In the hope of saving someone, Hiko kills the bandits, but does not have time and finds only one young boy alive. Hiko leaves, leaving the child with a message to go to the nearest village and there to ask the peasants for shelter. A few days later, Hiko returns to make sure the boy did as he was told. However, to his surprise, he finds a child nearby, where he burys the dead: former slaves, bandits and even slavers. Seeing the potential in this child, Hiko adopts him, giving the boy the name Kenshin, which means "heart of the sword."
