The short is a brief account of Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis and his discovery of the need for cleanliness in 19th-century maternity wards, thereby significantly decreasing maternal mortality, and of his struggle to gain acceptance of his idea. Although Semmelweis ultimately failed in his lifetime, later scientific luminaries advanced his work in spirit like microbiologist Louis Pasteur, who provided a scientific theoretical explanation of Semmelweis' observations by helping develop the germ theory of disease and the British surgeon, Dr. Joseph Lister who revolutionized medicine putting Pasteur's research to practical use. And Robespierre threatens his prime minister, Chavelien, that instead of the rebel's head, the guillotine will test Chavelien's neck. The trouble is that Sir Percy gave his word to his wife, who found herself in the position that, for at least a year, he would not set foot on the soil of France so as not to worry his beloved. How do you get it in England? Saving his head, Chavellin comes up with a cunning plan: with the help of a famous actress, he sets a trap and kidnaps the wife of Sir Percy, a French aristocrat who escaped the guillotine, freed by Sir Percy and who married her. close
