A small but highly efficient killing machine - a hornet two inches long and with a wingspan up to three inches - lurks in the mountains of Japan. The voracious predator has a quarter-inch stinger that pumps out a dose of venom with an enzyme so strong it can dissolve human tissue. Just one of these hornets can kill 40 European honeybees a minute; a handful of the creatures can slaughter 30,000 European honeybees within hours, leaving a trail of severed insect heads and limbs. Someone who is stung by the hornet and doesn't receive proper treatment soon thereafter can die from the venom, which is powerful enough to disintegrate human flesh. About 40 people die each year after being stung by giant hornets, mainly as a result of an allergic reaction to the venom. close

A few years ago in Central Africa was discovered a completely unique species of gorillas - Mbeli Bai, characterized by a peaceful and friendly disposition. Unlike their aggressive cousins, these gorillas interact much more, gathering in groups to find food and fresh water. And more importantly, for communication. The behavior of animals amazed scientists so much that they had to rewrite textbooks. But what made other previously studied gorilla species so aggressive? The opinion of scientists on this issue is very categorical - it seems that the reason was close communication with a person. The new BBC film Gorillas will give us a different look at these amazing animals. close

The ancient Egyptians, obsessed with the cult of death, erected majestic monuments in the hope of securing eternal afterlife. They have survived thousands of years, but the vast majority of these monuments are still hidden under the sands of the desert. Their secrets and treasures, shrouded in the veil of centuries, await the discoverers. The National Geographic Society invites viewers to look under the sand columns, where the lost tombs of the Egyptian aristocracy that served the pharaohs are hidden. Together with Dr. Zahi Hawass, the chief Egyptian expert on antiquities, and the French archaeologist Dr. Alain Zivier, we will visit the places of eternal rest of the rich and the powerful in Saccra. Sensational discoveries of scientists help to draw a vivid portrait of an ancient civilization in the most exciting moments of its 3000-year history. close

Great white sharks are one of the largest and most dangerous predators of the oceans. Every summer, hundreds of these perfect killing machines sail into the Red Triangle, considered the most dangerous place in the world due to the sheer number of these bloodthirsty predators. In summer, the Red Triangle is home to the favorite treats of these ferocious killers - elephant seals, who arrived here during the mating season. In the area of the so-called Red Triangle, stretching for 200 km along the coast of California, there is the largest number of cases of white shark attacks on humans. The victims are mostly surfers. And all because sharks react to the silhouette of surfboards, which are very similar to the silhouettes of marine mammals - a favorite prey of white sharks. close
