Director Ivan Davydov’s satirical animated mini-collection “Laughter and Sin” is a hilarious 8-minute illustration of three old Russian proverbs adapted to the Soviet everyday realities of the late 1970s. The recognizable hand-drawn animation of Alexei Bukin and Elvira Maslova, who worked together on “Three of Prostokvashino”, makes the short cartoon lively and understandable to any viewer.
Episode 1: "Language will bring to Kiev"
What happens if a tourist in Leningrad asks a passer-by how to go, for example, to Nevsky? It would seem that the question is simple, but none of the people met can give a clear answer. Everyone is so indifferent to the fate of the traveler that as a result of all his wanderings, he is not on the coveted Nevsky, but on Khreshchatyk – the main street of the Ukrainian capital, located a thousand kilometers from Leningrad. But how else to understand the proverb “Language will bring to Kiev”?
Episode 2: "The Master's business is afraid"
The TV studio has a master who has never held complex electronic devices in his hands. He repairs them with a rough carpenter tool, does not observe elementary safety precautions. Is it any wonder that everything he touches finally fails? His carelessness goes beyond all conceivable limits, which is why soulless TVs and radios begin to experience a real fear. No wonder they say: the work of the master is afraid. This fragment ridicules the quality of household service in the appliance repair shop, which at the time left much to be desired.
Episode 3: "Water does not flow under a lying stone"
Every inhabitant of the Soviet Union knows: it is easier to repair a failed plumbing yourself than to wait for a plumber from the housing and communal services, who is never in place. Here all the residents of the house from a simple worker to a fragile housewife themselves eliminate the resulting blockages. And despite things getting worse and worse, the plumbing phone continues to be unavailable – it has a lunchtime nap. And it is said about him that water does not flow under a lying stone.
Design and execution
The project “Laughter and Sin” was originally conceived as a serial almanac in which household troubles were to be ridiculed, which are so easily confirmed by ancient proverbs and sayings. However, the idea did not receive support. Nevertheless, Ivan Davydov continued to shoot cartoons for adults in collaboration with screenwriter Mikhail Lipskerov. In the “smoke of the horse” he mocked smoking, in the “new Aladdin” – bureaucrats, in the “Forty degrees on the areometer” – alcoholism, in “How to backfire” – rudeness. close
Soviet comedy-satire “Pena” united such actors as A. Papanov, L. Kuravlev, R. Bykov, L. Udovichenko, E. Sanaeva. The directorship of A. Stefanovich and more
Soviet comedy-satire “Pena” united such actors as A. Papanov, L. Kuravlev, R. Bykov, L. Udovichenko, E. Sanaeva. The directorship of A. Stefanovich and the script written by S. Mikhalkov make the film untrivial and uncharacteristic for Soviet cinema. The chamber play on which the film is made is aimed at ridiculing the adaptors.
Pavel Makhonin, director of a large enterprise (A. Papanov), is tormented by only one thing. In the profession he has reached great heights, but further advancement requires higher education. Makhonin has everything a Soviet man can dream of: a beautiful life without scarcity, imported things, a cozy atmosphere, connections in certain circles and his man Poludushkin (R. Bykov). The director can buy everything but the mind, which he critically needs to defend the dissertation. Mahonin’s favorite phrase is “Kings can do anything.” That’s why he started buying a degree.
The enemy among his own
Someone whispered to Paul the main thing and brought with the right people, including a certain Soloma (L. Kuravlev). Soloma is the courier of a modest corporation, whose dealers for a fee “within reason” can write a worthy dissertation. Everything goes to get the title, Mahonin happily rubs his hands and prepares a banquet. But, to the general surprise, a new person comes to the family. This is Victoria's fiancé, Mahonin's daughter. Young people have serious relationships, everything goes to the wedding, only acquaintance with the family of the bride is postponed. Victoria is going to guess the moment and show her betrothed at a banquet in honor of receiving her father's doctorate.
The groom is a promising young journalist Prosov, who conducts a special investigation. He attacked the trail of fraudsters who write “left” scientific works. At the banquet, Prosov talks about his project to Mahonin. Fright and confusion at the first moment are replaced by a phase of violent activity. He must at all costs prevent the publication of the material.
Features of the picture
• Surreal scenes are fantastic dreams of Mahonin, which reveal the essence of careerism. A comical dream about a visit to America, where an important official is received at the level of presidents. The tragedy of Mahonin conveys the dream of an autorodeo and falling into an abyss directly from his own office, pursuing his gangsters, outwardly similar to Soloma.
• The film combines uncharacteristic for the Soviet ironic comedy rapidity of events and rhythmic rock. Scenes change very quickly, transferred from the press club of the film festival to the deck of the ship, to an elite indoor restaurant or a country pool. The screen shows the gap between ordinary workers and the “cream” of society.
• It is noteworthy that in the scene of the film festival Alla Pugacheva played the role of an aspiring singer and sang a song, and the backing vocalist was Mikhail Boyarsky. close

The second cartoon tells about an apartment building that is only 10 years old and looks like 100. And how a little girl, by her example, made boys look at their home with completely different eyes. And most importantly, they will not paint the walls, but will love their home. The third cartoon about a boy-changer who changes everything: glasses for old stamps, and stamps for an elephant in the zoo, a dog for a cat, and a cat for a mouse, and a mouse changed for a bruise and a bump. And only two could not change for five. close
