Australian-born filmmaker George Miller offers a personal view of Australian films. He suggests that they can be regarded as visual music, public dreaming, mythology, and song-lines. In extrapolating the idea of movies as song-lines he examines feature films under the following categories: songs of the land; the bushman; the convicts; the bush-rangers; mates and larrikins; the digger; pommy bashing; the sheilas; gays; the wogs; blackfellas; and urban subversion. He then concludes that these films can be thought of as "Hymns that sing of Australia." close

Errol Morris’s Fast, Cheap & Out of Control interweaves the stories of four men, each driven to create eccentric worlds from their unique obsessions, all of which involve animals. There’s a lion tamer who shares his theories on the mental processes of wild animals; a topiary gardener who has devoted a lifetime to shaping bears and giraffes out of hedges and trees; a man fascinated with hairless mole rats; and an MIT scientist who has designed complex, autonomous robots that can crawl like bugs. close

Pablo Picasso is one of the most striking, controversial and stunning figures in world painting. During his more than half a century of activity, Picasso turned into an almost mythical personality, he is no longer perceived as a person, but as a unique phenomenon, as an unprecedented phenomenon. The works of the last fifteen years of the artist’s work are very diverse. One can, however, highlight the Spanish source of inspiration ("Portrait of an artist, in imitation of El Greco") and elements of tavromachy (perhaps because Picasso was a passionate fan of the popular bullfight in the south of France), expressed in drawings and watercolors in the spirit of Goya (1959-1968). The feeling of dissatisfaction with his own work is marked by a series of interpretations and variations on the themes of the famous paintings “Girls on the banks of the Seine”. According to Courbet"; "Algerian women. By Delacroix"; "The Meninees. According to Velasquez"; "Breakfast on the grass. By Manet. The film tells about the last years of the life of the great artist Pablo Picasso. close

Indie director Jim Jarmusch lenses a low-tech tribute to protean rocker Neil Young and his long-standing band, Crazy Horse. Victor Kossakovsky searched obsessively for inhabitants of St. Petersburg who were born on Wednesday 19 July 1961, his own birthday, in former Leningrad. Fifty-one women and fifty men fitted the profile. In the course of time a few of these 101 people had died, others had moved to another community or abroad. But in 1995 Kossakovsky managed to capture on film all seventy remaining residents, in the street, at work or simply at home. While doing so he spent time with doctors and patients, entertainers and businessmen, construction workers and homeless people. In his unorthodox style Kossakovsky has produced a beautiful profile of people in their thirties in St. Petersburg. close

Killing Time Productions are releasing an unofficial 95-minute documentary on DVD, titled "Metallimania" and filmed between 1994 to 1996, that humorously captured METALLICA and the outer limits of fan worship in a pre-Napster world. Like "Some Kind of Monster", "Metallimania" was also financed with METALLICA money for the band's own private amusement, a way to document what was then the longest tour of its career: nearly three years playing all over the world in support of its self-titled 1991 album. Cribbed from thousands of hours of camcorder footage taken at outdoor festivals, "Metallimania" freezes in amber for future generations the group in its last mullet-wearing "ALCOHOLICA" days and some of METALLICA's drunkest, scariest and most confused devotees. close
