In the 60s, together with Leonid Gubanov, Vladimir Aleynikov, Yuri Kublanovsky and Sasha Sokolov, he was a member of the literary group SMOG (The Youngest Society of Geniuses). He is currently the Executive Secretary of the Board of the International Foundation for Slavic Literature and Culture. Author of many articles on the history of Russian culture of the XVIII - XIX centuries and the history of domestic land use. For the novel “Alien letters” was awarded the Booker Prize in 1998.
