In August 1963, just a couple of months before his death, Jean Cocteau made one last short film. The film comprises one still and highly sober shot of Cocteau facing the camera head-on to address the youth of the future. Once recorded, this spoken message for the 21st century was sealed and stored with the understanding that it would be opened only in the year 2000. As it turned out, it was discovered and exhumed a few years shy of that date. Where in The Testament of Orpheus Cocteau portrays himself as a living anachronism, a lonesome classical modernist loitering in space-time while lost in the spectral light of his memories, here he acknowledges explicitly the irony of his phantom-like state. By the time the viewer sees this image, he, J. C., our saviour Poet, will long be dead. close

The director tells the story of Boris Grebenshchikov through the image of Leo Tolstoy. According to Viktor Tikhomirov, both heroes are similar "in their delusions and achievements". The film has a lot of chronicles and, of course, Grebenshchikov's songs sound, and George Gunitsky described the tape after its premiere at Pushkinskaya 10: "A completely untethered and insanely surreal film in a good way. And it is gratifying that all this postmodern film improvisation is involved on a cool aquarium basis. We need to look at the picture again once or twice, get a better understanding of it. And savor it. A very worthy work." close

The turning point for Russia is 1991. Exiled from the country, writer, dissident and human rights activist Georgiy Vladimov found himself in a forced, joyless emigration in Niedernhausen. Later, Vladimov will begin writing a novel in three parts, "Long Way to Tipperary," which, according to the plan, would cover the period from August 1946 to August 1991. But he will have time to write only the first part, where he will again and again return to the almost unconscious childish act of one day in August 1946. On that blurry day in memory, cadet-Suvorov student Zhora Vladimov went to support the disgraced writer Mikhail Zoshchenko. close

A documentary about one of the most controversial projects of the United States of the last decade. Officially, the "Safe Fence Act" was passed under President George W. Bush in 2006. Then along the Mexican border, it was planned to build fences with a length of about 1100 km (the border with Mexico - 3145 km). Three billion dollars and three years later the director examines the effectiveness of this project, trying to find out how it corresponds to the stated goals: the fight against illegal migration, drug trafficking and terrorism. It was worth it or not, frankly tell border guards, ranchers, environmentalists and opponents of the migration dispute. close

The hero of the film, the famous director, screenwriter, playwright Vasily Sigarev, tells stories from his life, which, when slightly transformed, become the stories of his plays. For the residents of his native Verkhnyaya Salda it's everyday. For the capital's theaters - an unprecedented reality of provincial life. For the audience - and laughter and horror. For the playwright - numerous prizes and endless pain. close

Sergey Dvortsevoy makes his international debut with this astonishingly intimate portrait of a nomadic family on the Kazakh plains. Several scenes in this slow, elegant film betray a certain dry humor -- a child devouring the last of a bowl of yogurt and then crying; a cow getting its head stuck in a pail; and a woman singing to herself, accompanied by her snoring husband. Other scenes capture the nomads' hardscrabble lives -- drunken herdsmen in the grips of existential despair, growling dogs, and a camel enduring a rather grim septum piercing. By the end of the film, the family pulls up stakes and herds its sundry four-legged beasts -- camels, cattle, goats, dogs, and horses -- to a more fertile plain. This film was screened at the 1999 Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. close

The film is based on an interview in New York in 1993 between critic Solomon Volkov and poet Joseph Brodsky. Behind the scenes, the poet answers the questions of the journalist. The conversation, in the end, covers almost the entire life of Brodsky. We are faced with the dramatic story of a man who categorically refuses to dramatize it. The story of a poet who gained in full, but lost immeasurably more. close

On June 21, Victor Tsoi would have turned 50 years old. But in the memory and hearts of his fans, he will forever remain a 28-year-old idol. Victor Tsoi lived in an era of change, when one reality was replaced by another. He was one of the creators of the new world. His life is a set of paradoxes. A half-blooded boy who grew up in Leningrad, a rocker whose name rattled all over the Union, a musician who became a hero of the era - he sang, and millions sang along with him. When the news reported about a car accident near Riga on August 15, 1990, many were surprised to learn that Viktor Tsoi was only 28 years old! And he managed to live such a big life in such a small period of time. “Tsoi is a figure like an angel,” said Boris Grebenshchikov. Perhaps that’s why his fans say “Tsoi is alive” because angels don’t die. Viewers will see unique archival video materials, which capture rehearsals, concerts, tours and interviews of Viktor Tsoi to various TV channels. We will visit the places where the talent of the musician was born, talk with his colleagues, friends and like-minded people. close
