The Sex Pistols, an English punk rock band, were formed in London in 1975. The band was the initiator of the punk movement in the UK. The work of the Sex Pistols is an inspiration for many subsequent punk bands and alternative rock musicians. Despite the fact that the first stage of the band’s career lasted only two and a half years and they released only four singles and one studio album “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols”, the Sex Pistols are considered one of the most influential bands in the history of modern music.
Initially, the band includes vocalist Johnny Rotten, bassist Glen Matlock, guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook. In 1977, Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious. Under the leadership of impresario Malcolm McLaren, the band gained fame throughout the UK. Concerts often serve as a source of conflict between organizers and authorities, and appearances of musicians in public often end in hooligan antics and riots. The controversial 1977 single "God Save the Queen" was directed against British conformism and respect for the crown. In the song, the Queen connects with the fascist regime and declares that England has no future. The purpose of the musicians was to express sympathy for the working class and resentment towards the monarchy.
In January 1978, after a stormy tour of the United States, Rotten left the band and announced its breakup. Over the next few months, the three remaining band members record a song for the McLaren film.
The Big Rock 'n' Roll Cheat The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle is about the Sex Pistols. He died of a heroin overdose in February 1979. In 1996, Rotten, Jones, and Matlock teamed up to host the Filthy Lucre Tour. Since 2002, musicians have occasionally performed together. In February 2006, the names of the band's founders and Vicens were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, the musicians themselves ignored the ceremony.
