on the opposite bank and the blue eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleberg on the huge billboard now appear in the frame, then disappear again, leaving a sense of their understatement, but excessive importance.
Even actors are selected as if the book characters have found flesh and moved from pages to screen. In Cary Mulligan it is easy to recognize Daisy Buchanan - a woman with a "cute" and "sad" face, who "revived only bright eyes and a bright sensual mouth, but in the voice there was a lot that could not later forget the men who loved her." In Joel Edgerton, Tom Buchanan, “shouldered, thirty-year-old,” is a brunette, not a blonde, “with a firm mouth and rather arrogant manners.” And in the Leonardo DiCaprio Jay Gatsby himself, "just a franked whip, about thirty years old, distinguished by an almost ridiculous predilection for exquisite turns of speech."
In the latter case, the director’s hit in the actor, and that in the hero is so true that when watching the picture, you involuntarily begin to think about the paranormal. To DiCaprio was so successfully born and chose the profession of an actor in the heyday of cinema to play the Great Gatsby in X-hour. Whether Fitzgerald in the distant 1925 foresaw that his hero in almost a century will find a real face. A person who recreates on the screen those emotions that were not properly defined in the book. “A smile full of inexhaustible encouraging power” or the appearance that “you could think that he (Gatsby) “killed a man”, when reading without causing any associations, when watching “The Great Gatsby” find their finality in the performance of Leonardo DiCaprio.
Also skillfully and unobtrusively, hardly noticeable for the discerning reader or simply discerning viewer Baz Luhrman visual series fills and other gaps in low-emotional, as if written hastily novel Fitzgerald. Bright and dazzling costumes, rich decoration of estates, luxury and breadth of festivities in the frame unequivocally emphasize two bold lines carelessness and meaninglessness of life of people of that era, against which the dreamy essence of Gatsby seems even more paradoxical. Paradoxical for its purity, hope for mutual love and faith in its accomplishment. He is the one who rises above others and, in the end, the great.
The rapid change of general and close-up plans, in turn, creates the impression that you are watching all the events from the sidelines, but at the same time you are constantly in a close circle of the main characters. And in combination with the other smallest details of Luhrmann’s innovation, all this turns an ordinary love story, worn to holes by soap operas, from the stingy black words on white pages into the bright glare of an entire era.
Bewilderment in this harmony of the shell and content is caused only by a musical selection. Instead of the expected sounds of saxophone and piano, more logical for displaying the pores of jazz, sound “Love Is Blindness” by Jack White, “Happy Togethe” performed by the group “Filter” and other modern compositions. This discrepancy between the music and the events depicted is constantly ripping out another, unreal, screen-created world. And every time the first notes in my head, the question arises: “Why?”
Baz Luhrman once said, “If you put people in front of a mirror that tells them you were drunk with money, they won’t want to look at it.” But if you project the reflection into another era, such a story will be in demand.” Isn't Luhrmann the Great after that?

I watched this movie almost three years ago, in 2013, almost immediately after its release. Then the film made a strong impression on me, and I thought that I did not have enough words to express my admiration for this film masterpiece. But quite accidentally, without planning it, recently reviewed this film and could not leave his review. Especially after seeing a lot of negative reviews. It is worth admitting that human nature is generally arranged in such a way that it is easier to write a negative review than a positive or even laudatory one. It is easier to shout, to find some sparrows and minor shortcomings, but in no case to recognize the brilliant embodiment of a brilliant book. Most of all, in this situation, I am struck by the wording from the category: "I, of course, did not read this book, but ..." or "I watched the film and consider it enough ...". Indeed, why bother to get acquainted with one of the best examples of American literary classics?
Personally, I love this book. I have read it three times (in different periods of life) and, I think, the fourth time is not far off, because in it the author reflects on behalf of his heroes on the eternal themes of love, honor, dignity, betrayal, human weaknesses and vices. So, regardless of whether you saw this movie or not, be sure to get acquainted with the original!
Now a few words about this film. As far as I know, this is the fourth attempt to film a great novel by F. S. Fitzgerald, and for me it is the best. Of course, the film is no better than the original (that is, the book), and at the same time it accurately conveys the whole range of emotions that arise from reading the novel.
The correspondence of the cast to the images of the heroes is not one hundred percent, but very, very close! Of course, it is impossible not to express endless gratitude to the director and producers for choosing Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of J.P. Gatsby (I can’t imagine any living actor who would be so perfect for the character). Everything in him lived at the pace of that time: his manners, gait, become, a careless grin. Once again I am convinced of the incredible genius of DiCaprio, which seems to be subject to absolutely any image, whether it is Ernie in What's eating Gilbert Grape?, or Cobb from The Beginnings, or Frank Abiganale from Catch Me If You Can", or Teddy Daniels from Island of the Damned. I am not talking about the role of Hugh Glass, for which he received the long-awaited Oscar statuette.
In fact, the romantic idealist with a delicate and vulnerable soul cannot help but fall in love with generations of women, and in the performance of DiCaprio becomes a weapon of mass destruction of women's hearts.
I must say that the entire cast was selected very successfully. In the film fit even Toby Maguire (in the image of Nick Carraway), which, in my opinion, is very difficult to fit anywhere, except for Spider-Man. Cary Mulligan initially seemed to me not the same Daisy Buchanan (love of all life Gatsby), but only at the beginning, because she was perfect in the role of a gentle, frivolous lady.
From the beginning of the film, we are immersed in the atmosphere of America of the 20s: the era of jazz, bootleggers, Wall Street. At the center of all the viciousness, venality and is Jay Gatsby, whose incredible wealth generates a lot of rumors about his personality and activities, while not a drop does not correspond to reality. Jay Gatsby is the son of simple farmers who considered himself the son of God. Perhaps such conceit may seem pretentious, but Gatsby was worthy of such a definition. He was pure and honest, following his guiding star, the green light of hope. And while that light was unattainable to him, old Gatsby was absolutely invincible. But as soon as he found the outlines of the love of his life, all the splendor collapsed in an instant, like a house of cards.
In fact, this is a story about human weakness, frivolity and betrayal that led to death.
What’s really important is that there was a very important moment in this film adaptation for the drama, which is catharsis. The pool scene allowed the viewer to free himself from the emotional tension that formed throughout the film, thus extolling the film “The Great Gatsby” in the ranks of works of art.

Hey, everybody. Today I want to tell you about the film 'The Great Gatsby'. A screen adaptation of the novel of the same name by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Fighting for love, good actors and more. Read more about it.
Plot:
The story is written on behalf of Nick Carraway. He's coming from the Midwest to New York. In pursuit of his own American dream, he settles next door to the mysterious, famous for his party millionaire Jay Gatsby, and on the opposite bank of the bay live his cousin Daisy and her husband, a hangman and aristocrat, Tom Buchanan. Nick is drawn into the fascinating world of the rich – their illusions, love and deception. He becomes a witness to what is happening in this world and writes a story of impossible love, eternal dreams and human tragedy, which are a reflection of modern times and mores. Few people know this man, but he trusted the writer. The author shows Gatsby's life through his neighbor, so 2 different stories are intertwined here: The Life and Thoughts of Nick and The Story and Actions of Gatsby
Actors:
I can only say that the cast is great. Both main roles and secondary ones. Everyone's favorite DiCaprio, Cary Mulligan, and especially I was impressed by Tobey Maguire. I really liked his game. They all played their roles well.
The overall picture:
This picture is amazing. Excellent shot, good soundtracks, a great cast, and most importantly an interesting story.
Thank you all for reviewing this opinion.
To begin with, seeing the film for the first time I honestly did not like the film, but still decided to read the books I opened the whole deep meaning of this picture and I revised it.
I don’t think there’s much to say and everyone who watches the film will understand. The plot would seem simple, but everything is not as simple as it seems. Someone named Gatby throws parties for God knows why, collecting all the best, while remaining incognito, listening to all sorts of fables about himself. It would seem to be an empty person, a typical pretentious rich man, but by the end of the film we discover a genius, a person following a dream, literally reaching for it, no matter what.
The scenery, costumes, and most importantly the musical accompaniment was simply on a brilliant level. Everything, literally everything helps us to plunge into this era, the era of lust and debauchery, but all this does not eclipse the tragedy of a person who is going to the cherished goal of his entire conscious life, but passed by. Clinging to the past and could not understand that the past can not return. His life was exactly what he wanted. All this was highlighted by Leo’s brilliant play. There aren’t enough words to describe how this movie felt. It's brilliant.
It is not entirely clear why this film received so few Oscars, because there were many nominations that really deserved.
P.S. Gatsby believed in a green light, a happy future that gets dimmer every year. It eludes us, but it doesn’t matter. Tomorrow we will run even faster, stretch our hands even further. And one beautiful morning, we're like boats, we're all trying to make our way through the present, but we're mercilessly relegated to the past. . .
I highly recommend watching the film. The magnificent scenery, magnificent actors and magnificent little details that fill the film reveal the serious drama of an unusual man. I'll start in order.
Decoration and costumes. The picture is surprisingly pleasant to watch. There is nothing to complain about, even the soundtrack is perfect. What does it say about the costumes and scenery, which correspond to the spirit of fun of those years, and for which this film received an Oscar. They are beautiful, and also convey the inner states of the characters.
The actors are really good. In particular, Leonardo DiCaprio. It accurately conveys the emotions and feelings of a person who believes that it is possible to return the past, a person whose heart lives one girl and for whom he is ready to do anything. He's willing to spend a lot of money, he's willing to throw parties, he's willing to deceive himself and he's willing to live with hope.
Details. Very pleased with the presence in the film of small at first glance details and having important meaning. For example, a green light on the opposite side of the bay, where the love of the protagonist lives, and there is hope for their early meeting, and when hope subsides, fog appears on the water and the light disappears. Indeed, in the film, the landscape is very well in harmony with the events taking place in the film. Or, for example, a big blue billboard with big eyes on it, which essentially see all the messy events that happen next to them. These eyes represent justice, but there is no justice in this world.

A film about hope, faith and great love, which are confronted by betrayal, depravity and insignificance. The film is about a man who has carried love for one woman through his whole life, and how this is not appreciated in our world. It's about disappointment in the world and people, it's about patience that ends.
Leonardo DiCaprio is probably my favorite actor because he often plays deep characters who are alone in their understanding of life. Here he appears to us almost the perfect person. He has one dream, one goal and one woman he never changes. To some, Gatsby may seem too demanding of others, and I say that he has the right to demand special treatment, for it is the least that can be given to him in return for all his benefits. Looking at Leo in this picture, you can admire his appearance, as he is very beautiful here, and enjoy his play, as he plays every muscle of his face. I also like the beginning of the tape with the intrigue of the appearance of Gatsby. A flashing hand with a ring and a silhouette in the light of a green light is very beautiful and touching.
Other actors also looked very organic. Evil, selfish and unfaithful people they played well. Especially Cary Mulligan. Her character can not be called completely "radicheska" (see "Gentlemen of luck"), but, nevertheless, I still have antipathy even to the actress. Tobey Maguire perfectly shows his hesitation between his desire to see only the good in people and the consciousness that there is only dirt around. It was nice to see Leo and Toby on screen, knowing they were actually friends.
I read Fitzgerald’s novel, I liked it, but there was no admiration. It seems to me that he has absorbed many stories of the author, where the main character (often very poor) goes to great feats for the sake of love. I think Baz Luhrman graced this story and managed to make it more moving. He made a bright and beautiful movie with an amazing musical solution. I, of course, do not detract from the merits of the author, without whom this beautiful character simply would not have appeared.
And I am very sorry that many viewers simply did not understand the soul of Gatsby, considering his actions illogical and stupid, and Jay himself a fabulous character. There are people like that, I know. Only they are almost always broken, either by this world or by the unworthy they have trusted.
Jay, they're nothing! You alone are worth all of them together!
Screening the classics of literature is always difficult. Taking the script as a basis for a literary work, the directors always take risks: literature and cinema have too many differences. Stanley Kubrick also said that it is better to choose either a small story or not the most outstanding novel for the film adaptation - because it is impossible to transfer to the screen what is described in great literary works. After all, to do this properly, you need at least a lot of screen time (not 2 or 3 hours), and that’s not all the difficulties.
Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is a really remarkable work, very subtle, very deep. If it is to film it, then approach it with great caution and most importantly - with love for the novel. But Baz Luhrman clearly did not like the novel - otherwise how can you explain that he so abused him? A more vulgar, more incompetent film adaptation is simply impossible to imagine! From the work of Fitzgerald remained only the names of the characters and a little plot. But that’s not all – the director (and he’s a screenwriter) decided to trample “Gatsby” into the dirt.
Expecting the release of this film, I hoped to see in it the life of the times in which the novel took place. I was always fascinated by the American fashion of the 20s, I loved the music that was popular in those years - and I was sure that the film would convey the atmosphere that prevailed in the United States in the 20s of the last century. But the film instead sounds pop soundtrack, not suitable for the adaptation of such a novel, flashes incomprehensible tinsel (apparently, props from Moulin Rouge). Many scenes (actually all) look vulgar, some terribly vulgar. Gatsby's appearance was too pompous. The only plus - in the film were good costumes (but not all): dresses with mind-blowing lace at least somehow pleased the eye.
For some reason, the heroes of the film are very different from the heroes of the novel, and for the worse. I was wondering how Toby McGuire would play a character as complex as Nick Carraway, which he didn’t seem to play. The character has changed so much that it would be more honest to come up with a new name for it.
As a result, the novel, which is recognized throughout the world as an outstanding work of art, turned out to be a flat, vulgar, mediocre melodrama. Only by abandoning the novel and looking at it as a separate work, I was able to put it.
