This is the first independent work of Kaufman and Kopalin, students of Dziga Vertov, an experimenter and a desperate formalist, says Andrei Shemyakin. Kaufman and Kopalin, inspired by the texture and nature of Moscow, show the life of the city, not yet touched by the grandiose reconstruction. They are watching the city, trying to capture its atmosphere, already guessing that the Moscow they are filming will no longer be there. For example, they remove the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, not assuming that in 5 years this Temple will be blown up. The uniqueness of this film lies in the fact that we can see the chronicles of good old Moscow, on which Muscovites like to sigh today. close

"Heroic Deed Among the Ice" ("Podvig vo I'dah" in Russian) is a 1928 Soviet silent documentary film. It is also known as "Exploit on the Ice" and "Ice-Breaker Kras(s)in". This film is the first collaboration between Georgi Vasilyev and Sergei Vasilyev. It details the mission of the ice-breaker Krasin to rescue the crashed crew of Umberto Nobile's arctic airship Italia. The raw material shot without any plan by cameramen who accompanied Krasin was used by Georgi and Sergei Vasilyev to create a coherent and powerful narrative in the tradition of Soviet montage school. Heroic Deed was released in October 1928 and its success helped Georgi and Sergei Vasilyev to realize their ambition to direct. All the editing notes by Vasilyev survive and have been published, but the film itself is partially lost. The actual ice-breaker Krasin survived and is now a (still fully operational) museum ship St Petersburg. close

Shots of the awakening of the city, renewal of its life, echo with lyrical pictures of the revival of nature. Kaufman's attentive camera stops for a long time on the smiling faces of the children, painting a lyrical picture of a confession of love for Kyiv. close

Made during the rapid industrialisation and collectivisation of Stalin’s Five-Year Plan. Kaufman countered the poverty of the villages with the geometrical rhythm of mechanised factories; militarisation is shown as the next step of the ‘unprecedented campaign’. "The proletariat, having become master of one sixth of the globe, frees the rural working people from the kulak oppression…THE PROLETARIAT…engages the peasantry in a joint campaign for Socialism. This is what the film speaks about". close
