Jorge de Sena was forced to leave his country. First he moved to Brazil, and later to the USA. He never returned to Portugal. During his 20-year-long exile, he kept an epistolary correspondence with Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. These letters are a testimony of the profound friendship between the two poets, letters of longing and of desire to “fill years of distance with hours of conversation”. Through excerpts and verses, a dialog is established, revealing their divergent opinions but mostly their strong bond, and their efforts to preserve it until their last breaths. close

Georgios Visenos was born in Eastern Thrace in 1849 and died in an asylum for the insane in Athens in 1896. He was the author of popular, mostly autobiographical novels, including The Only Trip in His Life, many of which are recognized as classics of Greek literature. From this starting point, director Lakis Papastatis unfolds scenes from recent Greek history.
The film begins with the placement of Viesenos in a psychiatric hospital, which was the result of his passionate, obsessive attraction to a twelve-year-old girl named Bettina. Reality and fiction are mixed in the writer’s imagination, and Papastakis skillfully weaves scenes of various periods of Viesenos’ life into a description of his stay in a madhouse. The patient, reciting aloud his recently published autobiographical novel, struggles to remember the childhood he spent in Constantinople and Thrace.
In the center of his memories is his grandfather, who lived the first ten years of his life, hiding behind the guise of a little girl. His family was forced to hide the sex of their child in order to save him from service in the Turkish army: during the Turkish rule, unmarried Christian boys under the age of ten were forcibly taken from their parents to raise them from the evil Janissaries - soldiers of the Turkish army.
In the soul of Wiesenos forever remained the memory of the difficult fate of his grandfather, who lived all his life in fairy tales and dreams, derived from long communication with his grandmother. The complex interweaving of hopes, fear, mystery and hallucinations gives Papastakis’ work a unique poetic aura. Filled with elegant images, the film flips through stories of love, longing, aspiration and unfulfilled dreams. The Only Journey of His Life is an inventive poetic work that enlivens an important era of Greek history and the fragile beauty of artistic talent on the brink of personal tragedy. close

Even though today he remains a great stranger, Jani Christou (1926-1970) stands among the greatest figures of the 20th century music avant-garde. His work is characterized by a rare uniformity and consistency, regarding not only the pioneering means which he introduced in the world of sounds and the innovatory music systems, but also his own philosophical universe which runs through and inspires his compositions: the myth, the transcendent, the mysticism, the primordial, the ritual, the unapproachable, the panic, the hysteria... With Christou's early death in a tragic accident, on his birthday, in January 8th 1970, the world of contemporary music lost one of the most thrilling and provocative talents. The documentary attempts to illustrate the personality and the spirit of this great thinker of art and follow the path of his short life, which has always been interwoven with art and his meaning of offering to humanity and civilization. close
