The short tape “Tunesetter” is incredibly convenient to live in the timekeeping that it occupies. The fact is that if Olivier Trenair’s film were a full-length film, it would be boring for the viewer to watch its first two acts, and not consistent with the fact that the main conflict unfolds in the third, final act. It could give you all the background. Or build a montage of ala “Pulp Fiction” and completely remake the film in a new way, in order to make it more dynamic and launch the story from the most interesting, interrupted by memories of the past.
However, there is neither the first nor the second, and the short film “Tune in” exists in the form in which it exists: it is a small and at the same time memorable story about a man who is mired in deception to the extent that he does not see the beacon of truth guiding him, who could banish the darkness around him. Instead, he hears it - it's piano music. And while it is, the main character of the tape Adrian (Greguar Leprence-Renge) is not lost completely.
The whole film is based on the fact that the hero chose a dishonest, but convenient path for himself. He walks through it, caring little about who and what surrounds him and what he thinks about it. He is ambiguous due to his obvious selfishness, but the viewer understands him and accepts him as he is. Why? The very beginning of the film is a clear parallel with the everyday life failures that haunt everyone and what they escalated on the basis of: a loss in a contest in which victory was the idea of a fix of a lifetime. It makes you feel like a hero. Empathy over his loss forms an extra booster for all of Andrian's dishonest manipulations. And he uses it up to the moment when his deception is not revealed, and he does not find himself in a situation in which he was led by selfishness and the desire for more due to the complex of unrealized desires that were already taken for granted in his ideas about his future.
The denouement, within the framework of which the delicate situation for the life and condition of the main character is concluded, manifests itself so unexpectedly and so competently that until the last one waits for hints about what its finale will be. However, she breaks off on the piano half-sound, cutting off the catharsis and leaving with the question: “What would I do?”
The tape catches, and it clings to all its contents. A hero, an unusual story with a difficult ending, a complex life situation, intersecting sound and visual editing, using metaphors on both levels. “Tune tuner” is a short and full story, which, in my personal opinion, lacks only one, sharp and loud, as if from a flat string, sound at the end, even after the credits. But this is my view of the end of the story. The other person has the right to be different.
And so it is called that we don’t own it, we don’t own it.
A short film that leaves strong impressions and excites. How easy it has been for us in the last couple of decades to treat murder in movies. Shootings, torture, mortuaries – so much has been revised, it is already difficult to surprise moviegoers with anything. But if you put the viewer, well, not in the place of the heroes of these scenes, but nearby, very, very close, then how will his pulse change? Self-preservation instinct, adrenaline, trap feeling, horror somewhere at the roots of the hair on the back of the head, goosebumps. To convey this, to make so empathize, you need to be able to see and film it.
And here it is interesting to think how we ourselves, and not the hero of the picture, use the gifts of nature, which we do not even appreciate, having met with disappointments in life? “I have no gift,” someone might say. But a healthy body and mind are already a gift, just like life itself, we did not choose it all, we did not deserve it for something specific. Born, alive. The hero of the picture fate punished for cunning? But how often do people lie, if not in this way, to their loved ones or colleagues? How often do people try to break down walls for years instead of finding a door and break down after a natural failure? It's easy to talk about someone out there. But the message is sent to the viewer, to each person. It may be unpleasant or unwelcome to think about, but the way we use gifts is a personal choice, just like the “answers of fate” to this very choice.
Musician before the fingertips, before the last note.
According to observations, from each competent and high-quality short film you can make a full meter, this is an indicator of skill. It immediately seemed that the Adjuster could result in something similar to such a chic film as “The Lucky Number of Slevin”, “Big jackpot” or more dramatic and serious, like “The Pianist”.
The actors perfectly played every half-look, impeccable intonation, live dialogue, honed gestures and manners. We have the days torn from their lives, not the walking patterns of buffoons, villains and crooks. French cinema is attractive and charming with non-trivial plots and twists.
The main character here is undoubtedly music. It breaks professional musicians, or elevates them to unprecedented heights of celebration, and sometimes can literally save lives. “I’m not going to die while I’m playing.” Partly recalled the last shots of the Titanic, when the musicians remained on board and played, played, played.
Separately, it is worth noting the choice of musical accompaniment, the leitmotif passed through many mise-en-scene.
Telling such an amazing story in a short time is expensive! All good, especially the director, he is also a part-writer. I would love to see his new work.
Just because a film is short doesn’t mean it’s worse than a feature film. This film clearly shows us that. If in a full meter very often use unnecessary offshoots of the plot, superfluous actors, empty dialogue, timekeeping for two or three hours ... Here we see: pure concentrated action, beating right into the heart - in just 14 minutes!
The most obvious thought after viewing is that all the secret is ever revealed. Deception can only temporarily bring some dividends, but then everything collapses like a house of cards.
If you look metaphorically, "she can't kill me while I'm playing" - just playing, he lives for real. He lives by music, that's the meaning of his life!
Pretending to be blind, he began to take advantage of his position, benefiting not only materially but also emotionally. He is no longer tormented by conscience, he does not care about moral norms and ethics, but this will somehow lead to the destruction of the individual.
The music in the film is incomparable! It is very pleasant to listen to, perfectly conveys the mood of a scene and the film as a whole.
This is a film where you will watch the credits with special interest!

I didn’t know what to expect from this short film. Before that, I watched the dramatic-pre-ramatic, so, apparently, subconsciously waited for something in this spirit, since both things are recommendations of the same person. In fact, it was almost a psychological thriller.
Starting from the second half of the picture, everything in the stomach shrank from tension. This often and on full-length thrillers can not wait, and here a full sense of presence and empathy. Bravo!
I do not even know who can see what, because there are many thoughts after watching, and everything can be developed and developed and written not one but ten reviews. Trust me, there's enough. But what is most important to me as a lesson is that you don’t need to use some untouchable things (in this case, the status of the blind who would give a lot to become sighted again) for the sake of benefit and convenience, because life is a boomerang, and sooner or later everything will come back and hit you with a ricochet. And it will be juicy and long to wait for the moment, but in the end it will ricochet. I have no doubt about that.
I don’t even want to preach morality to anyone, everyone has their own truth. But I have long understood and every day I am convinced that it is better to live according to conscience, you do not need to be a saint, it is too heavy a burden, but it is better not to violate some fundamental boundaries, because fate will take revenge. And as this picture shows, this very fate has a very “subtle sense of black humor.”
Respect for music! It was a pleasure to listen to the ending and credits.
I've always loved French cinema. It has something atmospheric, charming, incomparable and very catching my soul. But the Adjuster... is just a masterpiece. How can you hold so many emotions in 13 and a half minutes?
This story is striking in its improbability and routine at the same time. Everyone has psychologically challenging periods, and everyone handles it in their own way. Adrian, for example, pretends to be a blind piano tuner. A non-trivial method of psychotherapy. People think that losing something makes us more sensitive, so they open up and trust their secrets. And just such emotions are needed by Adrian to survive his failure and start playing again.
But once the deception takes him to the darkest corners of someone else’s soul – a place where no one would want to be. “Say something, say something, damn it!” – turns in Adrian’s head, but he silently begins to play. It's one of the most tragic and beautiful scenes I've ever seen. And to Schumann's tune. I watched the credits until the black screen changed them, and I wanted Adrian to be able to play endlessly.
Bravo, Olivier Trainer!
Bravo, Gregoire Leprence-Renge!

P.S. Never watch this movie duplicated. Don't let him lose his French charm.
I won’t die while I’m playing someone else’s piano.
The French can make movies with charm and love. Even in this short film, not too optimistic, with a plot suitable for an adventurous thriller, the main criterion for which you can raise the score at times is added: music. Music made the dark story beautiful and tragic, music played a major role.
Adjuster is a touching sketch about a piano tuner pretending to be blind for his own benefit. The film tells his personal story, as well as describes the case that determined the final fate of the protagonist. This is not to convey in words, you need to see it once to admire, perhaps even cry.
I enjoyed the pure French language, not flavored with any dubbing. It is replaced by Russian subtitles, good, with a large font. In general, watching this short film is not only interesting, but also comfortable.
Therefore, a well-deserved
“People think that losing something makes us more sensitive. ?
13 minutes. Briefness is the sister of talent. Excellent.
He really lost something. He was unable to speak in public and show his skills. He had no choice but to work as a piano tuner. And he started pretending to be blind. It brought more tips, people sympathized with him and treated him more condescendingly. But one day it all stopped.
When we see someone who has problems, we start to think about our own. They are beginning to seem not so big to us. We want to help this person, we think he is unhappy.
The film is so small but leaves a strong impression. That's what short films are good at. The director did his best. Hard.
All genius is simple. The short footage only proves this theorem. As part of the French spring, freshly shot short tapes were shown all night in a local cinema. I assure you, there was something to see. “Tune tuner” attracts attention not only by the unusual theme and the quality of the actors’ play, but also by the musical accompaniment.
Adrian is a young pianist who dreamed of winning the Bernstein Competition. Unfortunately, it failed. The feeling of shame that engulfed him never goes away. The guy no longer believes in his talent, he abandons dreams and becomes a piano tuner.
But Adrian is an unusual tuner - he is blind. Weeks of training, special lenses, a cane - and he's blind. Why would a healthy person pretend to be blind? It is said that when a person is deprived of something, he has other feelings, he becomes more sensitive. Easily credible, Adrian has no shortage of customers - everyone wants a blind customiser.
Children trustingly open doors in front of him, women change clothes (for no one ever thinks that he is sighted), men gently support the hand.
However, all the secret becomes clear.
One day he received a call from an elderly couple. The adjuster persistently rang the doorbell. The woman's husband wasn't at home and she didn't want to open it for a long time. When the guy got inside the apartment, something went wrong: pretending you didn't see became harder.
This tape is impressive, touching, perhaps shocking. It is deep, interesting and atmospheric. The actors played great - I take my hat off.
