Malcolm Taylor. Malcolm McDowell, née Malcolm Taylor, was born on 13 June 1943 in Leeds, England. In his youth, he worked in the pub that his father kept, then as a salesman, selling coffee in Yorkshire. Around the same time, McDowell became interested in theater, starting acting courses, where a friend brought him, then playing on the provincial stage. In 1962 or 63, McDowell made his big-stage debut in Henry V, making a small splash. Since 1964, for a year and a half he played with the Royal Shakespeare Company. McDowell began working on British television in 1965. In 1967, director Lindsay Anderson, who later became McDowell’s best friend, noticed the young actor and in 1968 shot him in the film If..., which made the actor a national star. They later worked together in the films Oh Lucky Man (1973) and Hospital Britain (1982). After working in If... McDowell in 1971 starred in Stanley Kubrick (with whom he became very friends during filming) in the film Clockwork Orange. The role in this film brought McDowell international recognition and a nomination for the Golden Globe. In 1980, McDowell played one of his most famous roles in Tinto Brass’ controversial film Caligula. It seemed that nothing prevented the further development of his “star” career, but unhealthy lifestyle, drugs and women, aged the actor, overnight turning him from a temperamental, dark-haired young man into a gray old man. The 80s for McDowell were filled with many minor roles in mediocre films, but in the 90s he suddenly returned to the “big” cinema: playing the role of Admiral Tolvin in the multimedia “Wing Commander III” (1993), starred in the film “Star Trek: Generations” (1994) and “Tank Girl” (1995). The actor also works intensively on American television. During his 30 years in film, Malcolm McDowell starred in more than 70 films. Among the actor’s hobbies are collecting toy trucks, visiting antique salons and auctions, driving a car. Since 1993, McDowell has been married to Kelly Ker.
