“Nothing on nothingness, that is who they are. You alone are worth all of them put together. ?
The film was incredibly beautiful, with a mesmerizing production and editing, and despite that, I even say that the director managed to convey the essence, the idea of this immortal book. Yes, the scenes got shorter, the parties got lush, and a third of the book was somehow rewritten. But all this is done for the sake of beauty, grace, interest in viewing, and it is stupid to blame the director for this.
What really stands for is the role of Daisy, one of my favorite actresses, Cary Mulligan, played just fine, but it was too little, she was almost not given to express emotions, she had quite few lines, and, as a result, I did not feel this dizzying lightness and grace of the heroine of the book. And in the end, she was treated gently, compared to the finale of the book, which turned my opinion about the characters upside down.
Here, in the annoying minuses of the picture can be attributed to the soundtrack. I love dubstep. I like some of Jay-Z's songs. But when the characters have to peacefully drink tea and talk about nonsense - they start, sorry for the expression, booze and fight with pillows under "I Can't Stop". It's just depressing. As well as the fact that instead of jazz at parties, we hear rap, or light, but still tuber. But without really beautiful compositions of Lana Del Rey was not enough.
I think a little too much romance in the film, it was possible to remove the snot, and expand the philosophy that Fritzgerald tried to convey to us. The ending is perfect, touching, and loads no less similar in the book. Truly a great man, with a delightful appearance, a huge inner world and a big unforgettable dream.
Gatsby.
He put his hands in his pockets and hastened to turn away, as if my presence had violated the solemnity of his sacred vigil. So I went and he was left in the moonlight, a lonely guard with nothing to watch.

I love the work of Scott Fitzgerald. Literally all his novels, and Gatsby in particular. And the trailer that flooded the screens a couple of months ago, I didn't like it to say the least. It wasn't at all what I imagined. And I was very afraid that the picture could repeat the “success” of the recent “Karenina”.
Fortunately, Hollywood decided not to mock their own classics and, miraculously, made a good adaptation! This film is not perfect, of course, it is good.
Yes, in some places it is long, but this is the road to hell, lined with good intentions of the director, who tried his best to stick to the original. And, indeed, many dialogues, situations and emotional experiences literally repeat what was written. This is a rarity these days.
In addition, watching Gatsby is pleasant due to all the brightness and dynamism that tried to put into the film. The picture on the eye screen pleases at least by the fact that it conveys the spirit of jazz New York, which wrote Fitzgerald.
And I was very scared of the ubiquitous 3D. Well, it didn’t seem right, judging by the trailer and the experience of past adaptations. But strangely enough, this time it was almost right! The film opens with a beautiful three-dimensional picture and closes with it. Like I said, it's a pleasure to watch. The music was really good.
A special thank you to DiCaprio for not ruining Jay Gatsby, who was drawn by my imagination. What can not be said about Nick, brought to life by Maguire. Even Daisy Carey Mulligan came out much better than I expected.
Of course, it could have been better. Put other accents, pay less attention to the close-ups of the mansions and brooding faces of the characters, and the ending in the original is somewhat more tragic, but in general, this is a very successful film! It conveys the spirit of the era, and this is what the author sought in his time. You don't have to want to.
I wanted to say that I had high hopes for this film and had been waiting for it for several months. I didn’t read the book, but the trailer was very impressive. The second day after the premiere, I watched. And this is what I got...
Initially, I was seduced by the era in which the action takes place – the “golden 20s”, the heyday of America before the crisis: all the partying, carelessness, etc. Given the experience of Baz Luhrmann in the production of Moulin Rouge, the entertainment of the film did not disappoint. Everything is bright, colorful, eyes run away from the abundance of everything: luxurious costumes, house design. Immediately there is a desire to get to this time, to feel like a part of Gatsby parties.
You can't miss the soundtrack. Although there are both rap and pop songs, but they fit organically, so you can really enjoy the music, given that in most films it is usually not too noticeable.
But that's where everything wonderful for me ended.
As for the actors, DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher more or less coped with their task. They managed to convey the emotions of their heroes. Looking at the main character, I wanted her face to show at least something, except indifference to everything that is happening around. And yes, the shadow of Spider-Man slips in Tobey Maguire, well, he does not get out of this image completely. He remains to some extent childish and sometimes it is not possible to take events seriously because of this face.
The story was supposed to reveal the tragedy of Gatsby, but personally I saw only a man who stubbornly did not want to see that his ex-lover is not too eager to throw his native place next to her husband and throw himself into the arms of Gatsby. I did not feel any deep meaning that makes me really think after watching the film.
In general, the film can and should be watched, spend 2.5 hours of life on it, but it may not cause much excitement. And yet, after watching, I wanted to read the original work, suddenly it will be more interesting. Which means the movie isn’t that bad. In general,
Naive boy Nick Carraway comes to New York to saddle the American dream, and settles next to the mansion of the mysterious party king Jay Gatsby. Soon Nick finds himself in the sight of a millionaire, and falls into the world of dreams, lies, betrayal and further down the list.
As you know, reading books before watching the film adaptation is harmful. Therefore, since I had not bothered to take up Fitzgerald’s work before, it is certainly not worth starting now. Let’s take a closer look at the words of director Baz Luhrmann, which is actually discussed in the second largest American book.
Director Luhrman, this is John Wu from the melodrama. He, like Wu with his pigeons and two-barrel shootouts, also likes to make things happen for a reason: large-scale, epic, tragic, psychedelic and others. What he can, Baz has long demonstrated in the wild modernized adaptation of Romeo + Juliet and the colorful colorful musical Moulin Rouge. It was immediately clear that Luhrman would not change his habits, so it remained to hope that by some miracle the long history would organically fit into the intricate style of the author.
Focus, frankly, doesn't burn out very much. It never leaves the feeling that the film has a literary source, which the director is trying to embellish, clumsily supplement (some dialogues perfectly freeze) and crush with assertiveness. Jay Gatsby still does not have time to appear on the screen, and he has long been a full member of the story, whose role is inflated to the level of an epic hero. The parties that Jay regularly arranges are something decorated with a sharp rattling soundtrack that conjures up both Marie-Antunette and Monster of Parties at the same time, and the events themselves reminded me very much of the even more controversial component of the movie Across the Universe, which was remembered by a rare reverse case of “what I sing, I see” (here, though without a musical, but similar is also noticed) and unnatural fabulous emotional attacks. And even when the veil of Bourne's identity... Gatsby slowly begins to fall, and we are slowly brought down from heaven to earth, still the fact remains that the director tries to give this story a much greater meaning, contrary to what it claims. Nick (or Frances) without much pressure (thank you for that) denounces the cursed aristocracy in heartlessness, and women in indecision and desire to take a place more comfortable, but the cumbersomeness of Luhrmann’s style so shouts about it, as if rediscovering America. Perhaps once it was, but now without sarcasm this story can not be seen. Perhaps this is the problem of the original source, which still turns out to be not such a work for centuries, as it is presented.
As a result, a rather glamorous and unnatural film adaptation (and what did you expect?), where DiCaprio for some reason again begins to seem like a hero of the Titanic. But as a simple movie, the film is quite capable of surprising and delivering aesthetic pleasure, because what we wanted from Luhrmann as a visionary, in Gatsby is present in full. 3D volume.
- You can't go back to the past. - Of course you can, old man!
To confess to you, seeing the trailer for this film, I thought I had found one worthy adaptation of a literary work. And what do you think, no mistake. It's a really good movie. But about everything in order
Let's start with the soundtrack. And he was brilliant. Despite the excessive sonority, the rivers were wonderfully suited to the action taking place on the screen. The soundtrack is so precise that everyone will like it. There are powerful beats, and light, slightly sad tracks from Lana Del Rey, The XX, Florence + the Machine, and tearful songs that excite the viewer, and of course not without jazz inserts, wonderfully reflecting the atmosphere of that time.
Keep going. We have his majesty, the plot. To my delight, the film was as close as possible to the original work. And this was observed in almost everything, right down to the lines of Gatsby himself. In general, it is not worth talking about the plot, since those who have already read this wonderful work know how everything will be. And those who haven’t read it, I don’t think they’ll be very happy if they read a bunch of spoilers.
Let's move on to the picture. To begin with, there is nothing to watch in 3D, since the film is completely based on the plot, not on the volume of the picture. So the film without 3D looks very colorful, which is very pleasing to the eye. Probably 70% thanks to the colorfulness of this film fascinates the viewer from the first minutes.
As for the cast, everything here, again, is done flawlessly. I won’t say too much and just say that DiCaprio, Maguire and Mulligan look great on the screen. Their acting is so sensual in this film that the viewer himself begins to believe that DiCaprio is Gatsby and with him experience his problems.
In conclusion, we can say that “The Great Gatsby” is one of the best adaptations of literary works in the last “N” years.
10 out of 10
You know, it is probably a shame to write about the film adaptation of a book that I have not even read, although Fitzgerald would be worth reading, but this is the case when the film pushes its viewer to the source, incites in him the desire to read the whole book from crust to crust, without missing any important detail, because the film, no matter how chic it was, once viewed will not give a complete picture of the story. Now to the point.
The film is atmospheric, contrasting, looks in one breath, the chic game of actors absolutely resembling their roles gives results - you completely plunge into the 20s, try not to miss something important, once again admire the character of Leonardo DiCaprio, and in general, the shooting, the ideological content is riveted, but the legendary chic parties under Beyonce and Jay-Z could not but put in a stupor. Although, if we talk about the disadvantages, then, perhaps, modernity is the only thing that looks ridiculous.
As for the semantic load, it is necessary to grow to its understanding. Really. It’s not just a “fire of hope,” not just an “all-consuming love,” not necessarily a “naive Gatsby.” It's more, much more. This is a set of stylistically intertwined lines, if exaggerated, then: about black and white, about money and the absence of such, about a bottomless soul and empty brains, about classes. It's silly to list, you know.
But one thing is definitely important. No matter how hopeful Gatsby’s “life” was, Nick’s father was right: “If you ever want to judge someone, remember that not all people in the world have the advantages you have.” After all, some of these “advantages” a hundred times more.
So,
And while I like Baz Luhrmann's handwriting, it seems that this time his quirky post-modern play didn't work. And surprisingly, the “spirit of Gatsby”, the decadence of the first half of the 20s, when a poor little-educated guy rushes up for love, not understanding the device of the world, where everyone is ruled by calculation, is much better felt in those already signature scenes of the carnival, when crowds of people incendiary dance in costumes of that era to remixes of rapper Jay-Z, who managed to mix in a bright memorable cocktail Biyonce, Lana del Ray, Emily Sande, some hipster bands with jazz, swing and fox, and finishing class.
But in those scenes when the viewer must begin to empathize with the characters, suddenly everything begins to fall into a rather cheap melodrama. And it seems that there was an attempt to tell about that senseless attempt to vehemently change the past, for the sake of a bright future, in which the main tragedy of Gatsby lies (Leonardo DiCaprio again played well, but in this film, he was the only one who tried). And this idea fit perfectly with the post-modern play of Luhrmann, who tried to resurrect the past in form, but because of the inability of man to repeat the past, he does it by the methods of today, with video clip editing and hip-hop on the soundtrack. And this even gives timeless relevance to the first half of the film, because all this chic and brilliance of decadence of the post-war period was doomed to the Great Depression, just as the rebels of the 60-70s. by the early 80s saw the “last days of disco”, if you use the name of another tape, which also marked the collapse of ideals, and what is more interesting, all this even falls on the same “MTV generation”, which was also subject to tragic rock in the best film of Lourman “Romeo + Giulet”. And it did not escape the collapse of the second half of the 2000s, which they did not know, indulged in babbling in the 90s.
Nor did Gatsby, whose attempt to regain love lived within a fading world, whose values were depreciating with each passing day. His attempt to live by the rules of the game of the “age of innocence”, to play in the field of the last aristocrats of America, to achieve love at the expense of wealth, to offer a response to “marriage of convenience” was doomed. A new New York was being built, a multi-ethnic cauldron that no longer had the privileges of the rich inhabitants of the East End, and all those crazy parties were just a feast during the plague. The era of lost youth, who experienced the First World War, and the country received seemingly endless economic profits.
But the whole motif, seemingly subtly grasped by Luhrmann, is gradually pushed into the far box to bring to the screen a mannerist melodrama that is too bland to be kitsch, too playful to be sensual. And even becomes unwittingly sorry for the director, who could make a good movie, but at some point lost the thread, falling into a literal retelling of the text by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
A strange impression comes when watching The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann. On the one hand, you want to hang yourself a whiplash slap when the screen is suddenly filled by a gaggy orgy of idle frenzy splashing in the Disneyland mansion, which is accompanied by a suddenly sounding dubstep. What is it? Another Moulin Rouge style ball? But if you withstand all this acid-bright extravaganza, enveloped by the accompaniment of postmodernism, then in the second half of the film, which with its more or less calm tone leads a stunned viewer, the thought slips that everything is far from so bad. Luhrman unexpectedly carefully transfers the events of the book to the wide screen, with all perfectly justified assumptions and omissions, introducing Fitzgerald’s work into the framework of the cinema world.
The first meeting between Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby after five years apart. A tense face, hands in the pockets of a perfect suit, awkward looks and a languishing note of waiting for a moment hanging in the air. That’s when it becomes clear that Baz Luhrman is not building another cinematic scrap, on which you could easily put a stamp “on motives”. After this episode, during which even the beating of his own heart increases, the film derails a glittering costumed blockbuster, with every minute more wrapped in the canvas created once by Fitzgerald. In the canvas of the collapse of the dream of an individual. Yes, Luhrman is monstrously mistaken, trying to prove to everyone that a dream can be given tangible outlines and in this endeavor too frankly inscribed in his own creation literary metaphors. No tangible, real charm can be compared to what a person can accumulate in the depths of his imagination, and therefore the indifferent look of blue eyes, the poisonous dust billowing around the illusory aspiration of Jay Gatsby, or the green light on the other side of the strait, which is destined to go out, heralding the false completion of the construction of the “monument” to the beloved woman look nothing more than visual experimentation.
But this mistake can be forgiven, as can be forgiven and the monstrous musical design of the first half of the film. After all, when the days of the last summer of Jay Gatsby hang on the boiling point, and the vicious rumors surrounding the hero almost drown out his own immaculate aspirations, Luhrman finally kneels before the book, bringing the story to the only true and correct end, to retreat from which would be to betray everything. To betray the magnificent creation of Fitzgerald, to betray the viewer who has finally frozen in tension, to betray the very essence of the loud fall, which turns years of efforts of a man who created himself. Gatsby has really run his whole life. He ran in a vain attempt to reach the mystical light of his grandiose aspirations. And he did not want to understand that his slender ship could at any moment throw back that very insidious past that is invariably fundamentally, but which so cleverly manages to change the present. The shadows of unspoken interjections running through the lips always betray genuine interest, and scoundrels in a wrapper of money and all-consuming carelessness break people like ordinary things. Baz Luhrmann is able to convey this to the viewer, which means that everything is not yet lost in this world, and even stumbling in an attempt to attract as many viewers as possible, “The Great Gatsby” has the right to make history. It is impossible to change the past, youth and beauty of aspirations have already been postponed for the sake of creating air castles. The fog of lies once again enveloped Long Island, concealing within itself a flame of hope that had been extinguished in a vain struggle. The incredible happiness of the future slipped away again, this time for good.
Green light in my eyes... I read the book, I was waiting for the movie. I hoped that the film will bring the book to life, will not be a full adaptation, because reading even the classics you can get bored if you are not hooked by history. To say that the film lived up to my expectations - nothing to say, it is obvious from high praise. Atmosphere of the film The whole group managed to recreate the atmosphere of the 20s. Glowing from many lights New York, chic parties, costumes, hairstyles, scenery ... I don’t want to compare this film with Moulin Rouge (for the non-advanced – they have one director – Baz Lurman), but the part with sparkling fun is chic in both films. Gradually, all the fun is lost, pales in the background of the events, but luxury and beauty remain with you until the final. Activity I was very afraid of Tobey Maguire, because I always treated him only as Peter Parker, and in all other projects he appeared as a superman with a web out of his hands. My expectations were not met, for which I am very grateful to both Toby and Baz and the casting team for the excellent choice. Leo with his smile is stunning (if I were Daisy...uh). I have always had warm feelings for Cary Mulligan and she captivated me from the start in the white tulle scene. The actors were not just pretty faces in a cool suit / chic dress, and each of them created an image that throughout the film made you believe that this person was really. Scenario I’ve already seen a lot of book lovers (most likely even fans) complain about the film. But, friends, let's be reasonable. A perfect film adaptation would not work. If I had it, it would have been a different movie, and I honestly don’t know if many people would have liked it, but I wouldn’t. The book lacked the dynamism of the film. And it is worth admitting that there is even some poetry in the film, it is beautiful, consistent. Despite its long duration, its compositional construction does not pass anywhere (which happens very often in films more than 90 minutes). Music Courage. That’s what all the creators and producers of this film have in common. It was very brave to combine modern hip-hop music with that time. But the experiment went well. Driving rhythms were diluted with classics (New York – Gershwin), melancholy songs from the fashionable now Florence and the Machine and Lana Del Rey. I listened to the soundtrack for this film a few days before the premiere, so 5 minutes before the start of the session, lines from Young and Beautiful from Miss Del Rey were spinning in my head. Baz Luhrman has already proven that he knows how to select music for films, so I personally have no complaints. The only downside is that, as much as I would like to compare this film to Moulin Rouge, I couldn’t help but do it. Even after leaving the cinema, I did not leave the feeling of deja vu - a bright beginning, the middle - full of love and tenderness, making me think about the finale ... Although I realize that words can not be thrown out of the book, but it was worth trying. Oh, there's another downside. To my deepest regret, I was in a 3D session and I wanted to ask the question: why did I make a film in this format? Why did you need these simple 3D techniques in the picture itself? The result was a good amount, a great mood and not a disappointed viewer. 9 out of 10 Original
The appearance of this film at the box office I was especially looking forward to. In record time I read Fitzgerald’s novel and on the way to the movies I knew that there would be no disappointment. It really wasn't there.
There was admiration for Baz Luhrmann’s incredibly subtle sense of acting. This choice is a perfect target in terms of how close it is to reproducing the characters of the novel and my personal perception of them as a reader first and then as a spectator. I was delighted with the carnival-shattered presentation of the novel, thanks to which the handwriting of Baz Luhrmann is visible, and it can no longer be confused with someone else. I think visually and musically the Great Gatsby continues the tradition of Romeo+Juliet and Moulin Rouge. And maybe if you look at this director's work as a whole, I would recommend watching these films as a trilogy, because that's how you see progress over the years. In addition, it will be quite interesting to see the creative evolution of Leonardo DiCaprio, comparing the absolutely different, but equally talented Romeo and Jay Gatsby.
Decorations and costumes are a separate subject. They deserve the highest praise, because thanks to them during viewing there is a feeling of grandeur of everything that happens on the screen and a feeling of involvement in this unbridled holiday. Feathers, sequins, tinsel, gold, beads - and now you are ready to dance Charleston.
Returning to music, I can’t help but note how skillfully Luhrmann once again manages to combine such different musical styles. To present R’n’B so that it sounds like jazz, and thereby demonstrate to the audience that despite completely different times and generations, our life and our essence do not change, only true genius can. And today there are the same burners of life, ready to party, condemning the hosts of these same parties, based only on speculation and gossip, hovering in society. And there are people like Gatsby who are relentlessly pursuing their dreams, their green light, which illuminates their lives with meaning that some of us will never find.
Someone scolds Baz Luhrmann for being too glamorous and deliberately luxurious of his films, but in my opinion, "too good" is not a bad thing in this film. The splendor of outfits, beckoning lights of parties, champagne by the river, dancing until you drop, rolling jazz rhythms are symbols of that era, and the atmosphere of the 20s is conveyed as best as possible through such even a grotesque film adaptation of Fitzgerald.
You can crumble for a long time in compliments to the director and talk about the endless advantages of the picture. But I just want to say one more thing: Should I read Fitzgerald? - Absolutely. Should I watch after reading Luhrmann? - Absolutely. For his "Great Gatsby" turned out really great.

Reading all the opinions about this film, you realize that the film is not very worth it. So many people, so many opinions.
The fact that the film was made based on the book, without any deviations from it - I was wildly pleased. That's all right, nothing superfluous.
The roaring twenties, as they are called, are described and shown just fine. This story is initially tragic and sad, despite all that brilliance and chic. Behind every smile lies a sad story. Behind every grimace of carelessness, one can see longing and hopelessness. After all, it quickly becomes boring and alluring parties are no longer so pleasant.
If someone thinks that the soundtrack does not fit into this film, they are wildly mistaken. It is this soundtrack that gives the film its charm and conveys the spirit of partying. And then, this “inappropriate soundtrack” includes only a couple of songs of famous modern authors. In general, all the music was chosen correctly.
About the whole story described. Did you expect anything else from Fitzgerald? This author, like no other, conveys the spirit of the time.
It seems to me that you can not watch this film with the expectation of unrestrained fun and carelessness. This story is as tragic as it is.
Gatsby has an idea that he's been working on for years but never achieved. A man can achieve anything if he wants it very much. Gatsby almost succeeded.
Baz Luhrman methodically makes a movie about love - and what else to make films for a romantic Australian? The most beautiful and bright human feeling was dedicated to Romeo + Juliet, Australia, Dancing without rules and, of course, the unforgettable Moulin Rouge. The latest adaptation of the classic novel by American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald “The Great Gatsby” was no exception.
United States, 1922. The era of smuggled alcohol, roaring jazz and incredible glamorous parties, which, bathing in pools and champagne, burn the money and life of the kings of this world.
A young writer from the Midwest Nick Carraway moves to literally radiating wild fun, seething and bubbling with energy New York, where he soon abandons attempts to “stain” paper and tries to make money on the stock exchange. He rents a small house on the shore of a picturesque bay, by pure chance located next to the luxurious apartments of millionaire Jay Gatsby, famous for his rampant feasts, whose image is covered with a halo of mystery.
Gatsby is rumored to be a close relative of the German Kaiser, or the owner of an incredible inheritance of early deceased parents, or a German spy. What is there - most of those revelers who are fully entertained in his castle every weekend, the owner of the estate and in the eyes did not see!
However, once an eccentric millionaire suddenly descends from his inaccessible sky to make friends with a not too lucky financier, and turns out to be quite a living person with a dazzling smile and a secret that Nick will learn in the near future.
I will not talk about further plot twists and turns: who has read the novel, and so knows them, and for everyone else let them reveal themselves while watching this extraordinary, with great inspiration made a film from a director who is not afraid to experiment.
Branded video sequence, as if borrowed from a collection of vintage postcards, “restless” camera, which rapidly flies through the streets of New York in the 20s of the last century, dives from a skyscraper and sweeps between the slings of a suspension bridge, as well as a magnificent cast and a delightful soundtrack – all this we have already seen in “Moulin Rouge”. But with all the secondary techniques and chips used, Gatsby does not leave the impression of self-plagiarism - still, unlike the magnificent, but still musical, the new film of the master has a strong literary basis.
This is an interesting, dramatic story of an incredibly strong man who persistently, spending all his inner strength without a trace, went to his goal. The man who loved...
I liked “Gatsby” almost everyone – even superfluous for such a retro project 3D did not annoy. It has already listed the director’s tricks, 100% getting into the role of Leonardo DiCaprio (when will this great actor finally get the Oscar?!), and another second bottom, because, in addition to the story of beautiful love, the film has something to think about.
In addition, the undoubted advantages of “The Great Gatsby” include the desire to read a book that, without a doubt, is much deeper, more expressive and more serious than the film adaptation. However, this is almost always the case, but we do not want to see your favorite novel filmed page by page - it will be boring, no matter how twisted. But in the original author's film interpretation - always curious. Especially in the transcription of a master like Baz.
I know that critics are mercilessly kicking Luhrmann’s new work, accusing him of mixing eras (well, how can jazz and rap combine?!), but this is their job. With the attention of the audience, everything is much better – in America, Gatsby earned more than $ 50 million in the first weekend alone. Well, great start! And he speaks eloquently about the fact that most viewers don’t care deeply about humiliating assessments – they are much more important than a well-told story. And I am one of them...
Perhaps my review will not be marked with a green icon, but I still want to write about my impression of this film. Yes, exactly impressions. This is the most important thing for me in cinema, not the actors-directors-writers, and not whether it was shown in Cannes and by whom it was filmed.
At first, watching the breathtaking atmosphere of the 20s, beckoning with its extraordinary beauty and some frivolity, it seemed to me that all this was too playful. Later, my feeling was not justified.
This film tells the story of an incredibly strong spirit of a man who lived at a time when, apparently, the material began to prevail over eternal values. This is evidenced by the disrespect of a husband towards his wife, and people who want endless fun, who are in the house of a person about whom they absolutely know nothing.
There is love here, but can you call it that? It's more of a misconception about her. With what passion James Getz (real name Gatsby) broke into the world of luxury, with such he created for himself the image of Daisy. It's just an image, but it's a blank.
But there are 2 people who are unusually different from everyone else. This, of course, is Gatsby, as well as the one on whose behalf the narrative is being told - Nick Carraway. Nick was the only one who understood Gatsby, the man with Great Hope, and was able to realize the sadness of what was happening.
The main character in a conversation with Nick says that the past can be returned. But should I? After all, this beautiful, existing only in dreams, unfortunately, differs from real life, not always fair.
I understand that my rather confused thoughts need to be diluted with specific estimates, otherwise it is not very clear what I am trying to convey.
I have a second favorite actor, Leonardo DiCaprio. This is not the handsome man from the Titanic, but an amazing and talented man.
Do not judge the director about the discrepancy of the film with the work of Francis Fitzgerald. This is his vision, and certainly it cannot fully coincide with what the author of the work himself wanted to convey to us. In addition, the content is transferred quite close to the text, there are key phrases of the novel, although there are significant differences. The picture is perfect for me, well, very beautiful!
Of course, I bet 10 out of 10, here I had no doubts, my wet eyes and surprised look of a friend after watching will not let you lie.
The Great Gatsby disappointed me. And not even because Leonardo DiCaprio turned into one big fold on his forehead.
Honestly, I can’t even say what more spoiled his expectations or real shortcomings. Of the latter, I can distinguish a strange emptiness in the place of heroes who should be sympathetic. I was suspiciously unsympathetic to walking from the beginning. And then it turned out that the role of DiCaprio is not going well and that’s it. He frowned very hard. But with him, the critic frowned at me. "Comrade! A simpler face, huh?
Daisy, according to Mulligan, succeeded brilliantly: it was such an empty, naive and meaningless woman she was in the book. I did not see the book in the eyes, but as one of the leading characters of the film ... Yes, a mega-interesting character.
I was on Maguire. But his most emotional and exciting scene came in the rattling of pots in the sink. Bravo, of course, but somehow not enough for two and a half hours.
Of the untouchable advantages of the film - the opportunity to bravely worship the visual feast of the picture. That's what, and operators and special effects have arranged just an art gallery. The film is remembered by the colors and artistic decision of individual frames. The way they look cannot be ignored. Everything from the fluffy, white snow that stuck to the window to the faded blue banner with the “eyes of God” cut into my working memory. It seems that Fitzgerald’s book was drawn, capturing the importance of tiny details.
And against the background of such lively and bright colors, the plot itself along with the actors seems terribly faded.
I didn’t even like the music at all. Pick up a couple of moves on a good wave, pick up a memorable soundtrack and Gatsby would instantly soar in price. And so it is something else: completely flew in an unknown direction.
As an apprentice to DiCaprio, it was a shame to watch this case. He didn't do the part. This playful tender-suffering look...Fe, Mr. Leo, just fe.
The chair for the Vip persona "exciting story" is, of course, empty. But if this is not taken into account, then in general the film is memorable. However, you should go to it without any expectations.
I spoke these words with tears in my eyes at the climax. Oh, how wrong you were, Gatsby! The Great Gatsby.
This film is a presentation Base Luhrmann about the classics of the jazz era. It turned out very bright (Lurman’s feature is familiar to everyone), beautiful, incendiary and most importantly sensual. Of course, there were minuses.
1920s. The Jazz Age. Prohibition. The moral decay of society. Champagne is pouring! Dancing nonstop! The dresses are gorgeous! The decorations are huge! And emptiness in the shower. The concepts of “morality, principles, spiritual qualities” were lost against the background of gloss and soullessness.
Mr. Luhrman well reflected these qualities in the gloss and glamour, which have already managed to scold the audience, which is very in vain. Look at this! Do you see faces there? Nope. Only wild greed in alcohol, dancing, tinsel.
Who's Gatsby? Who is this rich organizer of the brightest parties?
Jay Gatsby always wanted to be a part of this life. But, in fact, it was alien to him. He lived with hope. No, she was his life. He followed the green light in the hope that his old love would return to him. He was sure of that.
He was so passionate about bringing back the past.
I was completely immersed in the intrigue that developed so sensually between the characters.
Leonardo DiCaprio impressed. You can't believe him. It was as if he had passed through all the emotions that Gatsby was so overwhelmed with. I cried when he talked about his dream. His play made me freeze, I experienced aesthetic pleasure looking at him. Just above all praise.
Many viewers have wondered: what did Gatsby find so good in Nick Caraway? Nick stood out among the “elite” of society with his simplicity, credulity and special view of things. Toby Maguire has always had such roles and this is no exception.
Here we go to Daisy. Oh, that Daisy. I believed in her love for Gatsby. And I was very surprised by this final turn. Carey Mulligan did well. It's a borderline feeling: I love / don't love, she played hurrah.
Also note Elizabeth Debicki, Isla Fisher and Joel Edgerton, who were very colorful, especially the latter.
A little bit about the music, which also caused a lot of controversy among the audience. It was good and appropriate, but I wish I had more time. But hip-hop was not the topic at all. If others were still interpreted under the 20s of the XX century, then this music absolutely did not fit.
There was a strange feeling that we were not in the 1920s. I can’t explain why this is due to the influence of modern music and brightness.
I cried at the end. I felt sorry for Gatsby. What kind of people, used his hospitality, supposedly respected, and then once! and forgot. Even Daisy. The one for which he did so much work, for which he got up in the morning and went to bed in the evening.
Oh, Gatsby, they're nothing. You alone are worth all of them put together.
I didn’t read the book and went to the movies with a completely wrong expectation of a movie for real men. Such misconceptions could easily be avoided, for example, watching what genre of the film, but in this case there would be no review from a person indifferent to melodramas.
From the very beginning, there is a feeling of some confusion of pace, that the director is trying to fit a sufficiently voluminous book into the timing of the tape and it stubbornly does not fit there. Over time, this feeling passes, and ample compensated by a beautiful picture. I, not visually, was pleased to look at famous actors in chic costumes against the backdrop of luxurious interiors. The spectacle is not rare, but in this case it looks appropriate and spectacular.
All this beauty appears to the songs of artists on the crest of the wave. The uncouth parties of American youth from the past look very organically like Jay-Z and Lana Del Rey.
I liked DiCaprio, but in my opinion, given what his previous outstanding work he did not win an Oscar, apparently he is disliked seriously, and for such a film I would not expect awards in his place. Carey Mulligan was also very fond of her image. With regard to Tobey Maguire, there was a feeling that he was selected in order to be the background for the bright DiCaprio.
Didn't say a word about the plot. Apparently, the novel is not devoid of ideas, but they are not so much that after watching the film there is a desire to read the book. I don't know if it's a film adaptation, but this is the case.
As a result, I recommend girls and impressionable boys with an ardent heart.

How many people talked and wrote about the film Baz Luhrmann.
He predicted the Oscar this year, but the director did not like the editing, and he postponed the premiere for months. And now, finally, it happened: the villa of Jay Gatsby opened for the world audience.
No wonder Luhrman delayed the release of the picture. In the final version, everything is so thought out, beautiful, dynamic, lush that you do not have time even for a minute to get bored in two and a half hours.
Luhrmann managed to impeccably convey the era described by Fitzgerald in his novel. Luxury, luxury and again luxury. In the book Francis Scott plunges us into the world of Gatsby with the help of words, in the film Baz Luhrman creates a sense of excess, wealth, even sweetness due to the magnificent shooting. Gatsby created the illusion of well-being, and we plunge into it with our heads.
The heavy jazz luxury of the era is best conveyed by music. Soundtracks, and especially the songs of two divas – Florence and the machine and Lana del Rey – fit perfectly into the picture. The song Young and Beautiful, which conquered many even before the release of the film, sounds several times, in different arrangements, giving the story of Jay Gatsby a magical character.
And of course Gatsby himself. Leonardo DiCaprio. One of the most thoughtful actors of Golywood.
“He smiled at me affectionately — no, much more than affectionately. Such a smile, full of inexhaustible encouraging power, manages to meet four, well – five times in his life. – Nick Carraway describes his meeting with Jay Gatsby, so we meet Leonardo DiCaprio, surrounded by the turmoil of his party. There is so much warmth in that smile, so much sadness and hope in those loving eyes, yet almost every scene in his face reflects the note of doubt that Fitzgerald wrote about. A rich man living one hope, one dream, one woman. Impeccable, great diCaprio, able to convey everything, forcing to live and breathe with his character. His woman, Carey Mulligan, a "careless creature" made up a fine diCaprio acting couple. It has the chic and luxury of the 30s, the languor of that time and ease.
Baz Luhrman created a beautiful movie, with talented actors, luxurious scenery, magnificent soundtracks. And his film, of course, waiting for awards and recognition of the audience.
So we try to swim forward, fighting the current, and it blows everything and blows our boats back into the past.
Loud music, rhythms and beats, rocking hot bodies, a sea of alcohol, colorful colors, champagne splashes, neon glow, tinsel and a sparkling stream of turbulent life, charged with the energy of permissiveness, when skirts become shorter, neckline deeper, thoughts are relaxed and actions are bolder. It is a world of the rich and famous, a world where money and connections rule the ball. Artificial unnatural world, in which there are no real feelings and emotions, there are only masks on faces and emptiness in the soul. About this and much more tells the book that has become a classic – “The Great Gatsby” by Francis Scott Fitzgerald.
The novel, which was published in 1925, became one of the best examples of the era of the Lost Generation, and Fitzgerald was one of the best writers of his time. With hidden sadness, he wrote about a society sliding into moral decay and decay, about a hero who is alien to this society and cannot find his place in the world around him. An idealist and romantic by nature, one who bears the imprint of the First World War, which became a catharsis of horror and pain for many creative people and the consequences of which were felt for many years. They even concern us. Through works and films.
Baz Luhrman faithfully approached the film adaptation of this piercing and incredibly subtle novel. The plot is the same, the characters are the same, only the wrapper has become more sonorous and modern, brighter and more colorful. In my opinion, the film only benefited from this. The atmosphere of overwhelming sadness, romance and lostness has not gone away, the pursuit of a ghostly dream and hope still forms the basis of the narrative. The film just became more modern and adapted to our age. And incredibly stylish.
The tragedy of Jay Gatsby is the tragedy of the entire Lost Generation. An idealist and a romantic, a man who created himself out of nothing, a man of amazing breadth of views, he cannot get along in modern society. It seems to him faceless, boring, empty and worthless. All these idle parties, the main essence of which is the consumption of alcohol and dancing until you drop. His delicate soul demands otherwise. Something real, unspoiled, natural and deep. He sees it in Daisy Buchanan. He creates an ideal for himself from her, and she turns out to be a simple empty space, not aware of all the breadth of the soul and the extraordinaryness that a person has that he has loved her so sincerely and strongly for many years. She doesn't need it. She is comfortable in the environment she lives in and doesn’t want to change anything. The only person who understood Gatsby and his aspirations, but who remained a much greater realist, not a sky-high romantic, was Nick Carraway. A real man in this crazy motley world and the only true friend of Jay Gatsby.
In my opinion, actors fall into book images. Leonardo DiCaprio has never been more romantic since Titanic, and the subtlety of his playing makes Jay Gatsby the way F.S. Fitzgerald wrote it. Tobey Maguire perfectly embodies his hero, slightly ridiculous and unsightly, feeling like a stranger in this world of the rich and famous and remaining the most real among the external facade and false smiles. There is something unearthly about Cary Mulligan in this role. Light and airy, she flies through life, as did the book Daisy Buchanan. I really liked Isla Fisher. So bright and catchy. And Joel Edgerton was good.
"The Great Gatsby" Baz Luhrmann is a bright phantasmagoria, seasoned with motley splashes of colors and shades of life. Stylish, modern, it celebrates the loneliness of one man, misunderstood and abandoned, idealist and romantic, living his dream and its indispensable embodiment in life. But this very life is cruel. Gatsby can be accused of naivety, fanaticism, but this will not change the fact that people with such inexhaustible faith and hope, who know how to love so much, who see this world differently from others, much wider and deeper, are one. F.S. Fitzgerald created the image of a man who does not know his place and desperately tries to find it. And Baz Luhrman carefully brought it to the screen.
I started looking at this movie a long time ago. Good cast, great director, graceful book for film adaptation. Everything said that the film will be one of the best in 2013, and it lived up to the wildest expectations. Perhaps film critics or philologists will find flaws in this film adaptation of the novel, which became iconic many years after publication. But for me everything is fine.
Luhrman is not the first film on a “historical” theme, that is, the film adaptation of some stories. For example, the ambiguous Moulin Rouge film, in which he made his edits, they gave the film an attractive, modern look and the viewer went. So it is here: beautiful scenes in the trailer, modern music for the age of jazz. Luhrman presented his interpretation, the one he wanted to show the viewer and did not lose his choice. Baz made such a cunning marketing move - he gave connoisseurs just a name, and inexperienced people a colorful trailer that shows all the splendor of Gatsby parties - songs, dances, in general, the show mast go he. But this was not the case, the book is not about that, and the priorities begin to shift, the colors thicken and begin what Fitzgerald meant, namely Gatsby, Carraway and all honest company.
I found the division interesting, it was presented by the same Luhrman, the film is divided into two parts: before and after. Such a light film about the twenties first and drama later. Not for nothing, probably, chose to open Cannes; they have it too: a colorful discovery, but then serious films. Behind the beauty is the thought of Fitzgerald, many quotes from the book are conveyed verbatim in the form of Nick’s voiceover. And in general, the novel is conveyed in its own way, but following the text.
In his film, he used 3D, which surprised many, because usually dramas are not shot in this format. However, Luhrman said he wanted to better convey the atmosphere. Perhaps in Imax it is better, but in ordinary 3D colors are not so bright, so the essence of his actions I did not understand, but it did not prevent the perception of the film.
In addition to directing, there are other pleasant moments of performance. Actors are good. Very. Of course, everyone is eclipsed by the main character - Gatsby, perfectly played by DiCaprio. Tobey Maguire plays the role of an invisible writer, narrator, inconspicuous friend of the Great Gatsby, so it is not worth complaining that his image turned out unsightly, such is his role in this story. Not very famous actress Carrie Mulligan, who played not the last role was also very good. Small roles, such as conductor Jay Gatsby or photographer, friend of Tom, were also pleased; charismatic characters, well-made-up, brought some humor to the serious picture.
Good makeup, unusual installation of both sound and video - the merits of editors. Cinematography - beautiful shots of the bay, great plans for dancing and parties at Gatsby's house or soft shoots at the Buchanan house. And more. Music. Modern Motives for the Old Age. Interesting idea and it did not interfere with the viewing.
Overall, this film is a vision of Gatsby's story on one side. Everyone can have an opinion about this novel. I don’t think I’m going to be very strict, either.
...unless you have had the pleasure of reading the original story masterfully told by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Because, in that case, everything you see on the screen will be taken for granted, as if the story was originally meant to be that way — too bright, fragmentary, and at times frankly shallow.
If you read the novel “The Great Gatsby”, then it will be very difficult for you to find the depth, meaning and beauty of the narrative, which captures from the first page in two hours of clip editing, loud and, in my humble opinion, not quite well-chosen music (however Lurman would like to modernize the 20s, Jay-Z and Kanye West – for the “jazz age” it is still too much) and a banal love story.
Luhrmann’s production of The Great Gatsby can be compared to Joe Wright’s not-so-long-simmering adaptation of Anna Karenina. How much meaning, morality and life conclusions were put into the book by Tolstoy, and as Wright primitively understood it, depicting on the screen the love experiences of a hysterical woman and MORE NOTHING.
And so did the Great Gatsby. To me, Gatsby is a great man, because he was a man endowed with an irrepressible thirst for life, energy, outstanding abilities and a living mind – qualities that could allow him to become one of the greatest men of his era. But he did not become one, because he did not want to - he preferred to dissolve in his dream and in his love for a rich and beautiful wasteland. And Luhrmann’s directorial vision makes Gatsby just a boy, incapable of anything else but the love of his life, which makes this adaptation of Fitzgerald’s immortal novel just another Hollywood melodrama – commercially successful, with well-chosen actors, but devoid of the meaning that could be put into it if you wanted.
P.S. Leonardo DiCaprio played the role of Gatsby in the way he was expected to play, very well. He was an arrogant and closed host of chic parties, a friendly friend, a boy fussing before a date, a happy and luminous, albeit already tragic in love. But this is not his best performance, despite the predictions of many critics.
P.P.S. I hated 3D, as silly as it sounds. For me, 3D is a sign that you want to make as much money as possible from a movie. And it is still tolerable when it is justified by the fact that in this format all the battles, races, ups and downs will look hundreds of times more chic, but to remove Drama? This simply illustrates once again the attitude of Baz Luhrmann to his offspring.
The painting “The Great Gatsby” will allow you to plunge for a couple of hours into the world of ambitious citizens living in America in the 20s. Their weekdays are held for secular conversations and tea parties, and weekends are not complete without parties filled with gloss and chic.
But this film is not about fashion and techniques, it is about all-consuming, filling the mind of love.
What are people willing to do for love?
The protagonist of this film is a respectable young man named Nick Carraway, who settled in an inconspicuous house on Long Island, where quite wealthy citizens live. Nick himself is only an employee in a company on the famous Wall Street and has no means.
By the will of fate, Nick settles in the neighborhood with the famous Gatsby.
Jay Gatsby is introduced to us by a great socialite, in whose house mass festivities are organized with a sea of booze, noisy companies and endless dances. However, this myth hides a unique, according to Nick, personality. A person who has an incredible character and traits is a person who managed to rise from poverty to incredible wealth, who could not lose dignity, honor, kindness, and most importantly, the ability to dream. No matter what, we are going to achieve our goal.
Fate ties Nick and Jay. Gatsby's only love is Nick's cousin Daisy. Daisy is married to socialite rich Tom and is tightly bound by this union. Fate confronts Gatsby and Daisy again after 5 years. And the only means of their renewed love is our hero.
There will be no happy ending in this movie.
Daisy was unable to free herself from her husband’s shackles. In my opinion, she lacked the determination and will to do something that would change her life. She was too dependent on her husband.
Gatsby is a man of honor, he will do anything for love. But the circumstances tragically end the life "The Great Gatsby" .
Nick is left alone in depression and leaves New York. The hero reflects on the person who entered his life, left a deep mark and thinks about the possibility of returning the past.
This picture leaves an impression, everyone has his own - someone has indescribable delight, someone has bitterness from the tragic end, someone makes you think about the eternal questions of life, love and death.
It's up to you...
P.S. And of course, I would like to note the magnificent performance of actors - Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.

There was a great generation - Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, and he was replaced by no less powerful - Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Leo DiCaprio. No actor from this generation has won an Oscar and every year I look forward to it. Waited and now, I was sure that the role of Gatsby is probably an Oscar-winning role for Leo. But apparently not again.
Fitzgerald is one of the icons in literature for Americans. The Great Gatsby fully reflects the American dream of success. I read it at the age of 15, did not understand much, re-read it 10 years later, on the eve of this premiere and already felt the work much more acutely. It is not at all simple, it has all the elements of a psychological great novel. How a person changes, how the environment changes with him, what passions overtake him.
What did Luhrman do in the end? Just like always. This director always makes his Moulin Rouge. Champagne in the frame pours river, everything sparkles, dancing, songs, light. Expensive, stylish, fashionable, I will need a down-to-earth viewer. The novel is not realized on the screen, stunningly weakly played by Tobey Maguire. Leo does his job, but this is not an Oscar and primarily because the director does not make a film about internal changes in a person, but is more passionate about the entourage in the carpet, and this is sad.
I was waiting for a great premiere, and this is just an ordinary one-night stand that I don’t want to review. albeit not a terrible movie, but nothing new.
Maximum
Yesterday at the premiere, I had déjà vu. It's like I'm 6 years old and I find out that Santa Claus is gone. Disappointment and the realization that I was cheated. Here are exactly the same emotions from Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. I was looking forward to the movie, I love the book, Gatsby and Fitzgerald. After reading the book to the holes, watching the trailer until dark in her eyes, she boldly booked a ticket and went.
I waited for the first 10 minutes, and the movie is about to hook me and I'm about to plunge into Nick's world. But there was no miracle. It was incredibly boring, the remaining 100,500 minutes (as I thought) I waited. I was waiting for the movie to end. Where are the characters that are so well written in the novel? You can't look at Daisy without tears. Dummy. Even Leo didn't pull out (on the same Gatsby, from the novel, also badly pulls) I had the distinct feeling that I was watching a bad parody of Moulin Rouge. That's all. It seems that the scenery was in the first place. They just overshadowed the heroes and the whole storyline. Fitzgerald in his coffin would have turned over to Beyonce (although the music was on top). I’m not sure why this movie is in 3D. The 3D effect was supposed to immerse the film, but it wasn’t.
A movie to watch at home when there is nothing to watch.
Initially, I would like to say that I have been waiting for the premiere of this great novel for quite a long time.
The film left behind a double feeling, as if you were simultaneously deceived and given not the product you wanted, but the breath of freshness that you were given is not so bad.
I'll start with the minuses.
1. Toby, he didn't play the way I thought he would. Nick in his performance seemed stupid, provincial boy. And his relationship with Gatsby. The film did not show us the moment when Gatsby became his friend. In essence, we see one person simply using another.
2. Music that was played while dancing. Jay-z and everyone else were ripping you out of the movie, taking you back to the 21st century. But I really wanted to listen to the music of those times, which music was actually held such parties.
3. This, of course, is Nick's relationship with Jordan, which didn't exist at all. Not a hint of sympathy for each other. Nothing happened at all.
4. The finale. I was still hoping for the scene of Nick's meeting with Tom.
Let me get to the pros.
1. Leo is the Gatsby I imagined reading the book. The great performance of this actor can pull any movie. The scene of the meeting with Daisy was played at the URA. You can talk about it for a long time, but is it worth it?
2. Lana Del Rey – Young and Beautiful It's a very good one.
3. It's the atmosphere of the movie. Many people ask, “Why in 3D?” I thought it was a waste of money, but I never regretted going to 3D. The atmosphere is incredible.
4. The director who still adhered to the plot of the book. I was delighted to hear the citation of the novel.
Overall, I liked the film. Maybe it doesn’t make as much sense as the book. But, guys, what show did Baz Luhrman show us, at least for the sake of going to the movies?

How to turn the story of the Great Dream into a melodrama with the color of the times of “dry law”
The Great Gatsby has been my favorite book since I turned the last page.
The transformation of the novel about a man who could turn mountains with his hope and faith into a banal melodrama, reducing the whole idea about the tragedy of the life of an exceptional person to an ordinary love triangle - this is the reason for the success of this film at the mass box office.
Although farcical brilliance and tinsel inherent in the existence of the upper strata of society at that time (though why only then?), also play a role. Easily recognizable style of Baz Luhrmann, which contributed too much Moulin Rouge to the homes of Americans of the 20s, not very much to the place in this novel - although the director's vision was not canceled.
I just want to say that The Great Gatsby is not a story about loving a woman. It’s a legend — like Gatsby himself — about the love of a dream that came to life in a certain person. The green lighthouse outside Daisy's house couldn't get him to reach out - it's too stupid when your very soul is ready to fly across the bay; in a sense, that distance to Jay Gatsby, even if he thought otherwise, was impossible to overcome.
In this one of the few advantages of the picture is quite well shown the difference between a strong, stubborn and, alas, ready to do anything, Goetz of the family of farmers and the four Buchanans who will never be able to overcome the impartiality and carelessness that is absorbed by them with their mother’s milk, in short, representing the kind of people who know how to reason about the significant and great, but are not able to implement it in reality.
The tragedy of Gatsby lies precisely in the fact that what he loved more than anything in the world - Daisy Buchanan, as the embodiment of superiority in birth, wealth, upbringing and (most importantly) complete ignorance of hardship and real life - destroyed him.
It’s not that he didn’t love her, but sad as it was, he loved her for what she was.
That’s what’s missing in the film – the feeling is very simple, Tom Buchanan has gone from a young, healthy and very limited evil fool to an outspoken villain. Already at least outwardly Tom and Gatsby should be at least a little comparable, but in the joint scenes we understand without hesitation that, sorry, DiCaprio is nasha and all in white, and Edgerton is the embodiment of evil.
But both DiCaprio and Mulligan are perfectly matched. Comments are superfluous.
In general, I understand why, in terms of composition, it was necessary to have an episode in the hospital with Nick, but this again deprives him of the “observer” position he occupies. In fact, this would never have happened to Carraway, his heart is much more closed than the filmmakers obviously imagine.
In general, the film was shot: shot well, although not reflecting the main thing. The green lighthouse remained, representing a blurred female figure - yes, that's easier. Perhaps we should be glad that from now on more people will know Fitzgerald. I only hope that after watching The Great Gatsby, no one will say that the film is better.

What are your dreams b>? They appear gradually. First we are aware of them, then we understand their essence, and then our mind and our desires are involved in the process. We rationally and logically put things in their place and begin to really want them to come true. If all our thoughts and all our inner strength are focused on what we dream about, the strong desire of the psyche eventually leads to the fact that our dreams come to life. Sometimes people lack specific means and conditions for the final realization of their dreams, for example, money. Gatsby has enough money to fulfill the dream he is obsessed with, but he did not take into account the factor of reality and the earthiness of most people who will constantly stick him in the wheel.
Writer loser Nick moves to New York and rents a small house in a prestigious area. His neighbor is a certain Gatsby, about whom people tell all sorts of fables, because no one knows the truth about him. Nick receives an invitation to one of the mind-blowing parties of a neighbor, where the entire urban elite gathers. The hero can not imagine why he needed a rich neighbor.
Baz Luhrman is a holiday director, perfect for the film adaptation of Fitzgerald's novel . His style and vision, which he demonstrated in his previous paintings, came in handy here. Masterfully woven: theatricality, absurdity of what is happening and exaltation. The worlds he creates are similar and at the same time completely different, but each time completely captivating the audience.
Script, written by Lurman in collaboration with Craig Pierce, who is working with the director not for the first time. They treat the source very carefully and carefully. The authors removed only unnecessary characters, additional storylines and most of the internal monologues of Nika, which only benefited the project. In contrast to the recent "Straight Holiday" they did not forget to provide the film with conclusions that were spoken in the book.
Leonardo DiCaprio perfectly entered the role of an idealist and a dreamer, subtly and vividly beating his Gatsby.
Joel Edgerton perfectly played the controversial and near character Tom Buchanan.
Carrie Mulligan beautifully depicted Daisy as she sees her.
Elizabeth Debicki, Ayla Fisher and Edelade Clemens played small, but important for the plot images, managing to be remembered by the audience.
Toby Maguire, as always, portrayed himself, he was lucky to do just that.
Jason Clark appeared in a couple of episodes, but his character played an important role in the plot of the picture.
Simon Dagan has created a real world of diversion and permissiveness, camera work done at the highest level.
3D in the film in order to further emphasize the ideas of the authors about the richness and capabilities of the characters.
Subtitles and the original soundtrack give the picture additional piquancy, subtexts and full understanding of the actor.
Music, like the city, becomes one of the main participants in the film, without it the project would not have taken place. Mixing most of the known genres, the authors created a real musical extravaganza, which, like the soundtrack "Moulin Rouge" will not be forgotten soon. The composer also used compositions in the film, which Fitzgerald wrote about in draft versions of the novel.
The film turned out very beautiful, it is a dream film that everyone has a green light of hope and success ahead.
To begin with, I have not read Fitzgerald’s novel. And I did it intentionally, because I decided to watch the movie first and then read the book, because when you do the opposite, you immediately lose the opportunity to enjoy the film, instead you only do that look for flaws in it.
The Great Gatsby is an amazing movie. And amazing not in the sense that now it is customary to understand this word (oh cool! yes, it is cool!, etc.), but in its true meaning - he shakes, he hurts, he makes think. I don’t know about you, but for me these aspects are one of the most important when watching a movie.
First of all I want to say about Leonardo DiCaprio. It exceeded all my expectations (and, believe me, it was just huge). It's that rare case where you don't see an actor on the screen, you only see his character. It's not DiCaprio, it's Jay Gatsby. It is a pleasure to watch it.
Gatsby is a man who knows how to wait and believe. A man who looks at a green light every day and imagines how happy he will be. A man who so pursued greatness, wealth, and in fact - love and happiness.
Daisy's ambiguous character. She is tossed in her feelings and thoughts, and Cary Mulligan has perfectly shown her condition.
No less delights the narrator of an amazing story - Nick Carraway (in the skillful performance of Toby Maguire).
Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Lisa Adam perfectly complement the cast, which is really impressive. Sometimes after the film, you can think, “But this role would be better played by such and such an actor.” You can’t do that – everything is in its place.
Separately, I want to highlight costumes, music and camera work. People who did this can be applauded standing up! And you can talk about it endlessly, but I think everyone who has seen this film will completely agree.
“Thank you, Baz Luhrman!” Thank you to everyone who made it!
And I hope that there will be a lot of people who will reflect on their lives, on the theme of love and the values of our world.

So my story came to a great ending. The final I've been waiting for almost 2 years.
This story, strangely enough, began in the cinema. In the late fall of 2011, I invited a friend to the film Midnight in Paris, hoping to admire the beautiful capital of France and enjoy its secrets. But in fact, everything turned out to be much more interesting and more unpredictable: the film introduced me to the 20s of the twentieth century, the so-called “jazz age”, and with its fantastic inhabitants: Hemingway, Picasso ... and Fitzgerald. We have to pay tribute to Woody Allen - the Oscar, which he received six months later - he deserved like no other!
The next day I came to work, and I was surprised at the most amazing coincidence — in front of me was a book by F. S. Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby. The night is gentle.
Two or three minutes later, I was reading a novel. In my fantasies, New York of that time towered, its suburbs and it was mysterious and mysterious. Gatsby!
The novel made a huge impression on me, and its author became a favorite foreign writer.
After reading, I learned about a large number of adaptations of this novel, and about the main thing: Gatsby will appear again in front of the audience, and it will be DiCaprio!
I started counting days, weeks, months... and waited!
Looking ahead, I will say that the film was great!
It has everything: a great script, a great star cast, not a small budget, and of course, a strong director.
I'll start with Leo. I admire him terribly. Every time I watch a new movie with him and I think it’s apogee, and after a year or two I realize that this “scary-free” actor has no boundaries, he’s getting better and better. Here he played a very interesting and mysterious man, and did it perfectly. His character, I'm more than sure, sympathizes with millions - a romantic and dreamer who is ready to do everything to fulfill his only dream: to be with the girl he fell in love with 5 years ago. Of course, after reading the book, watching the movie, it becomes unclear what he found in this girl? Honestly, except for the fact that it's just a boy's love, nothing else comes to mind. Alas, his hero was initially doomed. You can't go back to the past. You just have to look ahead.
As for Nick, played quite ambiguously by Tobey Maguire, I introduced him to others. Toby is clearly overplaying, which makes his hero fake.
But Carey Mulligan played perfectly, her heroine is a carefree girl who is torn between the past and the present, and maybe she wants to return to Gatsby, but understands that the present will not let her go.
It should be noted that Tom and Myrtle also looked great on the screen.
The book is gorgeous. It's a great movie.

Watch and read to everyone!
P.S. And I would advise the academicians another (probably they have already read and watched) - give the Oscar to the best actor of our time, Leo deserved it!
Gatsby believed in the green light, the light of an incredible future of happiness, which is pushed back every year. (C)
A year ago I read Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby, because already then there was a rumor about the film adaptation. To say that the finale shook, to say nothing. The surprising and perhaps all-too-American finale forced him to reconsider his views on literature and 20th-century America in general. Post-war hysteria is replaced by the great era of jazz, material values take precedence over universal moral norms, and organized crime, which grows every day, gives everyone living in that country a special right to act for the sake of survival. All this creates a special caste of people, Gatsby people, those who are in principle highly moral, but under the influence of the surrounding reality are forced to behave in this way and in no other way. Around teeming with other people - the Buchanans, they were destined by birth their life, wealth, brilliance and complete poverty in terms of spirituality, consumer people. These are the characters that Fitzgerald confronts.
Do you want to talk and talk about the film adaptation of the novel by Baz Luhrmann or better listen to Armstrong and everything will become clear?
Leonardo DiCaprio played, but his name is already said! The actor played the ve-li-ko-lep-no!!! this is exactly what Gatsby should be, with such clear blue eyes, with such immeasurable energy, with such inner dignity, but so defenseless in the face of his dreams, and the fact that his dream assumed the image of a dissolute and insignificant woman is already his personal disaster. Gatsby as a hero, as a man, and his unconquered ambitions were broken. Who or what managed to do this, it is impossible to say. Maybe he broke himself internally, and all the subsequent events finished him off physically? On an internal level, he realized how wrong he was when he brought Daisy into his house, flaunting his income, Jay Gatsby realizes that the most important things in life are not things. It's a pity no one around, except Nick Carraway, understands that. Thus, the life of an outstanding person collapses, and life is already a lot.
The film is chic, completely immersed in the atmosphere of the 20s of the 20th century, with all the contrast of America, from the richest areas to areas of extreme poverty. Modern music does not spoil the picture, on the contrary, gives it a special flavor! To watch everyone, and not only because of the beautifully designed picture, but for comparison with modern reality?
20 out of 10
I didn’t read the book, but I learned about it later than this movie. Baz Luhrmann never liked his films: he pays too much attention to the glossy picture. Therefore, the “Great Gatsby” did not expect anything good at all, but it turned out not so bad.
The Great Gatsby is an extravaganza film, a holiday film. Bright costumes, beautiful scenery, confetti, fireworks, noisy parties - all this looks amazing. Visually, everything is just perfect. But the story itself just pales in the background.
I didn’t get interested in this incongruous love line. For the whole film, I just wanted to know the answer to the question, "Who is Mr. Gatsby?" It's a very vivid image. Jay Gatsby attracted his mystery and bewitched his dreams and faith in the green light.
What a great DiCaprio! His roles as serious uncles are already pretty tired, and the last two roles have brought at least some variety. Leo completely pulled the blanket over himself. You just don’t notice other actors. Mulligan and Maguire generally look like an addition to the scenery is nothing more. Edgerton alone miraculously stands out. The only thing that confused me, I saw the whole film in DiCaprio, Jack Dawson, Howard Hughes, the whole film could not get rid of this idea.
The film came out very spectacular, beautiful, fascinating. Watching it is not boring, but it quickly wears out of your head and in memory except for the picture and DiCaprio nothing remains.
