Born on May 24, 1896 in Pavlograd, Soviet director, actor, teacher, People's Artist of the USSR (1967), doctor of art history (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1943. In 1913 he entered the Student Studio, headed by E. B. Vakhtangov (since 1926 - the Yevgeny Vakhtangov Theatre). A great creative achievement of the director was the production of the play “Egor Bulychev and others” (1932). Among the significant directorial works of Z.: Barsuki Leonov (1927), Aristocrats Pogodin (1935), Inspector of Gogol (1939), The Great Sovereign (1945), The Young Guard of Fadeev (1947), The First Joys of Fedin (1950), Hamlet (1958). Author of books and articles on the theory of acting and directing art, theater pedagogy. Since 1917 he has been engaged in pedagogical activity, since 1925 he has been directing the school at the Vakhtangov Theatre (since 1933 - the Shchukin Theatre School); since 1939 he has been a professor, head of the department of directing at GITIS (1944-49). State Prize of the USSR (1952).
Awarded 3 orders, as well as medals.
He passed away in 1976.
