Snow captivity The film “White Snow” is the work of Turkish director Selim Gunesh, which was based on the story of writer Sabahattin Ali “Ayran”. The film was presented at many film festivals and was awarded, for example, in Ankara and Moscow.
The film takes place in a small Turkish village in the mountains, where cold, snow and loneliness reign. One day, a boy named Hassan sells his ayran to feed his mother and young brothers after his father is taken to prison. He is now the main man in the family. The film begins with a dance scene where we see a happy family, but suddenly the idyll is interrupted – they come for their father. The family begins a completely different life, full of despair and hope. His mother gets a job as a nurse to an elderly woman, and Hasan begins selling ayran, and every day he travels a long way through the snowy forest to the bus stop to sell a drink to rare passengers. The boy realizes that without this, his family will find it difficult, and he courageously waits by the road, without thinking about the cold and the long way he has traveled from his village to this village. And everyone understands that in this boy lives a real man with a bigger heart, "a bigger man than anyone here." Hassan loves his family and understands that it is his duty to help her, and despite the frost, he is courageously trying to make money. It's snowing around, calm and lonely. It seems that nothing bothers anyone, and the villagers live in their own small world, in which there is loneliness, and they are used to it. And it seems that even Hassan's father is already used to his imprisonment. But in fact, people still have hope for the best in their hearts, memories and pain for the unfulfilled.
The film “White Snow” is very symbolic, it has a lot of moments that you do not pay attention to at first, and then, towards the end of the film, you realize that there was a certain message hidden in them. For example, a boy on the way to a bus stop drops his magazine in the river and is very upset. For him, this is not just a magazine, for him it is the only thing that still characterizes him as a teenager, and not a grown and brave man. It also connects him to a completely different world, to a different civilization that is not in his mountain village. After all, the village is completely different entertainment for children. Hassan drops his magazine into the river because he hears wolves howling.
If we talk about the idea of the film, the main idea of the film “White Snow” is the process of initiation, which is subjected to this boy, that is, his transition to a new state of an older man. But for this he is subjected to many different tests. He tries to confront a cruel reality that is full of suffering, shattered dreams, longing, but at the same time unquenchable hope. The boy realizes that while his father is in prison, he is responsible for his younger brothers. The director shows all the power of man in a small creature that, unfortunately, has no power over the machinations of fate.
Selim Gunesh does not provide huge texts to his characters in the film, there are few words in the film, but this is because the main thing here is the feelings of the characters, and the viewer must feel them with his heart. The words are replaced by music, which reflects all the feelings of the characters and all the events in the film. Also, the film shows very beautiful snow-capped views of the area, which fascinate with their beauty. The main and integral part of the film is snow. He's everywhere. It covers houses, streets, roads, mountains and souls of people. Not everyone is destined to free themselves from their shackles.
It seems to me that the director managed to convey all the feelings that he wanted to convey to the viewer through the screen. After watching the film, a person understands what is most important in a person and who is a real person. The film “White Snow” should be watched carefully and noted for yourself moments that help you better understand it. For example, dripping paint with a paintbrush makes you feel tension. The film is impressive and makes you think.
