Hell's Kitchen Austrian thriller, which begins with a very simple plot, not foreshadowing any trouble. All that debt collector undertakes to confiscate a yellow Volkswagen “beetle”, going in search of the owner, but since the main character is a former police officer – well, he can not help but take up the investigation of mysterious events.
Further, as expected, a powerful detective line with intrigues and murders, the exposure of the villain and additional details of what is happening, the convergence of lines of investigation and search for the owner of the car, nothing beyond the original or frank does not happen. But his genre corresponds to good traditions.
Despite the dynamics, the film dramatically loses its expressiveness. Bright artistic techniques, as well as beautiful shooting, are absent and do not fill the video with something valuable, original and pleasant for the eyes. Unless, of course, we are talking directly about the operator’s work, and not about the content. The content matches the title. There will be a lot of meat, but not in the understanding of the massacre to the right and left, but in total: pig carcasses, cut chickens, severed human fingers, pools of blood on the floor and suspended for cutting the body, and again not always belonging to the species of Homo sapiens, as well as bone crushing and other terrible moments, from which some may want to close their eyes. But what would serve as a major component of, say, Saws is not the primary goal in Butcher, and therefore, despite the active demonstration of such violence in plain sight, there is definitely no emphasis on cruelty and savoring bloody details. Everything comes out too ordinary and indifferent to the viewer. If in the above-mentioned “Saw” we are really forced to worry, albeit not for all, but for a very many test subjects, sometimes even almost feeling in his place and thinking about the details of the choice in such a situation, then here without bias you follow dubious characters, each of which is not pleasant in its own way.
Perhaps it is on this “non-acceptance” that the film is built. The viewer is not so much going to scare or keep in suspense, but just want to make turn his nose in disgust. In addition, if in thrillers of this kind, attention to detail helps the viewer himself become a detective, solving the mystery. Here the denouement is presented with such irony and absurdity that, apart from disgust, one can only laugh - which only people will not invent. And if “Saw” is essentially an entertaining horror thriller, but at the same time makes you often think about very smart things and pierces philosophy, then “Butcher” though pure art house, but rather dull and even stupid. The only decent idea in the whole film is that the person has to be kind of “rubber” in his essence and state of mind, because if the rubber is dropped, it will not break, but bounce back. Agree, there is something in this and you can develop this idea in a very interesting philosophical conversation. Yes, it is controversial, of course, while the banal “value your life” sounds really elementary, but simple things are usually easier to reveal and accessibility for the viewer is always on the face, here as it is not trying to see the “rubber people” it turns out with difficulty and from time to time.
And perception will depend on only one factor - whether the plot itself will be interested. That is, if you are interested in the investigation and the whole situation that has developed in the film, then of course - you will follow how events develop and where this will lead. If, by the end of the fortieth minute, your fingers reach to turn off the film, you can safely turn it off, despite the fact that just minutes from the forty-fifth and the best pace will begin.
If the results of the viewing to draw any conclusions, then in many respects the film will be weak. By the level of suspense bend, it is extremely controversial, as well as in terms of the intrigue of the plot plot, it clearly does not get the visual content, although I would not say that there is absolutely nothing to look at here. If you touch the characters, they came out rather dull and little noticeable, rarely for whom you can really worry and few people cause obvious sympathy. There is also a lack of alarming sound design to whip up the atmosphere in the strongest scenes, keeping the screen tense.
The theme of cannibalism and all this hellish cuisine is not disclosed, because the film at the box office and was renamed as a result in “The Butcher”, just as the main idea, infringed on in the dialogues, is not disclosed. Not saving this German-speaking film even the fact that in a bunch of scenes speak free Russian without an accent. The element is pleasant for patriots, but does not serve here as some plot important moment, because in principle, any other tourist could be in the place of a Russian, and the theme of the Russian soul and character in this character is completely undisclosed, except for love for the Russian mat, of course.
And, probably, such a film is still worth watching, at least for an illustrative example of how having a good synopsis can ruin the idea with a weak production. And even if the film still likes, I doubt that it will occupy a high position in the top leaders, since it does not particularly pretend to be genius or originality. This is just an average, able to win both negative reviews for their weaknesses, and still find their viewer. But the fact that this is a nasty movie, hardly anyone doubts after watching, regardless of their attitude to what they saw.
