The history of the group dates back to 1991, when Bracewaite and Aitchison met. Four years later, together with Bullock, the musicians formed the group "Mogwai", which in Chinese means "evil spirit" or "demon". The band's debut single, "Tuner/Lower", was released in February 1996. They are later joined by Cumming and "Teenage Fanclub" drummer Brendon O'Hare, who together with other musicians take part in the recording of the debut album.
Mogwai Young Team was released in October 1997 and ranked 75th on the UK album chart. The following year, the band released the first single with cover versions of the songs "Magoo" and
. It ranks 60th on the national chart. In the same year, an album of remixes was released, performed by various artists, including Alec Empire, Max Tundra and My Bloody Valentine. The album was originally released on Eye-Q and in 2001 Chemikal Underground was reissued.
Before the release of his second album, Come On Die Young, O'Hare left the band. The album is more successful and reaches the 29th position in the UK. His most recent album was 2001’s Rock Action. His place in the national chart is 23. In 2006, Mogwai recorded the soundtracks for Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait. "Fountain" (The Fountain), and in 2010 the premiere of the film “Burning” with musical accompaniment from “Mogwai” takes place.
