"Camera, motor!" - "The director commands: shooting of the erotic scene begins." Its participants barely know each other, but the director demands full dedication: sex “tough, but with love.” It turns out not sex, a disaster — actors like wooden, movements clumsy. Will something help on-screen lovers to become natural and “make love” on an excellent basis? close

In the men's boudoir, in other words, in the smoking room of a fancy gambling house, four men drank and smoked cigars. They were neither young, nor old, nor beautiful, nor ugly; but they all had one difference, which gave them veterans of love battles, that almost indescribable expression of cold and mocking sadness, which clearly says: “We have lived long enough for our pleasure and are now looking for something that we can love and honor.”
One of them turned the conversation on women. It would be wiser not to talk about them at all; but many intelligent people over a glass of wine are not averse to banal themes. Then the narrator is usually listened to as they would listen to music coming from the ballroom. close

He hears the 'click'. Lowers his head. Damn. He is standing on a mine. If he moves, it will explode. How will he get through this ? He doesn't have much time left... He hesitates. Waits. He's exhausted. It's time for the last call. He dials a number into his mobile phone, hoping to hear a little voice. That voice, at this precise moment in time, seems to be the most precious thing. His daughter. One last time. One last wish. No response. The repetition of the dial tone. When suddenly... A hostile voice answers him. His ultimate battle begins. close

A musical short film about the extermination of Roma by the Nazis during World War II. One of the first directorial works of Tony Gatlif and the first in which he addresses directly to gypsy themes. In fact, all those elements from which Gatlif will build his famous films in the future are already presented here: ethnographic documentary, fantastic musical “pressure”, attention to the dark pages of history (the Roma will be remembered in Swing as well), the fate and inner strength of a person; a fierce speech against social injustice.
Perhaps that is why the plot of the tape is extremely simple, even schematic. Roma are sitting in a concentration camp, behind barbed wire and trying to use flamenco – “song and dance” – to express their protest, to ignite themselves to fight. These expressive musical numbers, performed in the French-Spanish "narrhechia", however, are wordless. The first number is actually a protest. The second is the laconic statement “I am a gypsy.” The third song is based on the phrase “Run the gypsies, live the gypsies”. Thus, the nomadic image of gypsy life acquires the maximum weight from Gatlif, as the only possible form of existence, and “flight” becomes a life victory. Although, of course, it can be viewed melancholy as a defeat, a lack of strength to fight.
I don’t think the German overseers need translation either. These are monosyllabic orders. Their execution is clearly illustrated by the director. In addition, they are on the "heard" of anyone who has seen at least one picture of the horrors of World War II. close

The film studio "Albatros" was founded in 1920 by Russian emigre filmmakers who had left Russia after the 1917 revolution. From 1920 to 1929 the studio "Albatros" and Russian filmmakers will literally upset the French cinema by bringing a specificity of their own. The phenomenal success of the films of the studio "Albatros" will give a second life to the French cinema then in crisis by propelling it to the first world ranking in competition with Hollywood. At the head of this small studio born one evening in February 1920 in Montreuil were two Russian producers: Joseph Ermolaev and Alexandr Kamenka. close
