The piece presents a series of bizarre tableaux, many involving cinematic voyeurism, blurring of the living-dead borderline and a healthy amount of stabbing, of oneself and of others. A catatonic fellow gets costumed as a ghoul; a literal tree-hugger, ecstatic in his arboreal embrace, gets stabbed; a bespectacled fellow with a Bolex-y camera goes around documenting it all. I know these were glasnost days, but still, I'm a little surprised filmmakers were out there doing stuff like this. There's nothing overtly anti-communist in this piece, but it ain't what you'd call respectful, 'neither. The brothers Aleinikov lay turgid governmental speeches about "the rearing of a new man" under footage of dudes goofing around in space-alien costumes, they roll footage of apple-cheeked future Stakhanovites upside down and backwards, they crudely animate -- in a certain South Parkian way -- CCCP icons in a goofy manner. Good, clean fun. (written by Colin Marshall) close

“The trouble happened at six o’clock in the evening, but at first no one realized what had happened. The alien ship in the rays of the evening sun seemed to be a cloud, devoid of clear forms, iridescent and completely safe. At that time in the house were Marya Stepanovna, her daughter Leokadia and granddaughter Sashenka, who was sick with angina and capricious. Semensky, Leokadia's husband, has not yet returned from work. Eyewitnesses said that the cloud, hanging for a few minutes over the house of the Semenskys, suddenly fell on him, enveloped the house like a fog, then rose again, gaining speed, until it mixed with other clouds and clouds. The house is gone. The front garden, overgrown with weeds, a booth with Trenoga and outbuildings also disappeared. There was a deserted place where no blade of grass grew, as well as a square pit from the foundation. close
